Mallette
Bob Lemker will host the DFW Hornheads 23 February. We are expecting to experience his ALK lauded Cornwall mods, as well as try to help Mike Walters determine just what it is that he has doen to his that makes them sound so much like K'horns. Of course, the MBS-3 will be there to try to educate CD freaks about high res, and LP freaks about keeping 'em safely in their jackets except for the most critical listening. Should be fun. If you are in the DFW area and not on the mailing list for the group, let me know. Dave
Deang
Interesting. So, what constitutes a DFW area? And of course, you must come back and report to us what have been done to those Cornwalls!
jt1stcav
Wish I was in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex right now (lived in Grand Prairie a short time, and at Ft. Hood for 2 years). Would love to hear how these modified Cornwalls sound almost like Klipschorns!
Chris Robinson
JT, I just looked at your handle ... Were/are you in the First Cavalry?
Mallette
JT-Love that VU meter anim! Is it real time? :-> I can almost hear the music from your listening room... Dave
kjohnsonhp
Dave, As a Cornwall owner I look forward to it! I regret missing the last meeting. It would be fun to compare my updated but stock circuit ST70 to your Van Altine mod. some day. Is that thing up yet? I'm putting in my request for a pass.... -kj Flower Mound
Mallette
Ken: No, the amp isn't back up yet. Spike said he'd take a look at it at the meet and tell me just what I've done. Perhaps he can fix it on the spot? One can hope... ;-> Since the tubes all light, I suppose an output transformer could be the culprit. Lord, I hope not. dbflash
Please do report. I finally got my new tweeters hooked up in my cornwalls friday night. i have been listening to them since. I know that they do not sound anything like my Lascala's. I would like to know what mods were done to make them sound like khorn's. Mallette
Let me clarify what my admittedly less-than-MH (or almost any audiophile) ears heard. It was the tight, present, controlled and well-balanced bass that differed from mine and other Cornwall's I've heard. I'll leave it to others to comment on the mid and treble. Probably need to get Mike Walters and Bob in hear for this. I'll send them a note later... Dave
dbflash
Mallet, I hope I didn't come off sounding like a jerk. I am interested in the mods. I ordered a pair of ALK xovers yesterday. I liked them so much in my lascala's. i am going to add new binding post's. i want to rewire them, but i'm not sure about what wire to use yet. i just hooked up a pair of nordust red dawn ic's between my cd player and preamp. i did that tuesday night. i have only played about 6 cd's since the install so they have along way to go (about 200 hours) before breaking in. as of this morning i really like the cornwalls. They do sound different then my lascala's, but i'm starting to get use to the cornwalls. I wish i could attend the meeting. i spent 6 weeks at the Marriot by the airport. i was attending a training class (Rolm). Danny
Mallette
DBFLASH: As you may have noticed, I don't much take the bait. However, I don't even know what you are talking about here. You sounded fine to me... Anyway, I CAN tell you that one of Mike's mods was to replace the leads from the xover to woofer with pure silver wire. About 12.00 worth, I think he said. However, he did another thing or two at the same time and isn't sure whether it is all of the above or more one than another. Perhaps he know more now and will join us here after work or whatever. eq_shadimar
Dave - Unless I am mistaken (or he has gotten new speakers since I was over there last) Bob has LaScala's NOT Cornwalls. Laters,
Mallette
You are correct, sir. I've not been to Bob's. The modified Cornies are Mike's. Bob had done some mods to his La Scala's he is going to annunciate and elucidate. Slip of the pen, and brain. Dave
dbflash
Dave, After the meeting will you also post the lascala mods. thanks, danny
jt1stcav
Chris, yes I assigned to Material Management Center, Division Support Command (MMC DISCOM), 1st Cavalry Division, from July 1981 to January 1983. I was at the time a Specialist 4th Class under the command of Col. Leon E. Soloman; my MOS was an 81E10, or a Draftsman/Graphic Illustrator... Those were the days... Dave, boy do I wish the McIntosh power meter was in real time! Even though my classic MC250 is meterless, my very first Mac (an MC7200) had two of the most beautiful blue meters Mac ever put out, besides the huge MC1000 monoblock (that meter's the size of a human head!) Beaner-Bob
Ok Guys... For the record, I have a pair of La Scalas that ALK posted pictures of two or three weeks ago. The woofers are upgraded to K43s, the mid-range horns are Altec 811s with TAD 2001 drivers and I'm bi-amping the speakers with two Rane AC22 active, three-way crossovers. They also use some new ALK "steep slope" crossovers that ALK is far more qualified to discuss than I. See you at the (DFW Vintage Klipsch Klub) forum. ******
Charles Turner
Dave... Please add my name to the DFW group for upcoming events...I would be interested in meeting some of the locals. BTW...just discovered a nice little college jazz station broadcast by NTU out of Denton at 88.1. The signal is a bit weak but their audio engineer tells me he tries to use minimal signal compression. thanks...charles 1976 Cornwalls ALK crossovers Stax Lambda Signature - SRM T1 tube driver Rega P25 turntable Benz Micro H2 cartridge McIntosh MC225 amplifier McIntosh C15 McIntosh MR71 tuner Risch DIY 89259 cross-connect speaker cable Risch DIY 89259/89248 twisted pair interconnects
Mallette
That's a roger. I taught in the UNT RTVFilm department there for 8 years, and got two degrees as well. They do a very good job on signal purity. Signal is strong at Flower Mound. Dave
Dflip
I would also love to hear about the mods to the Cornwalls: crossovers, inductors and wiring. I have replaced the capacitors with 2.0 uF with Hovlands and 4.0 uF with Solens, and the inductors with Solen solid wire, 12 awg. I also replaced the inside wire with my speaker wire. I still had to put two wraps of rope caulk where the magnet meets the horn on the squawkers to tame the highs. Looking forward to your reviews. Audible Nectar
Are these mods being done to a Cornwall (alnico) or Cornwall II (ferrite)? Has anyone done mods on a Cornwall II (specifically crossovers)? I find this to be very interesting - I haven't heard much around here on Cornwall mods.
