garymd
Blue light rain, whoa unbroken chain, Looking for familiar faces in an empty window pane. Listening for the secret, searching for the sound But I could only hear the preacher and the baying of his hounds. Willow sky, whoa, I walk and wonder why, They say love your brother, but you will catch it when you try. Roll you down the line boy, drop you for a loss, Ride you out on a cold railroad and nail you to a cross. November and more, as I wait for the score, Theyre telling me forgiveness is the key to every door. A slow winder day a night like forever, Sink like a stone, float like a feather. Lilac rain, unbroken chain, song of the sawhet owl. Out on the mountain, itll drive you insane, listening to the winds howl Unbroken chain of sorrow and pearls, unbroken chain of shy and sea. Unbroken chain of the western wind, unbroken chain of you and me. - Robert M. Petersen
garymd
Let my inspiration flow in token rhyme, suggesting rhythm, That will not forsake you, till my tale is told and done. While the firelights aglow, strange shadows from the flames will grow, Till things weve never seen will seem familiar. Shadows of a sailor, forming winds both foul and fair all swarm. Down in carlisle, he loved a lady many years ago. Here beside him stands a man, a soldier from the looks of him, Who came through many fights, but lost at love. While the story teller speaks, a door within the fire creaks; Suddenly flies open, and a girl is standing there. Eyes alight, with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair, She takes her fan and throws it, in the lions den. Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell? I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance. The sailor gave at least a try, the soldier being much too wise, Strategy was his strength, and not disaster. The sailor, coming out again, the lady fairly leapt at him. Thats how it stands today. you decide if he was wise. The story teller makes no choice. soon you will not hear his voice. His job is to shed light, and not to master. Since the end is never told, we pay the teller off in gold, In hopes he will return, but he cannot be bought or sold. Terrapin station Inspiration, move me brightly. light the song with sense and color; Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask. Faced with mysteries dark and vast, statements just seem vain at last. Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to terrapin. Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim but one is bright; The spiral light of venus, rising first and shining best, On, from the northwest corner, of a brand new crescent moon, While crickets and cicadas sing, a rare and different tune, Terrapin station. In the shadow of the moon, terrapin station. And I know well get there soon, terrapin station. I cant figure out, terrapin, if its the end or beginning, terrapin, But the trains put its brakes on, terrapin, And the whistle is screaming, terrapin. Terrapin station - at the siding While you were gone, these faces filled with darkness. The obvious was hidden. with nothing to believe in, Sullen wings of fortune beat like rain. Youre back in terrapin for good or ill again, for good or ill again. - Robert Hunter
garymd
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come thru the music, Would you hold it near as it were your own? Its a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps theyre better left unsung. I dont know, dont really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. But if you fall you fall alone, If you should stand then whos to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home. - Robert Hunter
garymd
All the years combine, they melt into a dream, A broken angel sings from a guitar. In the end theres just a song comes cryin up the night Thru all the broken dreams and vanished years. Stella blue. stella blue. When all the cards are down, theres nothing left to see, Theres just the pavement left and broken dreams. In the end theres still that song comes cryin like the wind. Down every lonely street thats ever been Stella blue. stella blue. Ive stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel, cant win for trying. Dust off those rusty strings just one more time, Gonna make them shine, shine It all rolls into one and nothing comes for free, Theres nothing you can hold, for very long. And when you hear that song come crying like the wind, It seems like all this life was just a dream. Stella blue. stella blue. - Robert Hunter
Allan Songer
Another one I really like: Time -- Tom Waits Well the smart money's on Harlow and the moon is in the street And the shadow boys are breaking all the laws And you're east of East Saint Louis and the wind is making speeches And the rain sounds like a round of applause And Napoleon is weeping in a carnival saloon His invisible fiancee's in the mirror And the band is going home, it's raining hammers, it's raining nails And it's true there's nothing left for him down here And it's time time time, and it's time time time And it's time time time that you love And it's time time time And they all pretend they're orphans and their memory's like a train You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away And the things you can't remember tell the things you can't forget That history puts a saint in every dream Well she said she'd stick around until the bandages came off But these mama's boys just don't know when to quit And Mathilda asks the sailors "Are those dreams or are those prayers?" So close your eyes, son, and this won't hurt a bit Oh it's time time time, and it's time time time And it's time time time that you love And it's time time time Well things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl The boys just dive right off the cars and splash into the street And when they're on a roll she pulls a razor from her boot And a thousand pigeons fall around her feet So put a candle in the window and a kiss upon his lips As the dish outside the window fills with rain Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart And pay the fiddler off 'til I come back again Oh it's time time time, and it's time time time And it's time time time that you love And it's time time time And it's time time time, and it's time time time And it's time time time that you love And it's time time time
Allan Songer
And one more: Tom Waits INNOCENT WHEN YOU DREAM (BARROOM) by Tom Waits The bats are in the belfry the dew is on the moor where are the arms that held me and pledged her love before and pledged her love before Chorus: It's such a sad old feeling the fields are soft and green it's memories that I'm stealing but you're innocent when you dream when you dream you're innocent when you dream Running through the graveyard we laughed my friends and I we swore we'd be together until the day we died until the day we died Repeat chorus I made a golden promise that we would never part I gave my love a locket and then I broke her heart and then I broke her heart Repeat chorus

garymd
Your rain falls like crazy fingers Peals of fragile thunder keeping time Recall the days that still are to come Some sing blue Hang your heart on laughing willow Stray down to the water Deep Sea of Love Beneath the sweet calm face of the sea Swift undertow Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know See how it feels in the end May Lady Lullaby sing plainly for you Soft, strong, sweet and true Cloud hands reaching from a rainbow Tapping at the window touch your hair So swift and bright Strange figures of light Float in air Who can stop what must arrive now? Something new is waiting to be born Dark as the night You're still by my side Shining side Gone are the days we stopped to decide Where we should go We just ride Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams Gone - both dream and lie Life may be sweeter for this I don't know Feels like it might be alright While Lady Lullaby sings plainly for you Love still rings true Midnight on a carousel ride Reaching for the gold ring down inside Never could reach It just slips away but I try - Robert Hunter

