No Disc
Obviously some work has been done, and looks clean. New jacks on the back and a couple of auri caps put in... but $599 Why? http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?intatube&1106448094
Daddy Dee
It's been a while since I've followed any Ebay auctions for HF-81's, but about six or so months ago I was floored to see an original stock HF-81 sell on Ebay for $620. Maybe the Eico stock has gone up lately.
NOSValves
Actually there is a ton of work done to this amp ! From what I can see there is not one original resistor or capacitor left under the chassis. All new tube sockets the works. A rebuild like this would cost a fortune to have done. Daddy Dee
Craig, thanks for the observations here. That's an impressive rebuild.
No Disc
Well, I guess that justifies the price then. I guess I can't tell stock caps from aftermarket cause it all looked stock to me. You've seen more of these then me so I believe you. - Tim
jorjen
If it sounds like it should sound with what has been done to it, it is worth every bit of the asking price. The one Craig did for me was a really, really nice, sweet sounding piece of gear. Sometimes I wish I had never sold it and I got $800.00 for mine. Deang
It kind of looks like a stock rebuild to me. Didn't it originally have Orange Drops to begin with?
Tom Mobley
No, they had ceramic disks. Wonder why this guy went to all that work and and used Orange Drops? There's many caps available that are better than O.D.s. Oops, my HF-81 has OD at the main coupling position. They were the first caps I ever changed out. Loaded with Auricaps everywhere else now. NOSValves
Well I would of never went to all that trouble of a complete tear down/rewire with new tube sockets and used Orange Drops myself. Still tons of hours were spent rebuilding this one. Craig
ZplyonZ
Thought the assembled might be interested to know that this amp eventually went to a Klipsch guy, namely me. I was scared off by the price too, but when the seller lowered it to $499 and then offered an additional discount, I couldn't say no. When I found out who the seller was I felt even better about the deal... this amp is a chassis-up rebuild by Dan Nicotera, one of the gurus-in-residence at the EICO TUBE AMP yahoo group... guy really knows his stuff. Can't say why he didn't go for higher end parts, but I am geeked about the unit nevertheless. I am hoping I get the HF-81 in hand before the holiday break, since I now have a pair of Cornies to go with my La Scalas! I will let everybody know how it sounds... Parrot
Yes, excellent to know it was done by an EICO expert.

Chris---------------- Yup Dan and I converse back and forth through email all the time. We even trade parts and tricks from time to time in fact I wouldn't be surprised if one side panel on your amp came from me I sent him a spare I had not long ago . Should be a great amp for you. mike stehr
Did you catch the cat on the Eico list posting about a Eico HF-12 Ebay auction that came out at $999? He posted a link for the auction, I tried to pull it up, but Ebay sh*tcanned it or sumthin.... I just wanna know if it was BS, or whatever. I thought the 7 thousand dollar Tannoy Black was insane....
