MidWest Audio Fest report

I wasn't at the show, but I strongly agree with paulparrot, that everyone has different tastes in music... and it's very hard to judge something based on source material that is unfamiliar. I couldn't agree more with:

"When I say something sounded unnatural, that is based on my conception of what instruments and singers sound like in real life. It is possible that some of the source material I heard was mastered poorly, like with a smile EQ. In that case, when played back on equipment that I hadn't heard before, it's hard to know how much of the blame should go to the equipment and how much to the bad source material"

As much energy as we can put into music reproduction, it isn't always present during the recording/mixing/mastering of the actual music. Unless vendor obliges by playing some of my favourite test music, I (personal opinion) have found it hard to come to any conclusions on equipment. Unfortunately I don't have main-stream (or audiophile) taste in music, so it rarely happens.

Great thread, thanks for the posts, I was particularly interested to see the comments about Classic Audio Reproductions, ð Loudspeakers and Omega single-driver horns.

The vendors in the show rooms do not get a second chance to make a great first impression. As difficult as it may be, they should be prepared for any room problems. Unfortunately, unless they are tuning by something instantly accurate, such as the TacT, it may take a few days of experiments to discover the ideal room treatment and set-up solution.

Thanks for the Mod details Mike. Sounds like a pretty major change. I wonder what the gain would be as well as the cost. Many here praised the Klipsch/Altec combo...

As to room acoustics, I found this http://www.kbacoustics.com interesting. I can't use the program for the Khorns, they have to be in the corners, and I have the "L" shaped room which the program cannot handle, but maybe the KG-4s in the bedroom...

Hell, what do you know? Like me, you're freaking half deaf.

It's a good thing I didn't show up. I would have brought some Chevelle, Disturbed, Creed, and some STP -- and chased all of that damn sissy music out of the building.

I couldn't find a warm body to take my place at work this weekend. Maybe next time I'll just stick a corpse in my chair and leave.

What's the point in listening to anything there if all you get to hear is freaking polite audiofool music -- give me a break.

It might not be a bad idea that if we are serious about doing this (setting up a NOSvalves room), that we take some time and discuss set up and music selection beforehand. Maybe even print up a schedule for general distribution at the show of what time what system will be played, and what music there will be.

I can't imagine anything worse than having to listen to the likes of yo-yo mamma (or whatever the hell his name is) all day.

I dont think Maron is asking or saying I'm a 'Creatine' -- which is the crystalline molecule you are referencing.

No, he is thinking 'Cretan'. Cretans of course are from Crete, and the source of the modern day usage of 'Cretan' can be found in Titus 1:12 of the New Testament -- "Even one of their own prophets has said, "Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons."

Of course, I find this pretty funny -- and those of you who know me -- know why.12.gif

Yeesh.

I also agree that it is difficult to judge when you are not familiar with the music. Even when you just have to go down the hall to hear the next system, they are playing different music and it's still not that easy to compare. I guess the best thing to do is bring your own music -- something you are familiar with and something you can play on each system. I think one of the reasons I liked the Hartsfields, was that I enjoyed the music they were playing, even though I had never heard it before. It was something someone brought in. They were also really rocking the place -- probably one of the other main reasons I liked them! These were the only speakers that could be heard on the next floor. These were the most dynamic speakers I heard there (the Titans were never pushed very hard while I was around).

Mike82: You must've been the one talking to Bruce Eddgar when I was eavesdropping on your conversation. I heard him talking to someone about Khorn mods.

Paulparrot: I agree with your statement about Khorn owners. I too didn't hear anything that would make me want to replace them. I guess at the very least, that made the whole event worth attending!

A Klipsch room at the next event would be a great idea. Although I think it would be great if Klipsch did the honors. If they bring in some Heritage stuff, they'd have nothing to be intimidated about. Imagine if they were to show up with the Klipschorn Jubilee!!

I waited a while to post in this topic. I got to meet Craig and another guy sorry I already forgot your name, and I believe Mike at a sandwich shop named Kewpies.(OK, have to have time to eat. And yes for the money a great place for a local hand made burgers, fries and coke.)

I conclude with the overall feeling the "systems" at the show. I didn't want to give up my Klipschorns, or Cornwalls..although a few did sound better that the Heresy's.. but hey, at what cost too?

The Edgar big stuff...Titan did sound great. Dr. Bruce Edgar is kinda like a Paul Klipsch in a way. He has taken his own ideas...keeps tinkering with it and very very opinionated about things. He asked what I had after listening 2 min to the Edgar slimline ssystem, and I said sorry but I didn't like it. (He wanted my real opinion, so I gave it, politely of course.) He escorted me into the Titans.. You think the wife approval factor is bad with our big Klipsch speakers...Good luck with Bruce's stuff. It is huge, I mean really huge, and like others have said.. probably not for 99.9999999% of the people have a room or the $$ for it.

