Why is this older TV so good??

I have a 2 or 3 year old Panasonic TH-50PX600U Plasma. It is not a 1080- 780 I think. It was the baddest thing on the market right before the 1080 Panasonics came out. I am using a new Sony DA4300ES reveiver. Monster HDMI connecting components. Direct TV HiDEF reveiver.

Here's my issue. I was going to buy one of the newer 1080 sets and move this one to another room. I have looked at the new stuff in stores and and at friend's houses and except for 1 Pioneer -top of the line setup which is about equal-- my older unit looks better. The images are sharper on moving pics like sports and my blacks seem blacker. This is according to several of us- not just me- including the owners of new 1080 sets. I am not comparing this set to junk. These other sets that I have seen are Sony, Samsung, newer Panasonic, and Pioneer. My comparisons have been made from about 10 feet away. I am looking for a 52-58" size range and I will spend around 4-5k if necessary. So what is the deal ??- should I wait until the next superset comes out??

If you're looking at new TVs in a retail store, like Best Buy or Circuit City or the like, they are more than likely using regular RF coaxial cable to give the TVs their signal, which is split no less than a hundred bazillion times. Any HD signal is going to look degraded and spotty at best. Your dedicated signal is going to be very obviously better.

My personal favorite televisions are the Pioneer Elite plasmas, hands down some of the best flat panels on the market. A 60" elite will run you anywhere from $6-7K though.

I lieu of that, there are a few other displays on the market right now that will best your Panasonic when set up in the correct environment.

The links are for Best Buy but that doesn't mean they have the best price.

If you love the one you're with, its because you don't notice the cottage cheese thighs and wrinkles and she does not mind your balding head and pronounced gut. Love is good that way. If you get a prettier model, how can you be sure she will be so blind as your current model and it won't cost you a fortune down the road for a fleeting picture?
