Porn_Star Posted August 26, 2014 Share Posted August 26, 2014 (edited) so i know this is better off suited in the avsforum, while there are more opinions and what not there. i wanted to start here as this is a much smaller forum and i can take the opinions and recomendations slower and research them individually without feeling overwhelmed with responses. i am very new to the home theater area and what not. i know i want an AT screen. thinking about using my dual lascalas for left and right, and adding a third for the center as they are still sitting in the garage just chilling. i would like to be 4k ready, but that seems very expensive compared to my 4k tv. i got my samsung 65 4k 9000 series 4k tv for just a little over 2000 bucks, and i was thinking a projector would be cheaper, but boy was i wrong!! i want to build a false wall, make the screen as large as i can, trio lascalas, most likely 2 or 4 18 si d4s, and i am thinking about using 3 inuke 6000dsp amps for all this. i would like to stick with another harman avr3700, ps3, htpc, rs62ii X4, i have a friend who paints, so i will most likely get him to make me some sort of acoustic panels that double as artwork. pictures will be posted of the room. (most likely tack them to the wall under the existing curtains) id like to put the screen on the wall with the single window. (i will probably double tint this glass and make sure no light gets through maybe even add some insulation to keep the heat down as well) i really like youthmans seating arrangment so i figured i would copy it for the most part. i want to maximize the screen size so i was thinking about 120 inches? i like the idea of a roll up screen and was wondering what was wrong with them as no one seems to use them from what i have seen. what software have you all been using to make plans from?? excuse the mess, i am currently rebuilding my soon to be bedroom setup as we speak. If you want a big screen use the long wall for the speaker and screen. Some of the other guys can help with screen type and projectors. Some of the other guys can help with screen type and projectors. i cant sit far enough away from it then. false wall will take up at least 2.5 feet of room. then i can only sit 8 to 10 feet away from a 10 foot screen. i think that would be uncomfortable. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The room dimension are a little tight for the LaSacalas, sub, and other gear. The short wall gives you more length but 12 ft is a little cramped for all the gear and speakers. We have to work with what we have, lol. Some of these theater guys will be here to help but, deep blue is a nice color. Look at refence_heads room. I found that the LaScalas make incredible HT speakers (actually was very surprised as I always thought Heritage speakers were mainly for 2ch). i want to build a false wall, make the screen as large as i can, trio lascalas, That's exactly the direction I am going. Three LaScalas behind a 150" Seymour AT Screen. If 150" seems too big, I can mask it down to 140". Piece Size: 146.0" x 66.7"14' x 98" = $307.30Shipping $35 I chose not to have them "Precision Cut" the fabric as we can easily do that when we fasten the screen to the DIY Frame. i was thinking a projector would be cheaper, but boy was i wrong!! The projector is much cheaper when you get to the larger sizes. Try buying a 150" TV for $2500. If you want a true HT experience, you can't beat the big screen of a projection. It's incredibly immersive which you cannot get with a 60" screen. i have a friend who paints, so i will most likely get him to make me some sort of acoustic panels that double as artwork. pictures will be posted of the room. That's a great idea. If you are even somewhat handy, you can make DIY panels for a fraction of the cost. Adding artwork to it will be sweet! I would recommend 2" Owen Corning 703 for the insulation. Most in the AVS Forums recommend it. Adding panels to my room made a HUGE difference. I used to think it was snake oil but I had sooooo many reflections, it was horrendous on the sound. I have a long narrow window on one long wall that we totally blacked out using plywood and covering it in fabric. Zero light comes through. I can tell you this alone made a HUGE difference in the overall experience and helped greatly during daytime viewing. My Panasonic is not a super bright projector but looks incredible in a light controlled room. I still have to black out the double sliding glass door on the opposite wall but since it leads to a lanai, there isn't any direct sunlight but still enough comes through to dim the image during daylight viewing. i want to maximize the screen size so i was thinking about 120 inches? Cleaner look plus you can get a much larger screen for less than that. My current 103" screen is an Elite and I've been