  1. I should have prefaced my statement with the type of music you listen to. I like the 45 and 2A3 amps for small Jazz Combos and Female vocal type music, which is what Ilisten to about 95% of the time. If you listen to a lot of rock music on your home system, you would probably prefer the 300B or a Push-Pull Tube amp. To hear a SET 45 or 2A3 amp 'bloom' in your room, you need to put on some Diana Krall and she will appear (in your ears) in your listening room. So, did I guess correctly, that you are mostly listening to other types of music ? Rock or Cuntry ?
  2. Not Colin, but it was my quote. SET amps excell in the midrange. I do have a sub woofer that I turn on once in awhile, but could easily live without it. BTW - 300B amps are not close to my favorite SET amp. Try a 45 or 2A3 for a 'True SET experience'
  3. See how this hobby is......You start off looking for an amplifer for a pair of Khorns......And now you're getting Jubilees! I am sure you'll be happy with the Jubes, most everyone is......You'll still need an amplifer.....Same comments apply for Khorns as Jubs.
  4. I think that it is a far stretch to think you can buy one amplifier for a pair of Khorns and live with it for the duration. I would guess that almost everyone on this forum has gone through at least a half dozen amps, before we settled on a couple that we like. I am down to about 3 for my Khorns now. All SET amps. a 45, 2A3 and a 300B. Again my recomendation is to try and find a pair of Khorns near you that are driven by tube amps and when you find an amp you like buy it. Keep listening to as many as you can and then you can join the rest of us in selling used tube amps and buying replacement ones. That is the nature of this hobby.
  5. "Best' is highly subjective. You'll have to answer that yourself after hearing a lot of different amps. This may take you a couple years of arranging auditions. My 'Best' is a 45 SET amp. A 2A3 SET amp is my second choice.
  6. I wonder what a Case of 2A3 RCA Single Plates would have cost in 1968 ? I should have bought a couple!
  7. Buying a pair of 'unheard' speakers for $7 Grand based on glowing recommendations from some audiophiles. One was a former Khorn owner (Not part of this forum however) that I put a lot of faith in. They sounded terrible. The 'audition' cost me $2 Grand. Speakers will go unnamed, but you can PM me if interested.
  8. I went through this process a few years ago....Got the software, The Mics etc. etc...... I initally set up the Mic where my listening psoition was and took some measurements with frequency sweeps. They looked pretty good ! What was disappointing was that by moving the Mic just a few inches and angling it slightly, it produced a completely different sweep. So the information was not that valuable to me. I could make an almost perfect sweep just by moving the Mic a tad. Move it a couple inches again, and it looked like I needed a Complete system makeover. I have compared notes with a few of my friends and they came to similar conclusions. This was my experience.......YMMV
  9. Anytime you want to set something up, I'm game!....I Like my Lobster Tail out of the Shell on Skewers and then placed on the Grill with lots of Butter...I'll supply the beer and wine. I've also got some new toys... More Tube Amps and a Digital Re-clocker that should be here in a couple days..removes jitter, so they say. MOG is the real deal...No need to buy any more music and no need for CDs, CD Players or even maintaining a digital library on a computer. Come on Over![]
  10. So do you load up your Khorns and Tube amps and throw them in the back of your pickup?[]
  11. $10 for a Tuner is a Steal ! --- Where did you find that? You should pay a visit to my place and pick up your Receiver. I can also show you what I use now for Music ----- MOG......In case you have not seen it.
  12. I no longer'Download' Music.....I just play it from the 'Cloud'.....I use MOG.com......It is the best Music Source that I have used in 40 years of Audio. I have access to over 1 Million Albums, that are CD qualit for $5 a month.....I don't need to spend money on music anymore.
  13. Cheap Connectors ?.............. I have talked to WBT (Mfgr of Expensive Connectors) and even they admitted that the best Connector was no Connector at all. So, Now we are down to simple wire......Copper, Silver what's your pleasure?....... The outside sheath, the Panty Hose Covering, the cables presented in the Rosewood Display Case are all marketing materials.....What makes a Good Wire?.....Forget the connector, it's useless as far as sound goes.. Let's put some science into this discussion....Ears are too subjective, and vary depending on mood, Health etc. What material makes a good, great wire?....Once we know this...We'll just buy it and hook it up. .......Or do you have to constantly vary your wire depending on mood, Type of Music, atomospheric pressure or a review that you read in High-End Audio Magazine? "Listening" to wires is far too subjective and a meaningless exercise. Are you listening to the Connector or the Wire? A 100% oxygen free copper wire should sound the same as another, despite the sheathing or packaging or price...... Let's get back to science....Yes, the earth is round despite what you see out your back door.
