Rockingout
Hi everyone! First time posting here. I have a theater that I am setting up and already have for speakers: RF-82, RC-62, RS-52 and now I am planning for 7.1. I am using the RS-52 on the sides. What speakers should I use as the rear for this system, RB-61, RB-81 or another set of RS-52? The room is 14x24 and seating is about 8-9 feet from back wall Thanks! Moderators Youthman Posted March 9, 2009 Moderators Share Posted March 9, 2009 Welcome to the forums. A lot of it boils down to preference. Some here have WS for side and rear. If you use it for mostly HT, it would work fine that way. If you listen to a lot of multichannel music, then some form of Direct firing speaker would be better for the rears. I'm still at 5.1 but have the RB-35's for my back speakers and will use the RS-62 for my sides. Many from this forum suggest this is an ideal way to setup a 7.1 system. Direct will of course be more directional whereas the WS will be more encompassing. This again comes down to preference. I don't think you can go wrong with either the RB-61 or RB-81 for rears. Both are great speakers. My guess is that in your case, since the main seating is 9ft away, direct firing might be the better approach. Good luck with your system. White_Hawk
I plan on having 7.1 someday, and the plan is to have rs-62 sides and rb-81/61 rears.
IndyKlipschFan
Match the back surrounds to the side surrounds as much as possible! (Drivers series) Same series and height too. Good advice in here.. It is your choice, direct or wide sprayed.
Rockingout
Thanks for the comments. Looks like I will be doing a direct firing speaker, most likely the Rb-61 or the 81. Thanks!!

InVeNtOr
if you want a pair of rb-61's i may sell them along with some "invisable" brackets. send me a pm if interested. since you are more than 4' from the back was i would strongly suggest rb series first. tommyboy
THX recommends using "dispersive" speakers as sides, and bookshelf, or direct firing speakers in the rear. I had a 7.1 system for a liittle while, and it sounded great set up like this. I had B2 rears....... http://www.thx.com/home/setup/speakers/71.html
j-malotky
The THX specs for wide is ONLY a band aid for systems that need to work in adverse conditions. If you have a rectangular room or can have all 4 rears in the same relitive proportions it is always better to go direct. JM
j-malotky
I would not follow that THX room layout either. I can't see putting both rears next to each other on the back wall. I would suggest you follow the DTS layout having your sides 90 and your rears on 45. http://www.dts.com/Support/~/media/CFD1137CD6174A3F959CF16C5DB3F924.ashx JM
Rockingout
Jm, The DTS layout is what I would do in my situation as I have a door in middle of the rear wall so the rears would have to be spaced apart like the diagram shows. Thanks!
