kenratboy
Actually, I have heard of it, and I know more is better, but what is it? Is it the amps ability to provide power during a transient? What about numbers? What is a good amount to have? ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. Mighty Favog
At my best understanding (read: I may a total idiot) it is the amount of power drain during a transient. Or until the capasitors are totally drained. Given this, a 2db to 5db would be plenty (max)headroom. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 09-22-2002 at 08:55 PM
Malcolm
Dynamic headroom is simply the amount of additional power an amplifier can deliver above its rated continuous power output for a short time. So if an amplifier has a 100 W RMS rating with 3 dB dynamic headroom, it can produce 200 W for a short time. You don't need any dynamic headroom if your amp if large enough to start with. I remember Max Headroom...
John Warren
here's how to get it headroom is the reason why this amp weighs 160lbs. This message has been edited by John Warren on 09-21-2002 at 05:27 PM
TheEAR
A good quality amplifier will have at least 3dB of dynamic headroom. Most however have less,a few have more. And some have so much power they never operate even at half the RMS value on very short peaks! McIntosh 600W per channel amp, good little amp. Krell FPB600,better,bigger and more powerful amp. 600/1200/2400W RMS into 8/4/2Ohms..per channel.Dynamic headroom...who needs it with the FPB line?LOL Even with the "tiny" ATI 1505 you have power to spare with RF-7's as mains and sourrounds. LOL And with the 2505 you enter the heavy hitter club. prodj101
yeah, I got a mcintosh amp and intstantly noticed the difference. you can tell if an amp will have decent headroom if when you turn it off, the music keeps playing for about 15 seconds. Thats a sin of big capacitors. ------------------ New music system: 2.1 using SF-2's (soon to be RF-7's), and an RSW-15. for amplification Mcintosh MC02105, B&K PT-3 preamp, Sony SACD player. pioneer turntable. lynnm
Cluless When my girlfreind and I got dynamic in my old VW we usually wished for a little more legroom. We were both too shy and clueless to worry overmuch about headroom. That whole headroom thing seemed a tad gross at the time! That GF has been my wife for almost 40 years and will still go out watching the submarine races with me any time we visit our old home town. I am one lucky guy! Personal note: Inside Joke - Yep! Hepenstall's is still the best place in the world to watch the submarine races! kenratboy
lynnm: Whoa! Let's keep this thread rated PG!!! Hey, I wonder if I could make a 1000000u capacitor out of a 55 gallon drum, 10 boxes of Renolds Wrap, and a case of 10W-30? I could charge it up and let it play for a few hours!!! ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. fini
We're planning on turning one of the kid's bedrooms into a dynamic headroom when they move out. fini
BBB
Well fini, by the time most kids reach the age to move out on their own they will have probably turned their bedrooms into their own private dynamic headrooms. Sometimes becoming the size an entire state like Idaho. ------------------ tHe wORLDs werst TYPesT>
