  1. Tom, Nice looking Scalas! Definitely in a man's domain! Dee
  2. Tom, I posted a reply here earlier on, but suppose the computer hiccupped because it doesn't show up. To my ears, I was amazed at the difference that the ALK crossovers made. Al built a pair for my La Scala buildup project. I had one of the new La Scala's finished first, so I hooked it up on one channel and the stock 1977 (AA) on the other. The ALK's made the La Scala come to life. I knew the ALK's would be good, but I didn't really expect to hear as much as the reviews I'd read. A to B, even I could tell. I had always thought I'd damp the horns, but I've just never gotten around to it. Maybe someday out of simple curiousity, but so far haven't felt much of a need for it. A further improvement was adding the Njoe Tjoebs CD as a source. That improvement was almost as significant as the ALK's. Regards, Dee p.s. it seems to me that on networks he has built, Al will take them back if the user is unsatisfied.
  3. Sorry for the multiple posts. Thought the server or my pc was locked up. Only press the submit button once, no matter what.

Pack Rat, Don't sit on it to long, at that price, it will be snagged! That's why Dean posted it, it's a steal. If I didn't just fund the La Scala's, and now networks for them, because the AL's suck the big one, I'd snag it. Tom ---------------- Tom, You found ALK's for your Scala's? Already? Cary does build some fine looking stuff. Rocks, too. I bet! Dee
  8. Peter, I was listening to LaScala's on Hafler and it sounded harsh for me. For my speakers to sound right to me, it took a tube amp and a tube cd player. if you're happy with the sound just be happy. Klipsch speakers can become a money pit one feels compelled to change everything from the source to the speakers. My hafler was a dh220, and several different hafler preamps. Your stuff may be cleaner than mine was. REgards, Dee
  9. Craig, The recommendation that this is the Fisher integrated amp best suited for horns sounds really interesting. I'm wondering your take on how they would sound next to the 299's. Also, what kind ballpark or range of price would it take for you to get it back to spec. Of course, no one would hold you to a quote on an untested amp, just wondering best case to worst case best educated guess. Thanks. Dee
  10. Craig, That will be interesting to hear how that turns out. Dean, Did you see President Bush at Wright-Pat yesterday? Thought that was a pretty cool way to do the 4th.

There are some fuses on the inside that were blown. Looked like a power surge had done it in. Also, had a buddy show me a neat trick to replace the lights behind the slide rule dial. They are little lights that look just like fuses. We just soldered the leads of some kind of little lamp, (he's an electrical engineer, and made the selection at R Shack) to the metal end caps on the burned out fuse type light, and placed it back in the holders. worked great. Dee p.s. Fini, if you do decide to junk it for parts, I'd be interested. Hope you can get it happy, though.
  12. Yep, It is interesting. I'd read one reviewer who had said they could listen to the Rocket 88 in triode 20 wpc louder than in pentode at 40 wpc. I didn't find that the case with this particular material at all. As there has been alot in the posts over this weekend, the subjective opinion and preference is always a factor. Wish you were here to hear this amp rock the La Scalas with McCartney and Wings. I don't think I've ever heard any better sound rockin. On the flip of a switch change, that does make sense that one mode or the other would have to be compromised to make it work.
  13. O.K. Here's a report on some questions. Dean is right on pentode! While I still prefer the 2a3 for the quiet jazz material, I hadn't listened to enough material to find out how the Rocket 88 could shine in pentode. Amazing! Put on Paul McCartney and Wings... the live Wings over America CD. Venus and Mars was breaking up on the 2A3, just as Sunny said it would with complex material. O.K. Change over to Rocket 88, sounds flat in triode, makes the La Scala's sing sing sing in Pentode. Man it was great. Now I don't think I'll be able to sell the Rocket 88 after all. Regards, Dee
  14. MAD Magazine Goes HiFi -- 1958 http://www.hifilit.com/hifilit/Mad/Mad.htm Happy Birthday America! Enjoy!
  15. Tom, That's an interesting question, what expense to go to the next level. One question I have about preamps is when used inbetween a cd player with a signal strong enough to drive a power amp on it's own, is there anything it can really do to improve upon the source signal? Playing vinyl would be seemingly a quite different question. Regards, Dee
  16. Cool! That will be a fun project with great end results! Regards, Dee p.s. I don't know what I'm up to in terms of building competence, but have been wondering about Paraglows or Welborne Labs, in kit form or factory wired.
  17. Have you made a decision yet? I have been wondering about the Paraglows myself. Have been using Paramours for a few weeks and they are awesome. In fact, it is hard to imagine much better sound. Dee
  18. MaxG, Sounds great. Can't wait to see the pics. Which Tony helped with the design? Were you inspired by the Heresy on steroids that ALK did? If you are really all thumbs, that give me some hope for the DIY world Dee
  19. Dean, and others. I've got a Hafler 220 that I've been wondering what to do with. If there's somebody who would want to try this out, I'd sure be interested to discuss offering the amp and paying the cost of mods. Also, hope the builder would keep the amp for a season to enjoy their work. I could get it back whenever. That would be such a good deal for me, I hope no one would take offense that it may not be an actual win-win thing. However, I should add an additional disclaimer, without the skills to read a schematic, I don't know if this is a mod for a 220 or not. I sincerely appreciate the spirit of this forum in sharing the collective base of knowledge with folks who are rank lay persons in such. Maybe the forum should take Dean's suggestion of having a section of posts that are FAQ's. We could name it FAQ: Idiots Guide to Tubes or something. As always, best regards, Dee
  20. Great post. Wish I coulda been in Indy, too! Dee

