  1. I use an SVS 20-39PCi and could not be happier. The blend with the Heresy is very nice - I manage the LF stuff at 80hz. I imagine the heresy going to 60hz makes a very good roll off at the managed frequency. It made the Heresy much more complete. Listening to 'Luce' right now and am reminded of how well the sub fills the speaker out...
  2. I vote for Heresy all around - I too piddled with a similar type of mishmash and gradually came around to 2 pair of Heresy and a modified Heresy center. For lack of a better term the Heresy (and subsequentlly all heritage) and reference stuff sound 'larger'. You can be misled by specifications that show greater frequency response (both higher and lower) but sound less full - especially as your room gets larger. However, If you want to go with a match for your surrounds, you'll find takers here for the Heresy.
  3. Mr. Tate - this board is nothing like some of the others. If you want to get your chops busted try some of the high efficiency, DIY and full range speaker forums. As to snobbish - Yeah, I am probably guilty. But I try very hard to only be condescending, not hostile As to fighting back - ever notice that in Basketball, football and Hockey that the one who throws the first punch is rarely punished as hard as the one that retaliates (is there a point here? Not sure..a toxic youth makes consistent thoughts hard to maintain past two paragraphs) I already own the HK unit in the basement and it is a very nice SS amp. As to a shoot out with the tubes (doesn't a tube make a delightful sound when shot?) I would like to be in the room. Competition between two 'goods' is always entertaining.
  4. Yep - just a/b compare the Bose to most anything in the same price range and (especially if you are a horn fan) you should walk away wondering what these guys are selling. The 'enveloping' sound they provide is only valuable if you choose to listen only to Bose. Kudos to their great marketing, otherwise I suggest spending your money more wisely...
  5. Denon customer service is a lot like their manuals - it requires effort on your part to get real information/response from either one (at least that has been my experience). I am a Denon fan, but i accept their poor customer service when I make my decisions. It does make one consider non-authorized sources in a different light.
  6. I have the same as MKl and vouch for the SVS meshed with a modded Heresy center, Heresy front and heresy side. All this is depending on your room size, but I have also auditioned the two HSU box subs in this room and they blend well (for music I preferred the VTF 3). The RSW 15 was here for a while and it was dandy for music and a good blend. Those are the ones that made my cut...
  7. I have experimented with center placement and found that, for my ear, if you can be within 12 inches, either way, as the same plane as the main front speakers then you will have a pretty seamless integration. Somewhere around there I always noticed that the sound became more 'localized' for the three front speakers. This was most obvious with the speaker that produces the most mid range (where your center is very active during dialog). Trying to remain on the same plane will definitely be better
  8. Yeah Mike - You are right. I should restrict my slams to private messages. I reread the post - I started off in the correct way, but I wandered into having too much fun on something that was too far off topic. I really did keep most of my comments to myself, but I also made sure some of my words encouraged the continuation. I definitely went too far in the subsequent post - We'll let it run out without me. It really was fun in spurts. Most of all I am sorry about my comments on the special Olympic picture. I have been around long enough, and help with so many disadvantaged, that I should have known that folks would (rightly so) find the subject offensive. Cheers all...
  9. Oops - as to selling, alot of these are listed on EBay. Folks may well go higher there for poorer quality cabinets, etc. Good luck
  10. Others may know if there is a reason to collect this speaker. Otherwise, if all is in good woking order (check the surround of the woofer) and the cabinets are reasonable you can expect $250 - $400 for the pair. The higher end is based on good grilles and nameplates. The old PWK badge will up the price a bit for some folks. Poor cabinet condition keeps the price on the low end. Doesn't seem like enough numbers in the Serial number, but the 'L' indicates a 1973 build date. Hope this helps.
  11. I found the press release. Further down was his bio. Some of the more applicable parts were: "Mr. PeeWee is a graduate of the Reverend Billy Saul Hargis school of evangelical Physics and Engineering. After attending school for six years in the Bahamas and obtaining his associate degree in applied marketing, he joined the 'World Crusade for Peace through Electronics' to, in his words, give a little bit back to society. Shortly after organizing the biggest tour stop for the crusade (a large gathering in a field outside of Albany, New York) a lengthy conversation with the New York State Police and with advice from a highly placed Federal judge, Mr. PeeWee decided that California was the place to persue his career." And further down it states: "Mr. PeeWee's dream of selling pork products in Isreal was put on hold to work in the Reverend Billy Saul Hargis Discount House of Worship where he was reunited with his college mentor. During this time Mr. PeeWee was introduced to quality audio products through a relationship with a mysterious Mr. Bose. Mr. PeeWee continues to rely on Mr. Bose and together they have developed a layman's definition of extrapolated physics that, when proven, provides explanation for the creation of the universe." And in his list of accomplishments: "Mr. PeeWee developed a translator computer program for Anna Nicole Smith" "Co-arthured the 'Loudspeakers for Dummies' 300 volume work" No wonder - I was locked in a loosing battle with such a brilliant mind. I have learned my lesson....
  12. James - Trouble with reading? (You clearly have trouble with grammer) I have auditioned respective manufacturer's units (and a few others in the same price range as the VTF 3). And you have heard what? (I know you have heard other's opinions, but how about subwoofers?) Say hello to Bob for me....
  13. Trey - Thanks (publically) for helping me out in my most recent project. You are one of the 'good guys' that we all search out. By being so , you leave a wonderfully positive image of Klipsch that is so much like the Klipsch of old - that passionate and helpful company that helped me learn to appreciate recorded music. I am sure R&D is glad to have you back. I grew up in Hamburg (everyone else is saying "Germany?") - just down the road in Arkansas - so wave to everyone you see, it may be one of my relatives...
