Radar Detectors - stop light cameras and Beltronics,Cobra,Escort,Wizzer,Val...

Personally, I think the V1 is the ugliest detector ever made! You can't even conceal it - it's like - hey I am a detector, look [:|].

Come to think of it, it does not really matter whether Escort or Valentine. If you reach your destination safely, that's all it matters. With an Escort (pun intended), I have never been chased.

I'll chime in as someone who has a decent amount of experience with radar detectors. I currently have an Escort 8500 X50 and love it. Never had a ticket in the six years that I have owned it. Before that I used to have a Bel 855Sti I think it was called for about eight years. Not nearly as good as the Escort, but still saved my hind many of times. One of my best friends has a V1 and yet again has never had a ticket with it. We both drive fast on a regular basis. My story and parting line is "Don't cheap out when buying a radar detector". All the higher end detectors such as V1, Escort 8500/9500 ect.. will significantly decrease your chances of getting a ticket. Each brand has there pluses and minuses, but all the higher end detectors will perform much better than the $69 Wal-Mart radar detector of the week. I not try to put down anyone who has a lower end detector, but saying from my experience and some friends, the top tier detectors will perform much better. Also you have to know how to properly use the detector now matter how expensive or cheap it is. I have had friends buy the latest detector and get a ticket a week later and then ***** about how crappy the detector was. When in fact they didn't know anything about radar vs. laser, constant vs. instant on radar, detector range on hills vs. curves. You get my point. So if you speed, buy a good detector, learn to use it properly and you will probably cut your ticket chances by 75% or more.

Reminds me of a story. Driving home one day from work in the 1979 Vette with four Mohawk studded snow tires on the Ohio Turnpike which was snow/slush covered, noticed at about 50mph that a rooster tail of shluck was being raised by my vehicle. It looked kind of kool so I took it up to 80mph and the rooster tail was huge and looked really awsome. Then there was a red light behind me clocking me at 79mph (uphill) so I pulled over and the "statee" was real nice and wrote me a real nice ticket. Radar detector no good when being clocked and leaving huge rooster tail of shluck.

I have more stories.

I'm curious..... Why even bother to "speed"? Sort of a fundamental philosophical question I suppose.... Have I ever "speeded"? Yes.... When I was younger and it was just sheer fun or I wanted to get from A to B in a hurry.... Was I ever caught? Nope, just really lucky I guess....

Here's how the consequences of getting speeding tickets were explained to me by my insurance company. First ticket? Oh well, doo doo happens, but we're watching you... Second ticket within 36 months? Count on a rate increase.... Third ticket within 36 months? Rate increase and we just might cancel your insurance....

Now that I'm an "old person", and I pretty much took their advice and knocked off speeding in about 1972... the result is that I have full coverage (collision, stacked UM, the works) on a F250 and a F150 and it costs me $112 a month..... for both....

Back in the day when I was on active duty in Europe (except for mil schools, pretty much never was in the US from 1969 through 1984).... getting speeding tickets could cost you your your driver's license and could cost you your security clearance. Reason? If one is irresponsible enough to speed, then maybe one is not trustworthy for other things... You could also be punished by the military for civilian offenses, including speeding... No win situation...

Subsequent to my return and then in a new career..... law enforcement.... the "boss" as in the man who pays the paycheck made it very clear back then and it still applies today: "Don't get a speeding ticket. If you do, you may be suspended without pay. We cannot ask our employees to enforce the laws when they are out there breaking the same laws". In Florida right now, if you have an accident and you were speeding, it will likely be considered that you were at fault, at least from a civil standpoint. Which means after the inevitable lawsuits are over with, you will lose your insurance.

Just a thought, and please don't anyone take it the wrong way. Love speed? Have at it and best of luck with detectors, skill and luck!! As you pass by me, just wave!! I'll wave back as I pass by you on the side of the road with the traffic "man"!! LOLOL!!!

PS. Watch out for laser guns... You might wish to look at this.... It discusses the new "hotness" in catching speeders..... While it talks about avoiding laser detection, the next generation lasers will generally overcome most, if not all countermeasures.

Don't forget, if you get caught in Virginia with any detection device.... it's a $300 fine and they seize the device... permanently....

If you ran the speed limit here you would flipped off- shot at-spit on- beer bottled- rear ended and ran off the road- city or interstate. Roads are full of wild @ss idiots- too many for the cops to arrest- so the cops just set up their little honey holes wher the speed limit drops suddenly and write all the tickets that they want and pretty much ignore the rest.

that does not make it right or wrong- is what it is.

Typically everybody runs 15 over except for school zones areas and known traffic cop honey holes. I ger ka banded all the time-( instant on used by the city cops and HP). They dont seem to bother me at 80 in the 65 on the interstate. There are plenty of 95-100 mph fish to fry. If my detector goes off I make sure that I am at 15+ or less depending on tailgating traffic and the time factor. I love fast cars but I try to stay out of fast packs of traffic and away from everybody in general when ever I can. I would say that I am much safer than slow drivers in fast traffic or cell phone idiots at any speed. The trick is to find the sharp lawyer who can make tickets go away for a few hundred extra bucks. Most towns have a couple. It has been 4 years since I have had to use mine. A detector is a sure ticket to jail if someone thinks that it is a foolproof device as previously stated. buit I will say that the Escort has saved my bacon on mamy occasions while traveling in unfamiliar areas

Of course 90% of my daily driving is in a "marked" vehicle (a big Dodge diesel pick-up truck!!!).... No-one ever passes me! Huhm? maybe I'm on to something here! LOL! It is, however, funny to watch as the BMW doing 90 approaches and goes nuts trying to slow down as they pass me. Even funnier is to put on the brake lights and watch folks pull over and wait for you to turn around cause they truly believe that you are going to go visit with them... And I just keep going.... The joys and pleasures abound!!!
