  1. How good is the cartridge that comes with the MMF-5, is it professionally mounted at the factory and ready for playing?
  2. I would ask what he wants for it first, you might get lucky and he says 50 bucks. Heck he's your uncle Id say no more than $150 even thow its probably worth 250. Good luck its a peach and I am sure you will end up with it.
  3. I was wondering what pioneer you would come up with at your uncles. Looks like a nice find a pioneer sx-980 with power meters and all. Clean the controlls with caig deoxit believe me the pioneer needs it , it will take that scratcheness out of that volume controll. If its mint contition its worth at least 200 bucks. Also just check out ebay for the other equipment your uncle has that will tell you what it is worth.Enjoy your pioneer sx-980 nothing like vintage equipment.
  4. Very sad, Lynnm your wisdom will be missed on this forum but you will never be forgoten. RIP LYNNM.
  5. Picked this HK-430 up on ebay for 30 bucks and $20 too ship. Took about two hours too clean up and deoxit all controlls but it sounds great. Will post a picture.
  6. Man the scott 299 looks great as does the eico hf-81. But man that fisher 400c preamp is a real keeper. Forum members that need equipment ought too jump on these pieces.
  7. If it was me and the pioneer was a Sx-780 or sx-980 I would clean all the controlls with Caig deoxit and fire it up, those receivers are worth anywere between 100 and 200 bucks, maby it will work and maybe not who knows. Now if the receiver is an SX-1280 OR SX-1980 I would send this too a good teck like ECHOWARS that hangs out at audiokarma.org he is the Craig of vintage solid state receivers. The sx-1280 and 1980 are worth too much money too take a chance on and from what I hear parts are hard too get or imposible to get so I wouldnt take a chance on it, without a teck looking at it. my 2 cent worth
  8. Glad you are still around Dave I was wondering why you quit posting. Glad everything is well and man you have some more equipment and speakers since I was at your house sometime ago. DAVE what ever happened too SHOEMAKER that youngster that had the scott 299d and posted a lot, he dissapered about the same time you did.
  9. Go get that old vintage pioneer hopfully its a SX-780, SX-980, or if you are one lucky dude its a SX-1280 or the big dady of them all a SX-1980 worth about 1000 bucks. Also might be the SX-750, SX-950, OR 1250, still nice pioneer receivers. Pioneer, sansui, harmon kardon, all made nice receivers back in the mid too late 70s well worth your trip too get it in fact I would run and get it.
  10. Thanks guys, looks like carbon film or any kind will work. Craig with my electrical skills your job rebulding tube amps is 100% safe, LOL. I have about a million more questions about trying to rebuild this poor fisher X-100 of mine this winter, just cant stand too let it set there and go too waste. Anybody ever order anything from this electronic parts supplier this is were I might get some carbon film resistors seems like the prices on there stuff is cheep. http://www.futurlec.com/
  11. I see that resistors are made out of different materials carbon film, metel film, ect. Which is better for use in rebuilding a tube intergrated amplifier like a scott or fisher? What type of resistors did the scott and fishers come with from the factory?
  12. Guy Landau wrote: Remove the GZ-34 rectifier, replace the fuse and turn the amp on.rplace the GZ34 is the rectifier the big tube on your amp. I would hold off and get ahold of Craig, I bet something went bad in your amp could be a tube maybe, something simple I hope. Hopfully an easy fix.
  13. Looks like Bush Stadium will have another game or two played in it before it gets tore down. That home run that Pujols hit had too be one of the longest in playoff history, what a hit. I live about an hour drive from St Louis and have always been a cards fan so GO CARDS !!!!!!!!!!
  14. Craig if I may ask what brand of capacitors are those green and pinkish collered ones you used on this rebuild, I think they look awsome?
  15. Here is a set of cartridge wires I found in my stash of stereo stuff. Red, white, blue and green, right at an inch and a quarter long. Dont ask me what they came off of I havent a clue. They are yours for the asking just make sure they are long enough.
  16. try again last file too big I think.
  17. I got a tube tester from my dad he used it back in the 60s and 70s when he worked on tube radios and such as a hobby. It is a Accurate Instrument Model 151 tube tester, seems too work fine. Not one of the best tube testers made I am sure but will do me fine and the price was right he gave it too me. I found over a thousand used tubes at the weekly auction, its a place in town that has one every week on wendsdays. Mostly a bunch of tv tubes it looks too me, but I only got 20 bucks in the whole bunch. Found some 5u4, 6bl8, 6au8, 12ax7, 12au7, 6bq5, there is so many number tubes its imposible to list them. Dont really thing there is many worth a lot of money but I think I got my 20 bucks worth. Man have I culled a lot of tubes that had shorts in them or tested week, even ones that looked in great shape by the eye.I will try and post a picture of the tube tester.
  18. A Scott 299B is an easy find usually 1 or 2 a week on ebay. Can be bought for around the 200 to 350 bucks depending on how mint the unit is. Of couse these will be units that may work but of course need too be rebuilt for safty issues and too get the best sound out of them. Figure you will be out close too 600 bucks after a rebuild give or take a few bucks.
  19. I have magically fixed a few electronic things also by unplugging them and plugging them back in a tv for one and my microwave. Dang platter on the microwave wouldent turn at all unplugged it and plugged it back in and it works fine. Tv wouldnt come on same thing unpugged it and plugged it back in and on it came. THANK GOD it was a cheep fix . LOL
  20. Wow, you are one lucky dude, what a find a set of k-horns and a scott 299b too boot. Looks like you might have a sansui 9090db in that audio rack of your also, cant tell for sure from the picture thow. The hk-430 does sound nice with the k-horns its a little bass monster actually outdoes my scott 299a in the bass department, but falls way short in the midrange and treble department campared too the Scott 299a. Get that 299B rebuilt and you will love those k-horns even more. Enjoy your k-horns glad they went too a good home.
  21. Jpm, do your k-horns have the factory seals on the back of the tail board where the bass been goes against the wall and seals it into the corner? If not you will gain some bass by sealing them into the corners and will make a difference in the bass department.
  22. Hopefully he has a nice vintage marantz receiver, get the model number of the receiver and check ebay priceing they usually bring good bucks and are also nice looking and sounding receivers. The marantz 6300 turntable is one of the better marantz turntables. Let us know what marantz model stuff he has and for 200 bucks it could be a steal.
  23. I have about 20 picture disc, I never play them thow, I really think they are special and are really for mostly looking at. I like the meatloaf bat out of hell picture disc really neet. I also have a mollyhatchet unopened that only radio stations got a copy off. I need a paul stanley picture disc yet and I will have all 4 kiss solo picture disc. I really like picture disc and a lot of people that see my colection have never seen a picture disc before and are amazed by them. Plenty of them on ebay and some of them dont cost an arm and a leg.