Allan Songer
Frank's Wild Years Well Frank settled down in the Valley and hung his wild years on a nail that he drove through his wife's forehead he sold used office furniture out there on San Fernando Road and assumed a $30,000 loan at 15 1/4 % and put down payment on a little two bedroom place his wife was a spent piece of used jet trash made good bloody marys kept her mouth shut most of the time had a little Chihuahua named Carlos that had some kind of skin disease and was totally blind. They had a thoroughly modern kitchen self-cleaning oven (the whole bit) Frank drove a little sedan they were so happy One night Frank was on his way home from work, stopped at the liquor store, picked up a couple Mickey's Big Mouths drank 'em in the car on his way to the Shell station, he got a gallon of gas in a can, drove home, doused everything in the house, torched it, parked across the street, laughing, watching it burn, all Halloween orange and chimney red then Frank put on a top forty station got on the Hollywood Freeway headed north Never could stand that dog
thebes
Thanks for sharing Turner with us Gary. I've always thought since the 60's our songwriters have become our bards and poets. Can't stay away from the lyrics of Tom Waits. Here's one I've been really loving lately. Everyman. Poignant. Pathos. It's got it all. Try a listen to Jennifer Well's rendering on her cd, "The Well" Invitation To The Blues lyrics Well she's up against the register with an apron and a spatula, Yesterday's deliveries, tickets for the bachelors She's a moving violation from her conk down to her shoes, Well, it's just an invitation to the blues And you feel just like Cagney, she looks like Rita Hayworth At the counter of the Schwab's drugstore You wonder if she might be single, she's a loner and likes to mingle Got to be patient, try and pick up a clue She said How you gonna like 'em, over medium or scrambled?, You say Anyway's the only way, be careful not to gamble On a guy with a suitcase and a ticket getting out of here It's a tired bus station and an old pair of shoes This ain't nothing but an invitation to the blues But you can't take your eyes off her, get another cup of java, It's just the way she pours it for you, joking with the customers Mercy mercy, Mr. Percy, there ain't nothing back in Jersey But a broken-down jalopy of a man I left behind And the dream that I was chasing, and a battle with booze And an open invitation to the blues But she used to have a sugar daddy and a candy-apple Caddy, And a bank account and everything, accustomed to the finer things He probably left her for a socialite, and he didn't 'cept at night, And then he's drunk and never even told her that her cared So they took the registration, and the car-keys and her shoes And left her with an invitation to the blues Cause there's a Continental Trailways leaving local bus tonight, good evening You can have my seat, I'm sticking round here for a while Get me a room at the Squire, the filling station's hiring, And I can eat here every night, what the hell have I got to lose? Got a crazy sensation, go or stay? now I gotta choose, And I'll accept your invitation to the blues

whell
Here's a song that I always sang to my daughter when she was a baby - quieted her right down when she was crying, or needed to calm down before bed or nap time. The songs that I associate with specific events in my younger days, and now I guess "my older days", have the most meaning to me: Why are there so many songs about rainbows And what's on the other side? Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, And rainbows have nothing to hide. So we've been told and some choose to believe it I know they're wrong, wait and see. Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, The lovers, the dreamers and me. Who said that every wish would be heard and answered When wished on the morning star? Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it, And look what it's done so far. What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing And what do we think we might see? Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, The lovers, the dreamers, and me. All of us under its spell, We know that it's probably magic... ... Have you been half asleep? And have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name. ... Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors? The voice might be one and the same I've heard it too many times to ignore it It's something that I'm s'posed to be... Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, The lovers, the dreamers, and me. garymd
Another by Robert Hunter, music by Jerry Garcia of course. How could I forget this one. Blues For Allah: Arabian wind, the needle's eye is thin The ships of state sail on mirage and drown in sand Out in no man's land, where Allah does command What good is spilling blood? It will not grow a thing "Taste eternity", the swords sing Blues for Allah, Insh'Allah They lie where they fall, there's nothing more to say The desert stars are bright tonight, let's meet as friends The flower of Islam, the fruit of Abraham The thousand stories have come round to one again Arabian night, our gods pursue their flight What fatal flowers of darkness bloom from seeds of light Bird of Paradise fly in the white sky Blues for Allah, Insh'Allah Let's see with our heart these things our eyes have seen And know the truth must still lie somewhere in between Under eternity Under eternity Under eternity Under eternity Under eternity Under eternity Bird of Paradise fly in white sky Blues for Allah, Insh'Allah

maxg
Well not being one to risk running afoul of copyright laws I kinda like the lyrics from the Police song Russians. At the time it came out I thought it was very powerful - although changes in World politics now make the fears expressed somewhat redundant. We got a whole new bunch of fears to deal with no - aren't we the lucky ones!!
chuckears
Hmmm, from memory here: "In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria, Conditioned to respond to all the threats From the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets Mr. Kruschev said, "We wil bury you" I don't subscribe to this point of view It would be such an ignorant thing to do If the Russians love their children too." That sure sounds familiar; except for recently, the so-called threat was made for the imagined enemy by our own leaders; we ended up, 200+ billion dollars later, owning what we broke, and unable to fix it... We say we love our children, yet we are leaving them trillions in debt, while we buy our DVDs and SUVs and ...ah, who gives a crap, the world is going to end soon anyway; Rapture and all that (scary to think that many of our current leaders actually believe this...) Now, back to the music...