very pleased with it. what is a good guideline with brightness, The Seymour I chose is 1.2 gain. what color should i paint the room? That is a matter of pure preference but whatever color you choose, go with a dark color. My room is a dark burgundy (sometimes looks fire engine red in my photos lol). When the lights go down, the walls disappear. I also painted my ceiling black which really helps to make the room appear even larger than it is. If you want a big screen use the long wall for the speaker and screen. I would not recommend that as it puts you too close to the screen and even though you have a larger wall to work with, you will limit the size you can go with due to your seating distance. Plus this will prevent you from having two rows if you choose. My room is 13' deep and the max size the width will acoomodate is a 150" screen. I think that will suffice. MichaelandKlipsch Posted August 26, 2014 Share Posted August 26, 2014 I was about to say Youthmans equipment is very similar to what you are trying to do. The 3 Lascalas will sound exceptional for Home theater as I have heard Mikes and feel they are some of the best I have heard. I think equipment wise you have selected some nice choices. The Inuke 6000’s have more than enough power for what you need. The big screen is by far the most impactful piece in the theater even to us audio enthusiasts it can’t be beat. With 3 lascalas I wouldn’t go smaller than 130” if you can help it but the projector is probably the easier component to upgrade and swap out for its size. Tv’s are a pain to sell move etc. but the projector can be boxed and shipped easily and I wouldn’t personally go with a 4k projector until they have several that have been out and gotten the kinks worked out. The JVC’s eshift works nicely for 4k but of course native 4k is still not there yet with actual content for the most part. Out of the projectors I have tested or seen in person, Benq, Panasonic, JVC, Sim2, Sony etc. the Sim2 cannot and will not be beat but that is an entirely different price point and not necessary unless you have an enormous screen over 200”. The JVC offers IMO the most cinematic and best overall picture but in the room I see you have to work with it probably won’t be the best bet and a panny will probably fit the bill. JVC’s definitely offers the deepest blacks and best 2d picture quality IMO but they require a dedicated room that is completely light controlled. Your off to a good start and it should be a fun project. The only time I have heard the Harmon Kardon with klipsch speakers is with Mike’s 3 Lascalas and I was very impressed with the sound of movie playback. akdave Posted August 26, 2014 Share Posted August 26, 2014 Side note - depending on which projector you use and which wall you set your screen up on, just double check the throw distance recommendations on your projector of choice so you don't end up with a bad surprise if it can't make the image size you want from the distance you want. I didn't want to have grey bars on top and bottom of my screen. Certain movies are in 16:9 so I chose a projector that could switch between those two formats without having to manually zoom and refocus when switching between formats. Basically, you zoom the projector in until the grey bars spill just above and below the screen. I love the 2.35:1 aspect. My panny projector has 3 "Zoom Memory" presets that you can setup and save a preset for. I have one for 16:9 and one for 2.35:1. The BenQ you are looking at is fully manual with no lens shift. Might not be an issue if you just want to have 16:9 and you can position your projector in the right location. I have one and was able to give it a finished look. So it can be done. It is nice to hit a button and have a full view of everything. Plus working on things is easy. You also won't have to build a false wall (like a fixed AT screen would). Still with all that said fixed would be a great way to go in most cases. Projectors can be affordable. But also really spendy. 4k would be a ton of cash right now. Buying a projector is a lot like buying a home. Some do this and others do that. You first need to know your screen aspect and size. Then the room condition. And finally what will you use it for 2d, 3d, day time lights on or only 2d in the dark. Unless you have a huge wallet you most likely won't get all of those things in one projector. Getting the room painted should be first but after that you can work on the room after you get everything going. Color is up to you. I have a room that is 12' wide also and really long. I fit a 125" 2.35 screen np on it. Short wall is the way to go. Your speakers are going to be behind the screen anyway. So if you have a 10 11ft screen you wouldn't use any more space then that anyway. My advise is don't try and do too much at one time.
