Glad you aren't going to the Imperial Palace after all.

It was almost comical, having worked all day, driven almost 8 hours to Minneapolis, sleeping for a couple hours, heading to the airport early morning before daylight, then 3 hour flight, no breakfast, no lunch other than a few snacks on the plane, then get to the room and it was a what the heck moment?!?! Call front desk, meet with housekeeper for the floor, shown another room, same or worse shape.... again and again. By the time I got to have a bite to eat, I was getting pretty cranky.

I really hate a dirty room! So IP has been canceled, we are now gonna stay at the RIO.

Schu, Thanks for the offer, will keep you posted. Thanks

I think that the Rio is all suites, or at least it used to be all suites.

Just across the street from the Rio is the Gold Coat. For $15 each you can get a good prime rib in a really nice restaurant. The Cortez Room. They moved it from an old room that was built in the 70's or 80's into a really nice spot that has some beautiful tenant improvements from the previous tenant's gourmet room. Make sure you make reservations.

The all american bar and grill at the Rio is a good steakhouse, but it will set you back at least $100. I have never had a bad meal at the Rio.

But check out the Cortez at the Gold Coast. The Palms (really close to the Rio) has a really good steakhouse called 9. It is a little over the top "LA" style restaurant, but the filet will melt in your mouth. It is pricy though.

Rio's okay... a step up from the IP fo sho.

I play quite a bit of poker at the rio during the wsop this last month, and you will be happy unless you are used to upper scale casinos... which the rio is not(but still nice). the strip will be about 2-3 minutes away by car(10-15 walking) and you can always catch the free shuttle service.

if you are looking at the cheap end and nice, take a look at the Orleans. if you are out here doing the hiking thing, take time in red rock canyon.

if you need to know anything about poker or such things let me know.

Hmmm, Mow I'm wondering if I should switch from the Rio to the Orleans, Price is just about the same, less than $20 diff for the whole 3 days. I did book a single nite at the Orleans for when we arrive. We will stay 1 night Monday the 3rd then on Tuesday we will get supplies, food and stuff and head over to the south rim.

I have not been there in a while, but the Rio is MUCH NICER than the Orleans. The Rio was opened as a more upscale hotel (though not in the same league as Caesars and the Mirage - the high end at the time, the Orleans was more of a neighborhood dump). Unless they have really went downhill, stay at the Rio.

the orleans and rio are pretty much second tier casinos... the rio is in the news because of the WSOP tournament, but the Orleans is a great place...if you are looking to save move, it's the place to stay. the orleans will have much higher foot traffic and be much more energetic than the rio and the orleans has great shows and conventions, specially conservative slanted conventions. Rio does have one of the better buffets, but that's not enough for me to stay there... I an jump in a car or catch the free shuttle from orleans if I want.

Unless you are wanting to stay at a top tier casino(aria, wynn etc), these places are fine... clean... and well staffed.

We went to LV over Labor Day and had a great time. we saw 3 Cirque shows, including Ka, and the show at the Wynn, LaReve, which is as good as most Cirque shows. We also took a Pink Jeep tour to Hoover Dam, which we really liked (the tour and the Dam). We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental which is very very lux. No coffee in the rooms and room service or minibar prices are fuggedataboutit. No casino which was fine since we don't gamble.

Some lessons learned:

1. It is not a dry heat, at least not on the Strip. Stay hydrated.

2. Be prepared to walk long distances in the heat, or take cabs. Don't even think of driving on the Strip.

3. You don't have to take fliers for call girls from the people on the street (unless you want to [:P].

4. The dancing fountain at the Bellagio is the best free show on the Strip.

5. There are cheaper places to eat, you just have to search them out. Buy snacks and drinks at a drugstore.
