  1. I've blown more tweeters with lower power than high power.
  2. Just brought home a pair of Quartets. Powering them with a Carver TFM-35 (250w @ 8 ohm, 380 @ 4 ohm) and they sound great.
  3. We’ll assume amplification is good. First verify all connections are secure. Loosen and tighten every screw on the crossover barrier strip and try again. This fixes many speakers. If still having trouble you’ll need a good volt/ohm multi meter to measure resistance etc. Good luck!
  4. Oak Oil Quartets! Not sure why the pic is sideways. Anyway. I’m enjoying them, but not sure I’ll keep them mostly due to placement issues.
  5. If they were only in Atlanta......
  6. Driver break in. I recently bought a second pair of SMAHL tweeters for my La Scalas. The first seconds sounded horible. Then they smoothed out. From crackle to crystal.
  7. It may be overkill in many opinions here, but I say that's perfect. Just keep the volume at safe levels. Enjoy!
  8. A good power conditioner should do the trick.
  9. I’d rather have more than I need. Not that I trust meters, but I rarely go over 10 watts with my Onkyo M-504 with my Cornwalls or LaScala. Not that I’m in the room with them at that volume. That being said. Room size, placement, seating, music style, and preference. Using a small tube amp didn’t do it for me. A 40 watt tube amp wasn’t bad, but when you really wanna turn it up you can’t beat raw power. My opinion. My preference. I have Chorus I with a small Class A SS and it’s plenty at half to 2/3 volume. Different room and placement. Now the Carver tfm-35 powering Heresy II in a small room is too much. It was connected to something else before I brought them home. back to @Khorn I haven’t had the pleasure of Khorns yet. No corners or a good room for them yet. 😉 It’s been my experience with other Klipsch (CW LS Chorus) as well as other speakers using high current amps (mostly NAD and HK) they sound excessively bright with higher efficiency speakers and are less forgiving to flawed sources. My guess is the tube pre helps alleviate that brightness.
  10. No, but looking for a second tfm-35. Good luck!
  11. I’m using a cheap Chinese jlhood 1969 with my Chorus I and love it. I haven’t tried it on my Cornwalls.
  12. You have plenty of options then! Schiit I hear good things about, but never personally heard anything through them. If you go vintage get something that’s already serviced and 70+ watts.
  13. It’s been a number of years since I’ve listened to a Yamaha (CR-1020) of that vintage, but recall it being pretty good. With the low wattage you should be fine in a medium room so long as you don’t push it too hard. More power is better if going louder.
  14. I like vintage myself. Problem with vintage amps is they occasionally fail. I was running my ‘79 CWs with an HK Citation 16 until it decided to go. It took a woofer with it. Woofer replaced and I still haven’t learned my lesson, but if this original Onkyo M-504 blows….. Anyway I like vintage power….
  15. I say buy for 2k and sell the Altec horns and drivers.
  16. Maybe not in the living room but in the basement or shop they'd be perfect.
  17. Before Covid I took a pair to the mountains to a huge cabin with like 25 foot vaulted ceilings and they filled the space quite well. Wasn’t a hip hop kind of weekend so no one missed the bass. We didn’t have neighbors to piss off thank goodness.
  18. No. It was there before swelling. There’s faint water marks along the edges of the trim. Frat parties. Worse than houseplants.
  19. Thanks for the confirmation. I was leaning that way with the trim. Too bad it didn’t prevent the moisture swelling. They surely don’t need to be louder! If that’s the only advantage I’ll pass. If I wanna be louder I have La Scalas upstairs. 😉
  20. These will be in rotation with others in my basement listening area as well as possibly going out when we have cabin weekends with friends (rentals usually don’t have a sound system) etc. They’ll be easier to handle with handles. I usually use my other HII or r15 bookshelf and a sub for this. If I wanna go bigger I have 2 RW-12d subs I can put with them.
  21. And the rest of the story….. They appear to be birch veneer. Not sure they are sealed. They were once owned by a rental company. Name stenciled on backs. So they added the plastic edging, corners, and handles. A fraternity purchased them in the early 90s and used them for parties. Next owner purchased them from the frat. Now. All that said. They look pretty good. No drink rings… However there is some water damage that caused swelling in a few places. But no real staining. Bumps and bruises yes, but probably a lot better than if they had been naked. One broken binding post and missing one badge. I opened one and it looked clean and unmolested. Label on bottom of cabinet with checklist. I’m yet to do any real critical listening, but they sound good. All drivers work.
  22. Well I’ve been here a while. I’m no stranger to the “process”. I plan to listen before any upgrades or changes. My assumption on the handles is that if they were owner installed they may leak or resonate. I won’t know for sure until later. I have another pair of H II and love them (Crites crossovers and titanium diaphragm in tweeters). They had a blown tweeter and a bad crossover when I got them. Not sure I wanna go the H III upgrade route, but not out of the realm and the have the rectangular cups. As for porting I figured I’d ask for advice since someone else has already cut out cabs for handles.
  23. I’m picking up (rescuing) some H II speakers today and I’m unsure of whether or not they came with road trim. Owner got them this way in early 90s. Anyone know if they may have come this way? Terminal cups say Heresy II, labels appear to be gone. I plan to check them over and possibly rebuild crossovers (probably JEM), titanium tweeter diaphragms, and some dynamat on inside of handles. If they were modified and not born this way would it really hurt to port them like the pro model?
