UPS takes it out on my RC7

That is a good reason to call them "oops". I hope that was insured, and that you have resolution very quickly. When dealing with a claim, write everything down, the person's name you spoke with, the time, a short description. Keep all the packaging materials, and take pictures of it before it disappears with the "oops" claim person for good.

Untimely Package Sacrifice

They suck. I lost out on a $1K transmission gearset because the freaking apes had decided the "packaging was not to our standards". BS. A double-boxed steel gearset somehow "disappeared" from the package in shipment. Yeah, right! Some UPS bozo somewhere has a nice new gearset in his transmission is my guess. I have fought them forever but by the time I sic a lawyer on them I would be well past the loss amount. I hope the guy's transmission explodes and his car burns to the ground from the ensuing crash and fire. Oh, yes, after he walks away unscathed, and able to watch it burn...

Man, that sucks! Didn't you read the posts on the dangers of shipping speakers UPS?

FWIW, from here it looks like the woofers failed because of G forces,

not direct impact. If so, I would file a claim and go after

reimbursement. Heck, I would anyway if the packaging was half way

decent. IIRC UPS has mechanical systems that shunt packages from

conveyor to converyor with a ram, besides the gorillas they

employ. This just doesn't seem right.

Doesn't look beyond repair though...

Interesting... My main concern with shipping new speakers has

been the MDF cabinet. In this case, it seems to have been the

plastic woofer frames that failed.

Hmmm.... Maybe what the country needs is a(nother) class action suit agains UPS...

Definitely. There is no "impact" damage to the enclosure - no crushed

veneer, no smooshed MDF. There are a good many scuffs and scratches on

the veneer from the bits of broken surround frame that roamed the inside

of the plastic bag used to wrap the speaker.

This speaker was dropped onto its back and the surrounds failed.

Repair? Sure. But not by me and not on my dollar and then not in my HT.

It's a new speaker I paid for and it will be new speaker I shall have.

Harrumph.

What are the alternatives to UPS besides FedEx? I am thinking I will

have the next one it shipped FedEx.But I am open to suggestions.

I had one that was busted up like that when I got home from the local

dealer. I packed that ***** right back up and took straight back

to them (fortunatly, I am not more than two miles from the

dealer). They exchanged it (with apologies) for another

one. One of the reasons why I rather buy from a local dealer

instead of playing the "shipping russion roulette".

As 'colterphoto1' said - Pickup or Shutup!

But anyway - that won't do you good now. I'll just parrot what

everybody else said, get on UPS' case and stay on it until satisfactory

resolution.

Good luck and hopefully, you'll be enjoying the sweet sounds out of a replacement RC-7 soon.

Klipsch is where exactly? Someplace I am not, I am pretty sure. So how

does the little RC7 get from Klipsch to this special place where I can

pick it up without it being shipped there?

The nearest dealer to me is a 6 hour round trip. Gas alone for the trip is 3 times the shipping cost for the speaker.

I don't consider a 50 lbs RC7 large and bulky.

But now that you've told me to shut up I understand completely.

It is my fault, isn't it. You are correct. I apologize. What was I thinking...

Where/whom did you get it from? Was it an eBay purchase? I would

also contact the seller/dealer that you got it from. See what

they can do.

I know a Klipsch dealer is not always available, but in hind-site, the

cost of gas and time to make the trip is a small price compared to the

hassle that you'll probably have to go through to get this one replaced.

the "Pickup or Shutup" line is meant to be a joke - don't take it

personally (my apologies if you took that wrong - probably should've

stuck one of those cute little smiley things after it).

But the gist of it is still valid - if at all possible, try, TRY, to

personally pick up it instead of shipping. But, if you gotta -

well, that is what insurance is supposed to be for.

Freight is probably the way to go for speakers but this is just a

little 50 pounder. I was worried about a crushed corner or something

relatively minor. But this?

It's totaled. There's little chance of argument from UPS about that - hopefully.

It came from an authorized Klipsch dealer, people with whom I have done

business and with whom I have a good relationship. They will sort it

out with me. I have no doubts of that.

The next one will be double boxed and shipped by another carrier.

As far as picking one up. I tried that too. Three hours driving only to

discover the one set aside by the mass market retailer was the floor

model that had been sitting, literally, on the floor of their HT room

for 6 months+. The floor where every boot toe and curious child could

find those pretty copper fragile cones.

I should have taken that one - for full pop retail no discount offered

damaged or not sorry none to be found anywhere in our system we'll need

to get back to you on that sorry.

Nah. I will work with the good guys and take my chances with a bit o' shipping.

Thanks Steve, yes I didn't mean anything personal by the 'pickup or shutup' line, just a turn of a phrase. Not a very good one, I'm afraid. It has been edited and I apologize.

I would imagine that any dealer ordering enough stock would have their Klipsch freight delivered, but that's just a guess. Unless they're in a very rural area (doubtful), most of the product is probably picked up by the customer directly. If you live out in the sticks, guess that's one of the prices for life in the 'burbs or on the farm (which I used to do)

The way my RC7 was packaged was in the expandable foam that completely encased the product, so it should have been able to take normal handling. Is this how yours was boxed? Put the thing back in the box, pretend to be in a big hurry handling it and run with it from your front door to your car in the driveway. Dropped it, didn't you? That's what the shipping guys have to contend with. Stuff tumbles all over the place on the sorting conveyors.

The problem with ebayers packaging (generally speaking, I know that's not how you got yours) is that heavy objects fall through peanuts to the outside edge of the box, where they will be immediately damaged by any drop at all. Add that to the use of particle board, which doesn't take shocks so well and you have a recipie for disaster.

Most of my ebay purchases are for Heritage gear, which up until recently WASN"T MADE ANY MORE. I treat my Klipsch speakers like antique furniture and don't trust anyone with them. It's extra expense to run and fetch my gear personally, but in my sick mind, it makes a journey worth retelling. I enjoy the personal adventure of heading out into the jungle after my prey.

So better luck next time. Sorry again for the poor choice of words.

It was back in the late 80s to mid 90s that I worked at UPS, so this may still not be true, but I saw lots of Klipsch boxes pass through the Livonia Hub in Michigan. The sheer volume of packages moving through a building a day and the law of averages insures several packages come to an untimely death. The volume is really staggering. I don't think the average person can even comprehend how many packages a day must be moved, sorted, packed into a truck, unpacked, etc.

At any rate being a Klipsch lover from way back when the boxes always caught my eye. I would imagine a large shipment would come via common carrier or freight. But if a small store had one order for one particular finish of Heresies I am sure they went UPS. I saw way too many Klipsch boxes for it to be person to person shipments. I would say based on boxes I saw anything from a Forte on down in size goes UPS. Obviously not Fortes any more but you get the idea.

never trust UPS to come into contact with your speakers if you ever want to see them in one piece again! these morons were to suppose to take my rc3 center channel which they destroyed when i sent it ebay customer. remember this is a small 30 pound speaker in a small box that they were supposed to pick up. they ended up taking my rf7 that was in the garage when i was not home and left the rc3 in the middle of my garage. his order said that the package he was to pick up was small and about 30 pounds, but instead took a box that was over 100 pounds and 4-5 times the size. what kind of idiot can mistake a 30 pound box for a 100 pound box and not suspect something is wrong. a complete lack of common sense. long story short, by the time they found this speaker it was auctioned off in phoenix, and completely destroyed with the cabinet in 3 pieces and all the drivers completely detached from the speaker. it took 6 months to get resolution and just finally received my check yesterday.

beware of UPS and never use to ship speakers you value