  14. Russ - Great attachment. Still giggling... James - Just to prove Russ's point (I may be retarded, but this is too much fun) and to do something I have rarely done - rejoin a conversation that I had committed formally to not do, here is my rebuttal to your comments on my message. Please read my response carefully. I did not comment on the respective performances of the VTF 2 vs. the VTF 3. Regardless of your over the top comparison (2 VTF 2 vs 1 VTF 3 - just what is the point you are trying to make?), I want to make it clear (I thought it was before) that the VTF 3 is a better performer than the VTF 2 for several reasons that you probably can't fathom. My point was (and is) that the VTF 2, in its price range, is (in my listening experience) right there with the best and exceeds many higher priced, similarly speced speakers. That is an outstanding bargain, and if the specs and sounds meet your needs it should be a standard for comparison. In the price range and respective specifications (and the sound that I hear) for a VTF 3 the same does not hold true. At the VTF 3 price range there are many more comparable options - and again in my humble opinion (geez - it is tiresome that I have to repeat this) it is not the comparative value of several others - specifically several SVS units (fanboy - darn straight, I spent quite some time developing my experience based biases and I'll not likely let your evangelistic physics change what I have heard) Wow - Russ, just so you know, the spirit of the competing is the reward for our retardation. I am really out of here this time...
  15. James Pheele - I know someone that has had both a Miata and A BMW Z3 (with inline six) that claims the Miata is the better car. That simply makes it one person's opinion. I have had both cars. My Z3 is by far a better car for how I like to drive. This is also one person's opinion, albiet not second hand. The point - Neither 'opinion' is justification for a 'ridiculous' bargain. Further, it will not make these observations anything other than opinion just because it is repeated several times. As to the original question - IMHO HSU makes fine subs. I stand by the 'opinion' that the VFT 2 is an outstanding bargain. As to VFT 3 - I think there are better options. Well, now that felt OK - I really want to say more. The problem is how this moves so far away from subject - I caution all to listen to observations that ring true and don't get mired in the ramblings that tend to happen on this subject. TTFN- my last comment in this thread..
  16. tgw - It always seems to start - There is a repetitive HSU gets no respect and is the best - those SVS, Velodyne, etc. folks are simple minded folks bent on marketing and don't come close to HSU specs, blah, blah, blah. A few words of wisdom - in this faceless world of internet advice, find folks that you can validate from your own experience are saying 'true' stuff. You will also find that these same folks have a very specific 'let your ears be your guide' tone in their messages and will offer very beneficial analysis - they also make their biases known so you can weight that in looking to the value of their comments. Enough preaching. As to HSU - yes, they make a darn good product and their price/value ratio is outstanding. Further, they tend to deliver on their promises and spend time to make sure you are satisfied with your purchase - that is outstanding when compared to many other retail folks. I have heard both the VTF 2 and 3. FWIW and IMHO - the VTF 2 is one of the best values around and they both are very fine performers. I have heard some glowing remarks (from sources I trust) on the tubes and when I was in the market for a sub, the good Dr. Hsu suggested a tube as a better alternative based on what I was looking to get from the loudspeaker. IMO the competition at this price point is SVS, HSU and DIY (making your own loudspeaker). You can really start splitting hairs, but either SVS or HSU will offer outstanding value, very good sound and an extraordinary focus on the customer. As for me - I went SVS 20-39pci and have not looked back with any regret. My price point was well under the VTF 3 and is an admirable performer that I prefer to the 3 (this is my ears only remember). I understand that I would be very much enamored if I had a chance to audition the HSU TN series as a comparative. Step up in price range and you will get inundated with good subs - Velodyne, Klipsch, HSU, SVS, etc. - that will really make your head spin...
  17. Very nicely done - give us audition notes once you fire it up... I may have missed it - what Xover are you using?
  18. For my preference - 65 - 70 db average measured at my listening position (13 feet) is very loud and clear. Any above that and I need to be sure the house is empty and it is for my enjoyment only...
  19. Wonderful and attractive. You get the prize for most models of hertiage used in one place! I too am interested in the center being that much higher than the fronts and wonder what your impression is to date. Great work - thanks for sharing.
  20. Lynnm Very, very funny stuff. Read it twice just to laugh at different spots. I slept poorly last night (cold, congestion, maybe the flu, etc.) and your post helped me get over the 'woe is me' feeling this morning. My family thanks you (including the dog who can get the brunt of my mood). Keep up the good work Dr. Lynn
  21. Great detailed response - I had almost forgotten this thread until you renewed it. I can agree with a lot of your opinion (and if you look back near the first of the thread said some similar things). My apologies for not explicitly describing the difference between the Maggie Planars and the ML electrostats and for calling the Maggies stats. However, my point would have been better made if I noted the similarity in their sound. And lastly, talking out my *** is a particularly difficult thing to do and I am darned proud of it...
  22. Nice - I know the feeling of getting the center working much better. Great work.
  23. Nice - I know the feeling of getting the center working much better. Great work.
  24. Two items - 1. Yes to the midrange matching. So very much of the center dialog is in the midrange that not matching timbre there it is most clearly noticable. To use as a music fill I think you need to have the tweeter as well - this is the strength of the speakers you are matching. 2. You shielding concept seems to be right, but I was only taking cursory looks at that since I built a box for an RPTV and did not need it. The DIY section of Home Theater Forum has some really good folks looking in that may answer your question on shielding. The only 'gotcha' there is resonance and that should be a minor thing to resolve. If you want to weed through some interesting folks to get your answer the full range driver forum and madisounds discussion forum are also useful. If you have the space, I suggest angling the Heresy toward your primary listening position.
  25. 60 is probably more accurate than my 50hz comment. I think that 50hz would be in the -6db range and my issue with my center is that I get -6db right around 70hz. This probably better states my issue than the original post.