I think people like Bruce because he is truly very very nice, and is willing to answer dumb questions for those in search for their own musical nirvana.

My problem was within two seconds of telling him I had klipschorns, without asking me if I liked em, he went in to a 15 min you need to do this to them, switch this driver, cut this out......are you taking notes this is DR Edgar talking.... I felt trapped in intellectual constipation hell. I like my Klipschorns just as much as 90% of you here on the board. (The other 10% might tinker..) I would not change them in any way, I like them as they are. The sweat hard work to obtain them before eBay and other used methods, was a very substantial sum of money at the time when I got them out of school. I saved a long time and gave up things for almost a year to get them. OK, enough said. Kinda like getting a Porsche... your dream car...and someone sais.. nice car but have you done this.. bla bla bla...to it...have it tested here for bla bla bla.. and yes they know maybe more than you do about your own car...But they drive a chevy truck. OK, Hard to explain.

The hartsfield..for the un initiated was like a k horn bottom...with sides built into it..and a horn lens with a difractor. (think your AC outside metal stripps..fins.) It was cool..not way cool, but OK.

The Chicago horn club guys..all of them, were very nice non uppity and loved to chat, drink beer, and have a great time. (And listen to eachothers creations too.) The Tannoys were taken out of a studio monitor I believe. It was a full range speaker, 12-15 inch mounted on to a board (The horn tweeter was in the center of the woofer) the 15 dollar Radio Shack super tweeter was in fact also mounted on the board was fun to hear. The older VOTT Altec Lansing A7 or 8's not sure with a MONSTER sub in the corner used in theaters...I agree made me smile and sounded superb.

I learned a lot too listening to Craig. You can always be polite and say "Wow, must be the room... I am sure this sounds better in my house or room than in here..Klipsch code between us for man this stinks lets get outta here.) It is always a nice way to bow out when someone builds a Tube amp, or speakers costing maybe 8k, and makes 3-6 a year as a hobby...but between you and I sounds like crap. I now know after a full day of listening to amps I finally have a "feel" between solid state and Tube amplification.

Which leads me to my last area to chat about? Before I left I realized I had not seen everything I thought I had set out too. Besides the Fostex room where I found what a lot of DIY used in their products shown off at the show was a room full of speakers and amps by a company called Nohr. Or as they type it nOrh. (Small n big O on purpose.)

I highly suggest we all on the bulliten board keep a very good look on this company for those that appreciate incredible value and wild designs.. think very very high end insides at a value.

http://www.norh.com/products/se9/index.html at $399.00 US Dollars, yes a dollar under 4 hundred, it is an incredible amp. I am going to get one soon. Spend some time on the nOrh site...I have already spent hours, I think, this guy Michael is just a genius and a radical thorn in the side of High end audio aficionados. I gave a take it or leave it offer on a pair of 4.0's (speakers in solid walnut turned on a lathe by hand..incredible drivers) on faith.. never hearing them..I heard the 3.0's///they had one set of 4.0's to show, so I inquired as they were loading up after the 3.0's were all sold out...I I could purchase them too, to take home. I made a ridiculous low offer...and rather than take em all the way back to Thailand...lets just say I feel I "stole" em! (less than 1/2 retail..again very beautiful and sounds incredible. I am 100% happy) These are now in my bedroom will go in my office in my next house for sure.

We need to have a Klipsch room, I agree, if for nothing else... to show off some of what we all know is just as good if not better than 99% of what was shown at the show. I think at this level it is about learning your own likes and dislikes. And either agreeing with your own perceptions or working to again as I said, "Find musical nirvana." With 99% men with the one noticeable sexy lady in the Pi speaker room, the women were basically gone.. every ones BS was on high... about what they liked or disliked. As for me, I just enjoyed that these kind of things even exist. I mean for 10 dollars admission..I would have paid double that just to hang out with people like you on the board. And I got to, with Craig and a few others also. Can't wait to show you all Indianapolis, IN for the 2003 Klipschfest in June!!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the nice compliments. MAF was good time this year and keeps getting better. Mike Baker did one hell of a job with this promotion and it's only been two years. I hope he decides to stick with it and continue the annual event. Like many of you who were able to attend. I was very disappointed that Klipsch was not able to attend as a vendor. I hope for future MAF events they can bring the Heritage line up. For those who stopped by to visit and listen. It was great to meet you. See you all at next year's MAF
