  1. NICE!... Welcome to the forum. Dee
  2. One more thought... Watching the tech guys set up a nice sound system in my church was interesting. They used (wish I knew what it was, but my state is ignorant bliss :-) some instrument to "shoot" the room and then make adjustments to compensate for the room acoustics. Aside from just having fun, I would think that would be the most helpful element in having an EQ at home. Regards, Dee
  3. I don't use an equalizer, but am often glad that my Sunfire tube preamp does have contour controls to boost the bass or treble when there is a recording that needs some compensation, or to listen at lower volumes. The idea of having an amplifier without any control in that area wasn't attractive to me. Dee
  4. Don't have anything to offer regarding outboard DAC's. I had been listening to an Ah! Njoe Tjoebs CD player for a while. Sounded great, then got curious about their upsampler option. Bought and installed it. If I understand what it does, and that is a disclaimer for this rank layman, it's a poor man's DAC, which is proprietary and dedicated to the Njoe Tjoebs player alone. Anyway, months ago I read a review stating that the upsampler was like lifting a veil off the music. That description fit with my experience and with a result that was surprising to me in the impact it has. Regards, Dee
  5. Was wondering if anyone has had satisfactory experience ordering anything from Layne Audio. http://www.speakersupply.com/ From reading the site, they've got lots of cool stuff, parts, replacement speakers, all kinds of stuff. I've been unsuccessfully attempting over several months to contact the guy. Sounds from his voice mail that it could be a one guy shop and he's out on installations or something. Anyway, never have gotten any response to multiple voice mail and e-mail messages and have never gotten a real person to pick up the phone. He's even got one woofer that is supposed to be an improvement over stock for Heresy. Interested to hear if anyone has been able to make contact, and if so, any hints as to how to get in touch with the guy is appreciated! Dee
  6. Doesn't sound like all this tube talk has gotten you too curious about it. Dee
  7. IMHO, the issue with tubes and rock is not will they do it well, they'll do it great as long as you have enough power. In my listening to different tube topologies to find out what I liked best, for me it is the 2A3 SET amps. That's a completely subjective preference, however, in audition all these different amps I found out the truth of what another forum member had shared. 2A3 works for simple type jazz, vocals, etc. But when the musical program starts to get complex and really loud, the amp is beyond what it can do. Now that's just the limitation of that typology. There are tube amps that can also blow the windows out of your house. It's just finding the right amp. Of course, what sounds "right" to your ears is what's right! Dee Dee
  8. S. Dave, Yep, that sets off my crap detector, too. Dee p.s. Hopefully Mc wouldn't really appreciate the salesman's presentation. That just sounds different than what I'd expect.
  9. A.F. Thanks. Did you know that J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis were good friends? Cool. Dee
  10. Jalen, Wish I had heard some of the units you have heard on demo. Sure have been curious about them. Ended up making my decision more out of needing to smooth out my source with tubes. That along with the standard still to be shaken out, kept me from getting curious enough to try them out, at least in terms of purchase. I have read posts from other forum members who have quite favorable impressions of SACD and/or DVD-A gear. That would be worth a search to see which units these folks were talking about. One other interesting thought of something on the horizon. At this year's big audio show, whatever it's called, amnesia strikes again! Anyway, there are some new SACD models with tubes. They are still a little pricey for me, but conventional wisdom is that they will become more competitively priced in the future. I would think that a big part of the decision is if the SACD gear sounds good on your system and you like it, then that's a pretty strong case for it. A pretty significant consideration for me was La Scala's sounding harsh on the SS gear. Started with the speakers, and ended up changing out amplifier and CD too, in order for it to sound right. Have fun with your research and most especially with what you select for your system. Hope you can post your impressions on the forum. Sure would like to hear your take on the options and end result. Regards, Dee
  11. < While you are playing with the crossovers, one other thing you might consider is replacing the 2.5 mH inductor with an air core one with equal or lower DCR. ---------------- [/blockquote> Malcom, Thanks for these thoughts. Yep, I was referring to the networks, and thinking that crossover and network were interchangeable terms, but I am learning. Which element is the 2.5 mH inductor. Also, could use a nudge where to find one. What is the DCR? Rank newbie help needed here. Dean, when you are talking about replacing wire, I need help there, too. Appreciate in advance translating this into Pre Kindergarten level of comprehension. Dee
  12. Chris, No problem on picking up an old thread. I was reading it and composing a response to chime in on encouraging the guy to keep the Chorus. Then noticed the dates. Probably would have missed it otherwise. I wonder what he is listening to today??? Dee
  13. Working on a Heresy fixer-upper project and am looking at a couple of options on crossovers and wondering which of these might be preferable.,.. E or E2? The E is the version with the large metal can type capacitors. I have read some posts on the forum about upgrading and tweaking Heresy crossovers. There seems to be consensus that building the ALK crossover for Cornwall or Heresy yields not as dramatic improvement as it does in La Scala, and with the Heresy's lesser value has trouble coming in as a feasible option, though I don't know what the cost of parts would be for the ALK option. In reading the earlier posts, I was seeing some ideas for upgrading parts and improving things with mods, but with me we need a special forum category called Odds and Mods for Dummies. Or the Idiots guide to Heresy upgrades. Any thoughts appreciated. These will end up being very nice, and I'd like to get the sound optimized as well. regards, Dee
  14. Justin, Thanks for the URL. Don't see Tweeter's in Arkansas. Looks like a cool store. Hope Klipsch and Tweeter's do get it together again. Regards, Dee
  15. I'm assuming that Tweeter is a chain of audio stores... What part of the country? I've lived a sheltered rural life. Dee p.s. Klipsch decided not to distribute through Tweeters? Why is that?

Yes, The RF-7 is extremely accurate, and does an admirable job of reproducing the sound of running water when called upon to do so. The best Heritage can do with the sound of running water and rainfall is to spit out the sound of frying bacon. ---------------- Dean, Is that really true? As I read your post, it doesn't read like your kidding about the difference in RK and Heritage. Haven't done personal comparison, but this is one of those amazing things that whatever magic heritage does, music is more pleasing than something more accurate. Seems like I read something in a thread about this months ago where someone articulated a resonable explanation for how this was so. Dee
  17. Double Post A.N. --Yep, amazing. And I have to admit, my skepticism was huge about it, too. Dee

  19. Damon, Just enjoy! You've got a nice system there. Music is about enjoyment. It is way too easy to get tied up in acquiring more gear and still not enjoying it. Saw a bumper sticker the other day: The guy who dies with the most toys.... ...is still dead! I know up close and personal how easy it is to let getting more stuff diminish or destroy the joy. Regards, Dee
  20. I'd just have to add that I had no idea how much a tube CD could improve and smooth out listening to music. My player is Njoe Tjoebs, not Jolida, but what people say about getting the source right, seem to be right on. Regards, Dee p.s. imec-- welcome to the forum.
  21. Tom, Are the ALK's amazing or what? I haven't compared the LS to RF's so don't have that to draw on. Is what you describe as "dark" sounding, maybe the great midrange and trebs not quite so much out front? I'm just as happy to have not experienced the AL's. In terms of Klipsch history, did the AL's come after the AA's? Regards, Dee

I don't imagine that you will find the taste of the grapes sour at all!
