  1. I use the Penta Labs KT88s in my VRDs. A little more bass than the ValveArts. Otherwise, not much difference that I can hear. Both are bargains IMO. The Pentas cost a bit more but seem to last longer.
  2. Those are really beautiful! I'd be tempted to buy one if I didn't have the originals on both my 299 and 299b. I love the birdseye.
  3. So, did you figure out the problem? Craig did wonders with my X-100. You might want him to give it the once over either way. He'll make it sing.
  4. I remember the Charles Chips guy. He drove a big UPS-like van. Their chips always seemed burnt to me but my mother loved them.
  5. Anyone remember: Kimba The White Lion Sinbad The Sailor with Salty The Parrot By His Side (they were a fearless crew) Beenie and Cecil Hercules (with his friend Newton - half horse, half boy - I'm hip, I'm hip) Felix The Cat I remember rushing home from school, maybe first grade (1966?), to watch The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and the rest of the Marvel superhero cartoons.
  6. Don't take Mr. Hing's word for it. Listen for yourself. There are many who actually prefer Cornwalls to Khorns. They have a unique sound. Keep us posted. - The Other Mr. Powers
  7. Your memory is pretty good, it was one season and mid way through they switched from prehistoric times to bringing the cavemen to the present time, they also did change the words to the theme song at the same time. I only know this from using google and looking it up, I was really young and didn't remember that much, I mostly remembered that I really liked the show. What I remember most about the show is the theme song, however we had different lyrics: It's about time It's about space It's about time to slap your face. You had to be careful not to get slapped by the person singing (usually my big sister).
  8. Brent, I ran my Cornwalls with a big 70s Kenwood SS receiver for 20 years before moving to tubes. Tom is right, you will either love them or you won't. I don't know many who don't like the sound. BTW - Nice last name.[] GP
  9. That's it! Top Value Stamps. Thanks. We still have Arbys here in MD. Hot Shops and Jr. Hot Shops Roy Rogers Double R Bar Burgers Lincoln Logs Etch-a-scetch Tinker Toys Chemistry Sets
  10. I remember all of those. My milkman was Skippy from Thompson's Dairy. When we got older, my sister and I would tease our little brothers, telling them they looked more like Skippy than Dad. They didn't understand. We had both Green Stamps and the Yellow ones. I think I still have a few million stashed away somewhere. I never turned them in before they went belly up. Spirographs and Super-Spirographs How about Creepy Crawlers!!! How great were the 60s when you could leave your kid alone with a metal mold that heated up to around 250 degrees, plugged into the wall socket with a 4 foot cord!
  11. Gumby and Pokey Wonderama and Ranger Hal (both local to DC area) Hot Wheels (wish I hadn't let my little brothers destroy my collection!) My green schwinn 3 speed chopper with banana seat (very cool but heavy and slow) The Washington Senators (could sit anywhere you wanted at RFK since nobody every showed up) Grade school = K - 6th, Jr. High = 7-9, High School = 10-12 We rode our bikes or walked to school - only fear was bullies, not pedophiles Halloween - hundreds of kids walking through the neighborhood trick or treating for Unicef (Unicef boxes given out in school) Baseball card packs had gum inside If you were really bad, you got the belt (I lived in fear of the belt my entire childhood although I only got whacked once or twice)
  12. $400 is a great deal if they're in decent shape. Cornwalls are wonderful with acoustic jazz. They also sound great with rock, classical, or just about any other music. They are more forgiving than some of the other, more efficient Klipsch Heritage models but you might not hear it switching from the Vandesteens. I bought my '80 Cornwalls new and I've tried many, many different amp/preamp combos over the years. The Scott 299b I currently use sounds terrific. I prefer the EL-84 over the KT-88 with Cornwalls but I know plenty of folks who use KT-88 amps with great success. You will need to decide for yourself. Good luck and welcome to the forum!
  13. I think you need to send me a couple 12AX7s "for test purposes only." I'll make sure they don't blow up and catch your house on fire or damage your equipment.[] Edit: BTW - I'm sure the wife will be THRILLED that you're getting rid of all those bulky tubes from the garage!!
  14. Well done. I'm a 1960 baby and remember most of it very well. I still remember sitting down with the family to watch The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. Those were the days.
  15. You should have plenty of room. I brought mine home in a much smaller '98 Toyota Sienna and had room to spare. Like everyone said, bring lots of padding!! Good luck!
  16. Aaaaah...reminds me of a quote by Thornton Mellon....from the movie "Back To School"............. One of my favorite lines! I use it every chance I get!![]
  17. Actually, another KG-4 would be perfect. I don't know if the passive would be an issue for placement purposes but an exact match across the front cannot be beat. If you buy another pair, you can use the 2nd as a rear center assuming your receiver is so equipped and if you're anywhere near NYC, I just happen to know where you can find a nice pair on the inexpensive side!
  18. Please don't get any of those Jubilee guys started....you know how sensative they are... I decided not to include the nuts who bring movie theater speakers into their homes. You guys are in a class of your own. Talk to me when you got no class.[]
  19. I still haven't figured out why I got 2 remotes with my Sony HT receiver back in 2002! The one with the LED screen I just left in the box and I know just enough to get by with the other. [:S]
  20. Congrats on your purchase! It's a great machine and virtually indestructible. Advice: DO NOT use the crappy fluid or brushes they send with the unit (assuming they're the same I got with mine). Either figure out how to make your own fluid or: Call the Disc Doctor guy and use his stuff. You definitely want the rubber handled brushes, one for cleaning fluid and one for distilled water. All you need is two, then you can buy replacement stick & peel pads when they wear out. He also sells replacement stick & peels for your vacuum tube for about $4. Otherwise it costs about $25 to replace the tube when the pads wear out. I'll post a link shortly. That's advice from someone who's cleaned over 1,000 records on a 16.5. I'm sure others will chime in. Edit: http://www.discdoc.com/ Careful. He''ll talk your ear off. Don't let him talk you into buying more than you need and I don't bother rinsing my brushes in a pan like he suggests. I just make sure I keep the brushes separated and use one for fluid and the other for water if you decide to do a rinse cycle (which I highly recommend).
  21. Very cool! I have the Layla SACD and it sounds great. I'll bet the MFSL sounds even better!! Dennie - I sent you another email, one I probably should have sent first.[:$]
  22. I bought a VPI 16.5 used for $300 about 6 years ago. So far its cleaned hundreds and hundreds of records with no sign of slowing down. I don't use it much anymore because I stopped going to thrift shops. Most of my vinyl these days is new and I stopped cleaning new vinyl a long time ago. Someone once told me cleaning new vinyl was a good idea but I decided that's a bunch of hooey made up by the folks who sell record cleaning supplies.
  23. That's awesome! I just saw it on TV. Just enough to shut things down but not enough to do much damage. Go sleding! Have fun!!
