  1. We just got an infocus projector for our youth group at church. We've been well pleased with it. I'm not sure of the model, while sitting here at my pc, but it has about 3000 lumens. Dee
  2. Well, the case looks good. Will be looking forward to seeing the finished product! Dee
  3. Bass reflex? Is that the type speaker the bass bin would become? I'm not exactly clear on the speaker types, but what is happening is that this extension gives a path for the sound behind the cone to get out of the dog house? Does that have an impact on how the horn would work? I'll be very interested to hear a report on how this sounds in the real world. Regards, Dee p.s. it is creative way to have an easily reversible option to check this out w/o cutting a hole in the top of the doghouse!
  4. Mike, Andy, Greg, Ben, Chris. Thanks for your thoughts here. Good stuff. Life is good. Dee

That is a function of your DAC, right? I'd been wondering about the effect. If I'm conceiving it right, it's kind of like smoothing out a the coordinates of a parabola by interpolating what the intervening, or inbetween dots would be. It would happen so many times a second, it's almost surprising that we could hear the smoother sound, but then we are certainly fearfully and wonderfully made. Regards, Dee
  6. Tony and Tom, Thanks for your thoughts here. Yep, I ordered one of the OPamp options with the player, haven't checked it out yet. It was the non Burr-Brown option. BB seems to be known for it's brightness, and that is one thing I don't need to add to my system. Fun stuff, eh? Regards, Dee
  7. Greg, Thanks for posting your experience so far on bi-amping the Khorns. I've been wondering, (just wondering and nowhere near checking it out) about bi-amping my La Scalas. Will be looking forward to your future posts when you check back to listen with the straight SET option again. Regards, Dee
  8. A little info for a newbie requested: Just to make sure I'm understanding the tube designations... the EL84/7189 is the output tube for the 299a&b? the 7591 is the output tube for the 299c? Is there an EL**designation for the 7591? Also, is the 7591 the original tube for the 299c? I have read some threads that talk about a replacement tube for the 299c, which is workable, but requires leaving the case open because of it's size. Which one is that. Appreciate any help here. I run across these tube designations often upon reading reviews on the net, and haven't got them straight in my vocabulary. Thanks. As always, regards, forum folks. Dee
  9. Friends, This is a post to share a joyful discovery, and will be in the most lay terms as I am not a real audiophile, just love music and know what is pleasing to my own ears. A few weeks ago one member of this forum was kind enough to demonstrate his Heritage and 300b based two channel an HT system. Cool. Really cool. Thanks Glen. He was playing this through the above referenced CD player and it sounded great. As I've assembled my two channel set up, first it was La Scalas, then a 299b, and now changing out a Tascam CD to this unit which is actually a stock Marantz CD4000 chassis and transport that has been modified to add tubes with the appropriate other support elements. This was very well reviewed, as was another Dutch modified Marantz, the Heart CD 6000. On the day I decided to purchase, I actually had decided to go with the Heart unit, which had been priced $150 ahead of the Ah! Njoe Tjoebs, but they were having a spring sale and the price was the same for the base model. The choice between the two was essentially a toss up. On the day (actually in the wee hours) I decided to purchase, I wasn't sure the Ah! distributor's site was secure, no padlock on the screen. So, I went to the Heart distributor and their web server could not get the item in the shopping cart. One thought was that acquiring the Heart would allow a head to head comparison with the Ah! which my buddy had. However, the Ah! distributor called first. Yep, just returning my call after my number showed up on his caller ID. The Heart guy also called and both were both gracious and attentive. I'll post the URL's, but I think that each of these is the only U.S. distributor for the products. One thing I picked up on in reviews is that the Ah! sounds good with it's stock tubes. That's nice and what I got. They do offer tube upgrades and also two other optional flavors of OP amps which can be interchanged by the user. A further option, also not selected by me, is the upsampler, which is also user installable. I did take an upgrade option package which included isolation feet, which they call Tjoeb Shoes (cute, eh?). The stock Marantz feet would be perhaps satisfactory, but they are certainly not designed with the purpose of providing isolation for tube gear. The threshold test CD for me was Liz Story with Joel DiBartolo. An unlikely choice, but one that has some strong piano notes that had not been successfully reproduced on my system to my dismay and frustration. I had even begun to think it was just a bad CD recording when I could still hear the distortion with the Ah! out of the box. After break in, it played all the notes in the sweetest clearest way. Suppose that's why they call it AH!. Now, I don't have an understanding of why these notes on this recording should be so tough to reproduce, but it was in playing these tracks while auditioning a pair of used Bose 802's for the church youth group PA that let me identify a single driver that needed replacement in a speaker which sounded fine with every other musical program. It just had a rattle and buzz when attempting to reproduce that program material. Interesting. Any forum members who could shed light on that would be appreciated. There are a hundred reviews of this CD player on Audioreview.com and lseveral audiophile of reviews on the net, if you care to check out what folks say to get the technical gist of this machine. I've read alot of them and found them helpful in the process. They basically say it would take $1200 to $1500 to better the sound of this moderately priced unit. http://www.upscaleaudio.com/main.htm AH! distributor http://www.fsaudioweb.com/menuframe.html Heart distributor Don't think one could go wrong with either of these products. I would like to hear the Heart, though couldn't imagine being more pleased than at present. That level of satisfaction in listening is something I've sought for a long time. Patience and dumb luck has allowed me to put a system together that works and at a reasonable cost (for me). Regards, Dee