  14. I prefer Solar.....The highs are much brighter and the Mids are a nice warm sound....
  15. The best I have owned was the the Marantz 20B.....Smoked the Mcintosh MR-71 that I had. I got rid of all my Tuners after I got a Squeezebox Touch.....Now I use MOG which provides better fidelity than any Tuner I've heard. True CD Quality. This is with the SBT plugged into a High Quality DAC.
  16. Dave, I use 100% Copper that has been silver plated....It sounds the same as copper.
  17. I would suggest auditioning tube amps before getting one. There is no hurry. Otherwise, you will be upgrading again (Ask me how I know this). Your La Scalas will handle a wide variety of topologoies of tube amps. Push Pull, OTL and SET amp. There are proably some forum members in your area and most of them will give you an audition. If you're lucky, a forum member or someone else you know, will bring their tube amps over to your system in your home for you to try.
  18. The most critical aspect of an interconnect is the length. If the interconnect is not long enough to reach from the componet to the Pre Amplifier, you will definitely hear a difference.
  19. I'm in the Minneapolis area and you are welcome for a demo at my place if you happen to be in the area. I have 45,2A3 and 300B set amps driving my Khorn/Altec Midrange Combination.
  20. It should be very easy to get an audition of Khorns from a forum member. There are probably quite a few located within an hour's drive of you. Put the word out in a separate post. Once you hear them, you may try to make room for them. You can always hear mine if you ever come to Minneapolis.
  21. Don't rule out Klipschorns. They tuck neatly into a corner and take up less room than other speakers. I am guessing that your Cornwalls are in the middle of the wall and take up more living space. My Khorns take up far less room than the Belles that I had. If you've got a couple good corners there is a lot of wasted space that is never used, that could accomodate Khorns. I beleive that a Khorn Footprint takes up fewer Square inches than a Cornwall also.
  22. I was in my workshop today and noticed one of the speakers was not working. This has happened before with my Crown Components from the 70's. The usual culprit is the contacts on the pre-amp. So, I went through the normal polishing them with fine steel wool and cleaning with alcohol. No progress at all. Then I think I may have a channel out on the amp.....Start swapping things...keep coming up empty. After about 1 hour moving things out from shelves, cleaning.....swapping......I decide to change the radio station......Wa! La!......Everything works. The internet streaming of the radio station was missing the right channel. That of course was the last thing I suspected. The FM from the station was fine. I sent them an e-mail, telling them what I found....Checked the station about 1 hour later and no channels are working......I guess they are working on it.
  23. Congratuations on building a very nice looking Room!....Excellent work! However, It has got some big problems for Audio! In my opinion, you've got a bigger problem taming the room reflections, than finding proper corners for Khorns. As Pictured, that room would echo like a church. The hard ceilings and walls and floors and windows would have sound bouncing and echoing at different intervals that any speaker would sound like crap. So, here are my Recommendations. 1.) If money is no object, hire an acoustic company and tell them what you plan to use the room for. 2.) If you want to save money. You are going to have to educate yourself in treating room acoustics. There are a lot of books on the subject. This will lead you to doing a lot of expensive things. You be probably be getting some really thick carpeting on the floor. Adding Bass Traps to all corners (this can be expensive too). Accoustic ceiling treatment also. Wall treatments, window treatments etc. etc. ......This is a big job, but will be more rewarding than any electronics that you will buy. 3.) Once you do this Khorns will probably work very well. I had my Khorns in an acoustic friendly room, while I was building proper corners and was amazed how good they sounded just pushed close to a wall near a corner. Not sealed at all! ....... 4.) Once the room is treated you could put one Khorn in a corner and one with a false corner on the long wall. Maybe 20 feet apart. The false corner could be in the middle of the room, 20 feet or so from the corner on the long wall. Good luck and do it right!
  24. How much Free Music do you get?........I immediately went with the $5 a month. This will save me about $300 a year on new music. It was a no brainer for myself. Curious, how much did you usually spend on music in a year?
