Agreed. Average consumers are pretty much only impressed by room shaking bass. Since I took delivery of CWIVs almost a month ago: I've not watched a single movie, I've only listened to music and I've had my cheap Klipsch subs disconnected.

Though I am sourcing a sub woofer amp to power two JL Audio 13w6 subs in a sealed enclosure I used to have in a truck. I've found the 1000 watt Dayton and am considering it strongly. Any other options that won't break the bank?

The Dayton amp is nice but be careful not to overload. Don't let the load drop below 4 ohms. Been there fried that.

I still have one and like it very much but..... With those speakers you would have to run the voice coils in series or the drivers in series to avoid problems. It is very hard to get the smoke back into the wires.

The Crown XLS amps work well and handle the lower loads better. I have one of them that I abuse.

Interesting speakers in the corners bluesboy!  Looks like an Altec horn?

That horn and the tweeter do look familiar! Come to think of it, so does his avatar!

    Hmmmm

    Good looking system bluesboy!

A week from today I’m having HoLEP surgery at U of M Hospital to address BPH.  Apparently, my prostate is the size of a small Buick.  Hopefully, after the “non-invasive” surgery, the urge to use each restroom I pass will pass.

good luck Neil, hope it all turns out well.

those are beautiful! I am a big fan of the trim and with the natural color of the wood (+/-) it looks perfect.

    Enjoy them.

  6. The HIP is slightly taller than a normal Heresy is my experience. When I got the trim, I test fit it on my existing Heresy and the trim was too long on the height, correct on the depth. This came in handy when I built the boxes because there is barely enough room for the drivers after you deduct the 1" tall port and the additional board for the top of the port. I made it in but not much to spare. If I need to remove the tweeter, I have to take the top handle off first as it extends down just to the rear of the tweeter.

I have used a version of @ClaudeJ1 super Heresy but that puts the port in the rear of the cabinet which is not ideal for PA use. Also had to switch woofers for best results.

The slant monitor's shape makes the internal volume much less than the standard H1 or HIP

  7. I would suggest rehabbing them. I only inherited a set of alum trim for one HIP and built from there. You have (almost) all the parts.

Polish the trim and put a fresh coat of duratex on the cabinet. (you can re anondize the trim but then you're getting expensive.)

The smaller cabinet of the slant monitor makes good deep bass a little tough but someone might have an idea how to port. The HIP has a slot port at the bottom but the size of the cabinet comes into play. Post more pics. If the handle is the same as what I had, you can find the exact (minus the logo) handle @  PE! Have at it! Looks like fun to me.

Here's what you do. Using a regular combination wrench and your torque wrench, teach yourself how much pressure to apply to the wrench for proper tightening. So torque a bolt to 110 lbs and finish it off to what you think is needed with the combination wrench to 115 lbs. Check it with the torque wrench. You'll be surprised at how close you can get with the feel. Install and torque all bolts possible this way. Then finish off those few bolts with just the combination wrench and your newly calibrated brain. Job done.

Remember, the most amazing tool you will ever own is you.

Remember to recalibrate yourself every five years. What feels like 100lbs of torque at 30 is about 35lbs at 60.

Not my personal experience, just observing my friends getting old.

  9. This subject has been kicked around many times. Bottom line is they are both great speakers and are head and shoulders above most speakers out there. I for some reason (don't know why so dont ask) have two pair of Belles and two pair of LaScalas. I would be hard pressed to notice any difference between the two design. Maybe on a chart or graph, it can be detected, but not by my ears. Once they started making the LS pretty (LSII>) there really was no need for the Belle.

You cant go wrong with either. Buy the one the appeals to you visually, cuz sonically, you probably cant tell them apart.

    Just my two cents.

I typed that slow because I know you can't read very fast.

    Wow, even YOU knew that!!!

    Now I'm embarrassed.

Does that mean I don't need a subwoofer anymore???

(trick question, Carl always needs a subwoofer or two or three....)

You're not the first one to tell me that.  I might make it my retirement hustle in a couple years.

I'll go in halvsies with you!!

I will need a hobby someday soon and I have way too many speakers to build more and actually keep 'em!!

Would be a good side hustle.

Sometimes I think we really need a WOW! emoji.  Four 18" subs?  I'd say "WOW!" if I saw and heard that van.

pretty sure he used to drive down my street at 2 am on a regular basis.

  13. My favorite cars were both 72 Cutlass. The first car I ever owned by myself (youngest of five kids, bought a couple with siblings) was a green hard top. Great car and had a lot of fun in it (a LOT). Got me through the college years and into quasi adulthood. BC (before children) I added a second one, convertible this time. Now that was a cool car. It was a poor man's Cutlass not the fancy  442, but it ran very strong (350). Sold the hard top when our second child was on the way cuz it wasn't car seat friendly. The convertible stuck around until number 4 child showed up and could not longer afford/justify an extra car "just for fun".

All practical vehicles since then, even went through a mini-van phase (the dark years).

Did have a suburban for many many years that I grew attached to. Sold it with 330,000 miles on it. Still ran great, just little things breaking too often. cried a little when I let her go.

Last night my wife told me happy mudders day, she was not really kidding.

Saw her posting yesterday. She hasn't been on much lately.

I have a feeling you weren't the only forum member she referred to as a mudder!

    Tell her Happy Mothers Day!!

  15. Off topic: @The Green Hornet, what is the story behind your avatar. I actually had a bottle opener that had that same four eyed dude.

    Never figured out the meaning.

On topic: I have small tapped horns that seem to play well with my Belles. Adds to the bottom end nicely.

I have only heard one true horn sub and that was a THTLP that belongs to @codewritinfool It was very nice. Filled in the lower octaves with authority and never drew unwanted attention to itself like many DR subs that I have heard tend to do.
