I must agree with Marius. From reading his post we do find out what kind of "person is Mr. George Wright." but we also find out what kind of person is Marius. This thread reminds me of listening to Dr. Laura on the radio (which I now avoid at all costs). One can't help but wonder why the callers didn't know that she would ream them a new bodily orifice. Did they never listen to her show; did Marius never read this forum? What could he have expected the reaction to be?

In 2003, I purchased a used Chevy Astro cargo van through eBay and flew to Dallas to take delivery. On the way home to Michigan the following occurred: · Locked myself in the back in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Texas; had to jimmy bulkhead door; · Drove around Hope looking for signs of Klipsch and the original tin-roofed telephone company/factory, without luck (testosterone prevented asking directions); · Encountered terrible ice storm in Kentucky; · Starter motor spontaneously engaged at 45 mph and burned up while driving in ice storm; · Got towed to Chevy dealer in E-Town shortly before closing time; · Service department called local parts store for starter motor and mechanic agreed to stay late to replace the starter; · Set out again at 9PM still in ice storm, but decided to turn around and spend the night in E-Town; · Starter motor again spontaneously engaged at 40 mph and burned up; · Again was towed to Chevy dealer in E-Town, this time at opening time; · Service dept. ordered another starter motor, and this time let the van run in the shop until the starter again spontaneously engaged, but was shut off before destroying itself; · The problem was traced to a defective neutral safety switch; · Chevy dealer replaced the switch, did not charge me for the 2nd starter motor and reimbursed me for 2nd tow; · Upon my return to Michigan, I called the Domino's Pizza store in E-Town and had them deliver pizza to the Chevy dealers service department; · Shortly thereafter the van was totaled by a woman talking on her cell phone who failed to note that her light had been red for approximately 15 seconds; and · No one was hurt and she was ticketed. Stairway to Heaven is definitely a contender. When I ran my mobile DJ business in the mid-70s EVERY gig had to end with Stairway to Heaven. This is an interesting question, different from what annoying ear worms do you never want to hear again, e.g., anything by the Cowsills. Stairway... isn't a bad song, but enough already.

Oldbuckster and Colter, IMO, are correct. Clipping is the danger. You're more likely to get clipping from an underpowered amplifier that's being asked to deliver more than it can. Nevertheless, if you overdrive a high powered amplifier to the point of clipping you'll cause damage also. Intuitively, high powered clipping is more dangerous than low powered clipping.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> With efficient horn speakers there should not be any reason to drive even a moderately powered amplifier to the point of clipping. One of the benefits of tube equipment is the way it responds to being overdriven. It's my understanding that its a softer gentler clipped signal than that sent by overtaxed SS gear. I speak from experience about the evils of high powered SS clipping. In the mid-70s, while a student, I used four 8 ohm Speakerlab SKhorns in a mobile DJ business. With two per side in parallel, that presented a 4 ohm load to the Dynaco ST-400 amplifier, i.e., 300 watts/channel. By the end of each evening the volume was at ear bleed levels; the SKhorns played LOUD and clear. The evidence of high powered clipping was regularly fried T-35s. I must have replaced a dozen T-35 voice coils over two years. Id call EV (then at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /> 600 Cecil St., Buchanan, MI ) on Monday and theyd send out the diaphragm(s) along with an invoice (my recollection is that they were about $15 each). Id be good to go by the weekend. Those were the days when a company like EV would give a student an open account and mail replacement parts without requiring pre-payment.

Now that's interesting. Has anyone here ever seen one of these before? The woodworking looks good. With a real balancing network and the right source material this could sound very good. I cast a VOT for this to be dubbed the original Cornscala.

I take it the practice rooms are relatively small. If so, those should be just the ticket. OTOH for a larger space, I put a pair of these in the my son's band room . . .

These "beauties" spent 3 decades in a bar in Ohio. They're now in a high school band practice room. The extremely rough exteriors were quickly cleaned up with Bondo and aluminum trim. Not the look for a living room, but then La Scalas are happier when not in a living room.
