Klipsch RF-82 as front and back speakers

Welcome to the forums Marcel!

I've enjoyed having floorstanding speakers as surrounds. Gives a very full sound. The RF-82s are very, very nice. The RC-62 center speaker will match very, very well. The RC-64 would be a large upgrade over the RC-62 but I believe the RC-62 is better matched to the RF-82s.

If in the future you ever would decide to upgrade you could go with either RF-63 or RF-83 fronts and then you can use your RF-82s for side and rear surrounds.

For HT you always need a sub. Some of the folks here like the 12" - 15" Klipsch jobs. Others go a bit more heavy duty from sub specialists - SVS, JL Audio, Velodyne, etc. Depends on how demanding you are. If you want genuine sub 20Hz that shakes the pictures off the walls then go for a big boy from the specialist manufacturers.

All comes down to your budget.

Welcome to the forums. The RF-82's are great speakers as mentioned. I would definitely get a sub. I use a sub for 2ch and for HT, even though my RF-83's provide plenty O' bass. Good luck in your quest and feel free to ask all the questions you want.

Hi wuzzzer,

Do you think with the 4 RF-82's and the RC-62 center speaker I would als need a Subwoofer, and if so which one would you reccommend?

Marcel K

A subwoofer isn't a need, but they are nice to have. If you want to stay with Klipsch the Sub-12 is an excellent choice under $500.

I use towers for surrounds tooBig Smile

I concur...you definitely need a sub especially for movies.....

I watched the new Star Trek on Blu-Ray yesterday without my subwoofer. Let me tell you, a properly set up pair of capable front main speakers do not need a subwoofer. I was very, very impressed.

(Thanks to my cat chewing through my subwoofer interconnect my subwoofer is out of commission until I order a new cable. [:@] )

I use towers for my surrounds as well. It is WAYYY overkill for the size of my room, but I listen to alot of music Blu-Rays and SACD's and like the sound of 4 Klipsch towers in my system. Like the old saying in the car world goes " theres' no substitute for cubic inches".

I went to the store today (I'm dutch) and to my dissapointment it appears that the height of the RC-62 is to high.

The RC-52 will fit but............. will it be good enough!
The store just keeps saying "hoeveel wil je genieten" wich means much do I want to enjoy the sound!
Is there some else who want to give me some advice?

I hate to say it but I heard the RC-52 with the RF-82's and I felt that it could not keep up with the RF-82's. Unfortunately, sometimes you've gotta settle if you have space constraints or you will have to make other adjustments to accomodate the larger RC-62.

out of curiosity, why do you want to run a second set of rf82's as the rears for your HT

I'd get cheaper rears (rs series or rb), and up the fronts to the RF83's with the money saved

consider
that the rears in movies need very little clarity and are there more
for ambient noise and effect, and you'd see it's a waste of money...there's nothing 'wrong' with it, it's just there's a better option for ya

I'd say get a better center, but you've got that covered

just my 2 cents

i currently use the same system you are refering to, RF-82's front and rearm at first i was using a rc-52 but as stated before it just couldn't keep up, i upgraded to a rc-62 and it made a big difference. I also have the rw-12d plenty of bass there for whatever your needs are. [H]

I run floorstanders for side surrounds, it definitely gives a different sense than the wide dispersion type speakers.

I've read that floorstanders can be distracting, but for me I think it adds a little extra to the panning and surround sound experience.

if you listen to alot of multi channel music the floorstanders are also better suited.

Like I said, I'm not really an expert and after hours of reading the forums about the Klipsch RF-82 and RF-83 I still don't know what the best choice is.
If I go for the RF-83's (really huge) I'll need the RC-64 which means a lot more money to pay. Also the subwoofer costs much more!

I've already had two small systems which didn't do the job for me. So now I want something that sounds much better!

I've found space for a RC-62 or RC-64 but know the rest. In the forum I can´t really find an answer which would be the best choice.
I´ve already been to the dealer (three times) and I here a difference in favour of the RF-83's, but is it enough???

Íf I were to choose between the setups advised by Klipsch the RF-83 setup would cost me about 2500 Euro's more than the RF-82 setup.

Am I going to hear 2500 Euro differece?

I think you have to answer that question yourself. My only concern is that you said, "I've already had two small systems which didn't do the job for me. So now I want something that sounds much better!" There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that if you went with the RF-83 that you would sit back and say, "Man, I wish I would have ponied up for the ___________ speakers instead." They are truly a fantastic speaker. You could definitely get away with not having a sub for awhile until you can get one.

And to say that you have to spend a lot more on a sub isn't necessarily true unless you are only considering buying it new. I picked up my Velodyne HGS15 sub (15" with 1250 watt amp) for $200 on CL. Deals are out there everywhere in the used market. Definitely don't be afraid to go that route. All but my Projector and Screen are used equipment, even my seating and they have all worked flawlessly.

The RF-82's are great speakers but I just don't think they are near the caliber of the RF-83 and the RC-64 is in a different league altogether than the RC-62.

So here is my final thought. If you want a great system (probably better than 99% of your friends, family and the people you know), go with the RF-82 system. If you want a system that you will never "need" to upgrade and can handle as much power as you can throw out at them, I believe the RF-83 system will blow your socks off (literally).

Whatever you decide, let your ears and your budget be your guide. To me, it is better to buy what you really want and what would really satisfy you instead of "settlling" (as you have done before). You'll regret it. If the RF-82 is what you want and need, then go for it! If you are having doubts now, my guess is you will always wonder, "what if". Even if you can't buy it all at one time, it will be totally worth saving for the RF-83. I had my RF-83's for awhile before I could save up for the RC-64 (no regrets) and used a lower end sub until I found a smokin deal on a sub that could hang with the RF-83's (no regrets there either).

Ok, I'm done. LOL. Good luck in whatever you decide.
