jcmusic
I am interested in going to a direct bass bin type and use the khorn tophats, and staying three way. Has anyone tried different bass bins??? Jay

moray james
You might want to look into a set of PPSL bass cabinets. PPSL stands for push pull slot loaded. That ought to be less overall volume compared to a Khorn. DJK on this forum has experience with this cabinet design. There was also a thread on this at diyaudio. Good luck, regards Moray James. Rudy81
I have been very happy with my build of JC's DBB. So much so, that I sold my Khorns. I'm curious as to why you want to stay with the Khorn top section. Judging by the great interest in 2" horns and drivers it seem more folks are moving away from the stock Khorn top section for other options. DizRotus
I doubt it was a typo. I believe Maron is indicating it's his opinion the Khorn bass bin is not the weakest part of a Khorn. He can let us know otherwise. In any case, I would replace the K400 first, the K77 second and worry about the bass bin last.

Hi Rudy,I already have 2" drivers and 2" horns, I thought you knew that. Jay

I replaced both the 400 and the 77's along time ago!!! Now have 2" drivers and horns. Jay
Rudy81
Jay, I knew about the 2" horns, but when you mentioned Khorn 'tophat', I didn't know if you were talking stock or not. The Khorn bass bin is certainly not the weakest part, at least if the back is properly sealed. However, in my case I longed for more of that direct 'chest thumping' slam rather than that 'all around - room filling' bass my Khorns were producing. For me, the DBB was the way to go....at least for the time being. You know how this hobby is....the constant pursuit of perceived perfection. The absolute biggest benefit I got from going with the DBB was the new placement of the main speakers. They are now quite a bit away from the front and side walls and are giving me some outstanding imaging and sound stage. Much better than I was ever able to achieve with my Khorns eventhough I had false corners on them and had them toed in and a foot or so away from the walls. There are certainly plenty of bass bins that you can use in your system. I would start by looking at how you wish to set your crossover and then find a bass bin that will fit your top section. I have experimented quite a bit with my DBB and actually have them crossed higher than I need to, but like the overall sound between the top 2" driver (K69, P-Audio branded) and the bass bin. I recently went 3-way myself, but not in the conventional manner. I added an RSW-15 to each channel to pick up from 20Hz-50Hz. I now have a nicely balanced set of mains that put out as much bass as your heart desires.
mark1101
I would consider enclosing the backs of the Khorn bins instead of replacing them. It makes them a whole new bass bin after that. The only thing I know of that is cleaner sounding with less distortion in that footprint is the Jubilee right now.

DizRotus
I agree with Tom and Mark. I enclosed the backs of 4 Speakerlab SKhorns in 1975 (used in DJ biz). It was a signifcant improvement. Beyond that, I'd go with Jubilee bass bins.
jcmusic
OK about closing in the backs, which way would be the best way to close in the back??? I have seen more than one way is one way better than another??? Jay
Rudy81
Jay: If I were going to close in the backs, which I would definately do, I would subscribe to Greg's method. You can see what he did here: http://www.voltiaudio.com/flkhorn.shtml and I think this will get you very close to what the Anniversary edition Khorns look like. Of course, you can always go the Jubilee route! ;-)