Though the Mark IIIs may be outputting 1 watt with peaks reaching 10 watts for your normal listening the 2A3s are probably pushing .2 watts with 2 watt peaks." It doesn't work that way. Craig used both amps on the same set of speakers - his LaScalas. What he is saying is that with the LaScalas -- The Dynacos were generating 10 watt peaks at 1 watt continuous, and the Parmours were generating 2 watt peaks at 1 watt continuous. Something else we could turn the conversation to is the concept of recovery after clipping. -------------------------------------------------- O.K. guys, I've got a couple of questions, and of course there is some subjective preference here, too. For the engineering types, did the guy may any legitimate points on his review on the original link in this thread? Dean, I'd sure be interested to hear about recovery after clipping. Is this the deal in my 2A3's seem to be more forgiving than one would expect with their small power? I've noticed that most 2A3's are rated at 3.5 wpc. Does anyone know why the Paraglow's are rated at 2.7 (I think) wpc? When PWK is saying "What the world needs is a good 5 watt amp." does this mean he didn't care for a 300b SET? Also, with a 2A3 in PP, is this multiple 2a3's in series or parallel or whatever push pull, in order to have more powerful output.... anyway the question is, do the 2A3 lovers think this still does the magic for them? Or does it have to be low power. Appreciate any feedback here. Didn't want to start a new thread on this one. Best REgards, Dee
  23. Go Gary! What kind of speakers do you think the seven foot coffin shaped rascals were? REgards, Dee
  24. Welcome to the Forum. You are getting some good advice here in the responses to your question. To pick up on what NOZ said, all except for the part about saving yourself the trouble by sending him the cabs, if your financial investment is a consideration, it would be good to get an idea about how much it would cost to assemble the elements piecemeal. There is a huge base of knowledge on this forum about the fair market value of all kinds of speaker parts. In my observation of Ebay prices and as someone mentioned in a earlier post, the best value on woofers would be to purchase new directly from Klipsch. In my observation Ebay sellers do pretty well on these, and to my sense of value and price point, a factory fresh woofer is worth a few bucks more, when there's only a few dollars difference between an unknown used speaker and a new one. The advice on ALK crossovers is good. You can build your own or have Al K himself do the work for you. His website is www.alkeng.com. The AA crossovers are available on Ebay and there are also posts on this board and folks who have experience in optimizing them with mods for a more economical solution. I was personally amazed at the difference in sound that the ALK crossovers made in La Scalas. There are folks right here on this forum who can help with refurbing horn drivers, if needed. BEC on this forum has usually got tweeter diaphrams on Ebay and can do the repair for you if desired. There may be others on the forum who can do the same thing. I have got a couple of pairs of tweeters I could make available. One pair is the older alinco magnet version, in excellent condition. Also some NOS tweeters by University Sound with the newer ceramic magnets. There are fans of both on this forum. Let me know if you'd have an interest. If you enjoy the adventure of getting parts together and assembling your own project, then this will be a huge amount of fun. I did this myself with some Oak La Scala cabinets that are absolutely beautiful. It is, however, more expensive than finding a nice pair of (complete and working) La Scalas out on Ebay or somewhere else. For furniture refinishing types, lots of folk buy Klipsch Heritage with rough cabinets and do the refinishing themselves, too. Having fun with such a project leaves one with a deep satisfaction. Regards, Dee
  25. Audible nectar, This is a nice post. The Klipsch forum has certainly been a blessing to me. Regards, Dee
