Glad it's keeping you warm. After paying for the gas because you conned me into bringing it to you, then, having me over a barrel, raking me across the coals on the price, my date and I were able to afford to share a breakfast sandwich.

I will try to be there to buy it back, before next winter.

My largest regret of that trip is not buying Matthew's Cherry Chorus.

Word was you were in town visiting you daughter any way. All the cash was gravy. And you stole a license plate off our parking lot while there too.

I thinks @Shaun K ended up with those Chorus.

  2. I hope dtr20's suggestion works for you.

I know you want to stay original, but if it ends up you cant, several here have used Mojotone cane fabric. Google them, search "cane". They have two that are close. I used the tighter weave but the looser "English" weave should word as well. They dont have that second layer that you see up close on the original but from a couple feet away, look very close

I am not sure where your numbers are coming from, but I have no interest in debating them.

However maybe I can give some perspective.

In my youth, "car guys" when asked about their car (their pride and joy) would respond with the simple phrase "built not bought".  It was said with pride. That sort of pride and passion still carries weight with a segment of the population.

I know I am a dinosaur, but until one can embrace notion of "built not bought", you will not understand why some head down that path.

    Just my 2 cents,

    -Tom

PS: I hope that Alfredo and others like him will pursue that passion.

    Very well put Tom!

    And your diplomacy is admirable.

  4. Haters are going to hate. Chevy hates Fords, Fords hate Mopars........

Most that dont like LS have never heard LS. Some never heard them done right either.

I have never had anyone listen to my LS or Belles and not agree that they were the best speakers they ever heard.

I've heard better but only cuz I've heard Khorns

I have a pair of CT-125s that I’d be willing to trade for a pair of K77s.

Fairly lateral move in my opinion. Not worth the effort or shipping.

I much prefer the 120 (in my little mind). That would make it worthwhile to me.

Alright, I’ve been screwing around some more. Not completely satisfied with my modifications (although they helped) I decided to build my own AL-3 crossovers to get back to the original intent of these speakers. Unfortunately, I threw the original AL crossovers in the trash without first listening to them. I was going to just buy a pair of AL-3, but they are over $700 now! I successfully built a pair of AL-3s (omitting tweeter protection) and I’m pleased with how they turned out. After all that wiring and soldering, I have blisters on my fingers! Now I know why they cost what they do.

I returned my La Scalas to bone stock; K-33E, K-55M, and K-77M. For the past week I’ve been critically listening to this configuration with the AL-3 crossovers. After all, this is what I’m going to stick with. Something in the AL-3 got rid of that annoying nasal/boxy/stuffy sound in the bass. Is it the 4mH inductor or the two paralleled 68uF capacitors that are responsible? Aside from that, I just prefer the sound of the good ol K-77 over the CT-120. They just have that top end sparkle. I’m feeling satisfied and my itches are being scratched in the right places.

So, here I am having gone full circle with upgrades and changes. Back to original, and that’s what is best for me with the La Scala. All of the upgrade parts now live in my Clonewalls (1526C cast frame, A55G, and CT-120). Oddly enough, my Clonewalls sound about the same as they did before, except for the tweeters. I want to put some K-77s back in there. The top end sparkle is now subdued. Anyone have a good pair of K-77s for sale?

I'll trade you a pair of K77 for your CT-120's

  7. I am by no means an expert or historian, but this is what I have always thought to be the case. The AK, along with the AL and AB crossovers were introduced to be used with the K55M. Timing may have differed due to inventory or contracts or first mass production of the 55M and a number of each style would have come out with the remaining 55V. Much like the many Heresy 1.5's out there that have the rear mounted drivers but have the E2 xover and the K53 driver as the transition was a process.

None of this is matter of fact, just the way the story has been told to me. Makes sense but unconfirmed. Maybe try the "Ask the Historian" section of this forum.

  8. I built a complete HIP following mostly the Super Heresy recipe. Not much room to improvise. This is with the CT120 tweeter and the Delta 12LFA woofer. I could not change the sizing due to using a set of HIP aluminum trim that a nice member here gave me.  Did you resize your cutout for the woofer as well. I don't think the woofer Claude recommends is the same size as the K22 slightly larger cutout and overall diameter. I know the Delta is larger

  9. I gave my daughter one of those when we refinished her kitchen. It is a very nice sounding unit. Plenty of bass if positioned properly. Just bought another one for her uncle who was amazed at hers. There definitely is some software (firmware) tweaking going on with the sound. It is compensating for the physics of this small unit. Sounds like yours is overcompensating a bit. Hopefully it is just a reset, give that a try. Both units we are using seem to be working as designed. Good luck.

My LS sound nothing related to “boxy, nasal”,etc. etc. Might it have to do with excessive volume where the room is overloaded or under damped?
My Jubes and LS are positioned about 18 feet apart on centers, in a room about 26 feet back to front, I sit roughly in the middle of the room. Jubes are angled to cross at the back of the room and when the LS are brought in they are set directly in front of the Jubes, exact same crossing angle. Imaging is beyond reproach, no one would be able to say there is not a third speaker in the center (ghost speaker). Maybe I’m lucky with my setup or my hearing not as critical as others but the LS are every bit as enjoyable as Jubilees. The same presentation no, as enjoyable, yes.

My LS sound wonderful too. Not sure who is doing what wrong and/or  what I am accidentally doing right, but they sound great. Both sets and both sets of Belles. Enjoyable is the right word Riche!!!

  11. I don't really think anyone is bashing the Klipsch engineers. They have made many x overs and changes to improve them as well. Some have to be better than others. Not all can be homeruns. Some changes are made due to availability of materials or a change in another component or weakness discovered in a current component. They are also restricted to cost/ROI of materials and need to take production capabilities etc into account. The engineer has to decide when the law a diminishing returns comes into play. If you are building or tweaking one or three sets, costs are one thing. If you plan to make hundreds and hundreds, small costs add up. Tweaking or tinkering is part of this hobby. Good, bad or indifferent, it is what it is. Love my Klipsch, the ones I've tweaked and ones I haven't.

In regards to the "half -baked" opinions....this one is a real classic.

Yeah...we should all go out & buy 2 x 25 watt amps to run some home made cabs with tiny drivers to achieve "real' bass.

Throw me all the graphs you want, but if you think that's going to gel with a set of La Scala's, then you need new ears.

You would be surprised how well they gel (with Belles in my case) BUT not for every situation or room. Mine are in a small (12 x20) living room with no place to put another speakers, so underneath it goes. I use 200 watts not 25 and the two keep up just fine with the mains. just the little boost from 80hz down to around 25hz.

Like you (if I guess right) I just enjoy building things and experimenting.  I have built about a dozen of these for several people. Some were knocked out, some were underwhelmed. I have other set ups with another set of Belles and two sets of LSi. I use different subs for each, just for the fun of the game. All sound good to me and were worth the effort put forth which was fun so actually no effort.

    Enjoy the hobby
