What was once a hobby...

...is now an obsession. It all started out so innocently. A pair of KG5.5's at a pawn shop. Wow, these sound good. Then came a pair of KLF30's. Can't sound any better then that. Or could it? Then a pair of KSP400's. Sounds great, although I preferred the 30's, so I took them back. Then a pair of '87 Cornwall II's. By this time my friends think I have a problem. Then I found a pair of Herseys. They sure sound good for a little box. Refinished them and they look pretty darn good. I did fail to mention the 3 KLF-C7's (I kept 2 sold 1) in there as well as some Cornwall II's I picked up for a friend. But I digress. Then there were some KG4's in the paper for $100. Gotta have 'em cause they are pristine. Now the latest purchase is a pair of LaScala's. The tops need refinishing but the sides can hold their own. Now I think I have a problem. I would like to start a group like AA but use the word audioholic instead of alcohol. Shoot, if I were a drinker I wouldn't be so broke. I think I conquered the first step in admitting I have a problem.

For me, it was finally getting the Cornwalls off of this board which started the host of improvements. I had a cheapo Pioneer rack amp with a pair of refurbished Peavey stacks for 10 years. Now I have speakers that will really show the quality of the electronics, which of course, means upgrades.

The good news for me is that once I settle on gear, it's here to stay for some time - I only do this every 8-10 years or so. The HT won't be seeing major changes anytime soon (aside from a single Belle as a center when the right deal is found) - it's taking the form that I hoped it would.

If you have a specific goal in mind - that is a specific reason to buy the gear, it's OK. Buying gear just to have them is more of a concern. I chose gear that I need specifically for my setup - that serves a specific purpose. I do my homework, then lie in wait for a deal. This forum has been excellent in assisting me to make educated choices. I've only purchaed one item at "list" - the Outlaw 750. Everything else is used or closeouts, purchased at deep discounts vs. new.

I've always been a music addict, so I don't expect my addiction to good audio to subside anytime soonSmile.gif

ooops mis-quote by me. How could I forget the Doobie Brothers - the Lords of the 8 track tape?

BTW- anyone want to buy a pair of cats? I need to come up with some cash before my credit card bills arrive...Well, heading off to the casinos, maybe I can make the nickle slots come through for me. On the other hand, maybe I'll have better luck if I hang out at the toll plaza and try to catch quarters.

That would be all I need to do. Go gambling. Here on the left coast of FL, you have to take a trip on a boat to do any of that. I get seasick (ex-Navy) easily so that leaves me out of that. Well at least to play the good games like Blackjack. We do have Indian Casino's here, but they only have the slots. Then there is the dog track, but I think there are to many variables there. Famous track too as it was in the remake of Oceans 11.

Dnd- I do have a goal in mind, but then deals come along and the goal becomes modified. Right now, my home theater is set with Corns as mains, KG4's as surrounds, C7 in the middle powered by a Parasound 2205AT and an incoming Outlaw 950 (Yamaha 2095 right now doing the processing). I will be working on a 2 channel set-up to go around the LaScala's and getting some advice on tubes from Mike L and others. Selling the KLF's hopefully soon. The KG's are gone to a friend. Herseys are in the bedroom. So you can still move around in the house but there are a couple of sets of speakers I need to sell. Anyone want to buy some Logans?

What were once vices...are now habits ? I don't worry about it. I do say this once in a while "send money, guns and lawyers" Warren Zevon Ha haaaaaaaa.

Anyway speaking of the Doobie Brothers and after reading Robs post about center speakers(most excellent M_Hawk) I wanted to mention that I think the DVD-A version of The Captain and Me sounds pretty good.I have an RC-7 for center. That thing is a hefty 44 pounds.Almost 20 more than my RS-7's I was using.I have it biamped so I think the few DVD-A discs that I have really shine. On another note(no pun intended),I was going to tell a toll booth story after Cluless mentioned taking a little trip to Frantic City but I thought twice about it since any memories of the Jersey Pike or Garden State ParkYourCar might send me on another trip to the medicine cabinet.Toll booths? I don't need no stinkin' toll booths. But my taking trips without leaving the farm are well known.cwm4.gif And for all you kiddies out there I'm just joking.cwm5.gif

Here's another one... The Smoker you Drink, the Player you Get.

Hey Mike,

Congratulations on the La Scala's! I'm sorry about not replying to your Email but I was pretty busy this weekend. I'm real glad you got them and I think you will be too. I have only listened to mine a couple of hours but I was very impressed with what I was hearing. Q-Man is pretty much done refinishing the cabinets (see other thread) and is awaiting the lacquer to arrive so that he can spray them. I'm envious that you are capable of refinishing them yourself.

I hope that you can make it over to the East Coast in a couple of weeks to hear mine, as well as participate in the AL/ALK comparison. We can talk more about the tubes after you have had a chance to get familiar with the way they sound now...

Joe Walsh. Wasn't he famous for being on Drew Carey?

How 'bout "You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish". Of course that was before they got sappy.

Mike, I am listening to Waiting for Columbus remastered right now. They do sound awe inspiring. I think the sound is fuller than the CW's. When listening to the CW's, you know where the sound is coming from. With the LS's, the soundstage isn't just L/R. It extends to the corners of the room and meets somewhere in the middle. It's gotta be because of the huge squaker. As far as condition, my LS's just need the tops refinished. The sides are good. I hope there isn't too much damage on top that sanding and steel wool won't rub out. I'm not a super handy man, but that Formby's makes refinishing easy. I also purchased an orbital sander so I don't have to sweat so much. I will let you know how it goes.

Before you start, talk to Q-Man. If you could send him some pictures, that would probably help as well. My tops were beat to death (some pretty big gouges) and the sides just had some minor veneer chips. BTW, what did you get 'em for?

As for the crossovers, yours have the more desirable AA's and mine (86's) have the less desirable AL's. It would be nice to hear them side-by side one day and see if we can pick out the differences. I was still very impressed with mine regardless of what others have said here...

Mike, These are just a little bit heavier than the KLF's I brought over. Don't know how much use my 12 y/o would be helping me wrangle them into the truck. I paid $800 for them.(I bet the set of Belles on e-bay now will go for the same if you get to them early enough and haggle!) The only problem with the tops is the damn plant women put on the speakers to make them more attractive. A little water and a couple scratches. I may have to replace the veneer, but Formby's varnish remover and an orbital sander will confirm this. It also appears that they set the speakers down on the carpet after getting the carpet cleaned. Looks like a mildew stain but I removed the bottoms and it didn't leak through and the wood isn't warped. Cleaned the wood and everything is back in place now, 'cept my back from moving them.

Ken- My gambling 'till I'm blue in the face would mean I'm about to hurl. I can play the lottery all day long and not feel the rush you get when you get blackjack. Damn those endorphins.

Tom,

I think he was aware of that. He mentioned they did that beofre they got sappy and I agree. BTW, I saw REO in 1976 as the leadoff band for Aerosmith and they blew those drug-addicts right off the stage. Smile.gif

If you want to hear one of the greatest double live albums of all time, check out REO's "You Get What You Play For". This album kicks a$$! I think Gary Rickrath is one of the most underappreciated guitarists of all time...

Mike-

Yea, I agree with ya. I was really starting to like the "High Infidelity" album till "Keep on Lovin' You" came on. But it did help for a brief make-out session with a cute blond girl I knew back when I was skateboarding Pro-Am tourniescwm1.gif in the late seventies. Ahh, to be 15 again.