  10. P.S. Josh, Your user ID Invidiosulus Hope it would not be wude of me to ask about it. I'd be interested to hear. Thanks. Dee

  12. Hamish, The horns "sideways" is no problem. That actually gives them greater dispersion side to side. There is a rare vintage version of the Cornwall, don't know the year of manufacture, that had the horns oriented in the same way. Regards, Dee
  13. Maybe the subject of this post should be "How a Scott 299 Changed the WAF Curve in My House" I came home yesterday and my wife had music on. Now that used to be unusual, (well actually never happened that I can remember) before I got a NOSValves rebuild driving my LaScalas. There was a smooth, live sounding, mellow and soulful jazz trio sound wafting through the air. I said, "so you're listening to the stereo? What CD is that?" She just smiled and said, "Thought you'd like that." Well, she headed out for a meeting and I went in the LR and to my surprise, she was running the DirecTV Jazz Channel on the system. I know this will make me sound like Gomer Pyle, but I was amazed! This has been kind of like FM USED TO BE, but ain't no mo. The last time I heard that airy jazz sound was sitting just outside the bar in a hotel atrium. It's not necessarily the same kind of program that I'd sit to listen to with undivided attention as on my CD collection, but it is a fine source of pleasant background music and when I hear something I especially like I can look at the TV screen to see who and what it is. A simple discovery, now Run Forrest Run! Regards, Dee
  14. Cut-throat, They look great... and a big improvement over your 300b's??? I'd really be interested to year your take on the difference. Also, and this might be like a wude person coming in on the end of a conversation, because you may have had an earlier thread on this, but , what is the history on these 2A3's. Welborne Labs, right? As a tube newbie who'd like to own a pair sometime, it is slightly disturbing that such a fine pair of monoblocks would have a problem with hum that would need to be corrected. Of course, I'm relieved to hear that you got it worked out to your satisfaction. They do look wonderful!!! Regards, Dee
  15. Craig. Congrats on getting your 299b in the house. I've got one of NOSValves 299b rebuilds, and it's also my first experience in tubes. My wife loves the sound, too. It is sweet. I'm definitely still finding my away around. Just this week Craig Otsby was doing some handholding for me via e-mail! Regards, Dee
  16. Craig, Yep, I'd be concerned, too, if I'd paid for Cornwalls and the seller had become unresponsive. It is rare to get badly burned on Ebay, but it does happen. I have been in correspondence with about thirty buyers who got taken by the same seller, from Canada, who was selling sets of CD's 60's, 70's etc. Sadly, I paid for all that were available. Anyway, the point is that some of the buyers who filed complaints on PayPal, got immediate shipment. The buyer has to watch, though, because there is a 30 day limit on filing a complaint. I filed on what I thought was the 30th day, by the same date the following month, and it was just tough for me. It would be appropriate to call the guy with Ebay contact info and talk with him in person ifpossible. Then if you wanted to be a good guy and give fair warning that a PayPal complaint is in the works due to non delivery, you could do that before filing the complaint. Nothing personal, there are just some serious bucks involved here. Business is business. Hope this comes to a satisfactory solution and quickly. Also, please post your progress. You've got alot of support on this forum. regards, Dee
  17. Leo, Thanks for your note. I'm not familiar with the parafeed and trad. output options on the 2A3. Is that something that all 2A3's would have? What is the difference in how they work and how they sound. Also, the 2A3's? are they all about 4 WPC? Regards, Dee
  18. Tony, Yep, the 45 is the third amp in their line and I'd been curious about that, too. I am supposing that the 2A3 or 45 would be good matches for La Scala. I've been listening to a 299b for a month or so and to my ears it is really sweet following my Haflers. Always had enjoyed them, but after getting La Scalas, they were just harsh and shrill. Regards, Dee
  19. Thanks Win, Yep, I hear good things about the Tascam. Dee
  20. Dean, now look at what you have made Craig do!!! It's getting to where we can't take you anywhere!!! Craig... awesome looking amps! Some definite shoehorning there. As always, regards, Dee
  21. Check out EICO FOR SALE post just below. $375.
  22. When I was looking around wondering where to start with tubes, I was really glad to run across a Scott 299b that had been rebuilt by NOSValves, who is a member of this forum. He does alot of checkout for folks and has got a fine rep. If you decide to get a vintage amp, he's really good. There are some posts on this forum, that suggest that in this price range, vintage has an edge over some new stuff. Noticed a post on this forum, earlier on today, where someone wanted to sell a vintage Eico tube amp. It was quite reasonable in price, $350, I think, and it was a NOSValves rebuild, too. Sorry not to know the location of that post. Regards, Dee
  23. Whistling indeed! Now that would make a great audiophile article. I'm happy to say that they are all assembled now. On wiring the bass bin, just did the barrier strip like Klipsch. It works, and no whistling. Man oh Man, do they ever sound good! I'll need to post some pics when I have a chance.
