thebes
Boy there have been a lot of pretty good threads in this section lately, not to mention the active participation in our own weekly thread. Glad to see the action here is picking up. Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp etc.) As usual I'll kick it off with: James Brown, "Eveybody's Doin' the Hustle and Dead on the Double Bump", soul, lp Yup still stuck on soul so why not play a little something from the Godfather of Soul himself. This one has the disco hit Hustlle!! and the always popular "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag". Only decent recording values but the energy makes up for it. So get up of your knees and hit the dancefloor! So what are you grooving to this week?
nicholtl
The Clientele "Strange Geometry" - Dreamy, haze-rock. Described as having a lush, soaring sound of Coldplay meeting Simon & Garfunkel. Diecast "Tearing Down Your Blue Skies" - Heavymetal that changes from brutal double-bassdrum and screams to melodic crooning. If you're a fan of Shadows Fall or Killswitch Engage, this album is definitely for you. Sigur Ros "( )" - almost indescribable in their music (as the English language has no words that would do this band justice), the closest thing to categorize this heavenly, epic, and utterly majestic sound of this Icelandic group is to take Thom Yorke's (of Radiohead) vocals, and layer them over the fuzzy tapestry of My Bloody Valentine's shoegazer rock style. Sigur Ros is truly a band of the ages.
Steve_L
The Rolling Stones: Sticky Fingers Album: Original 12 inch vinyl - you can buy ti on CD these days. But the album art with the real zipper on the cover doesn't translate well into plastic CD packaging. The Stones in their hippest prime, I never thought it got the credit it deserves in their discography. Brown Sugar (sex, not drugs) is such a great song, as is Sister Morphine (clearly drugs) and Wild Horses are classics. This released in the late Spring and early Summer of '71 just as I was graduating from college. Great days, great times, great music. wheelman
Naked- self titled album Naked Cd rock that is very radio friendly. These guys would of been huge. They just dissapeared without a trace. Weird because they seemed to have substance while being radio friendly. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000A6KD/qid=1130201920/sr=2-2/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2/002-6034250-8608804?v=glance&s=music

sputnik
nicholtl: Sigur Ros is one of my favorites and probably Iceland's best. Check out and earlier cd - "Agaetis Byrjun". This week, my pick is "Variations on Lady" by Flairck, 1978. This is the first album by an incredible Dutch band that is still putting out CDs. Somewhat akin to Mannheim Steamroller's early music. I'll admit that when I first bought the album in 1979, it was just for the album cover art. Probably the best piece is "Variaties op een Dame" on side II - the 22 minute title track. itsawomanthing
I'm sticking beside thebes this week.....(trying to stay out of trouble!!) my pick - The Committments Soundtrack from the movie by the same name - 1991. Deco Cuffe (played by Andrew Strong), was, at the time a young Irish lad of the ripe old age of 15 - who leads the group on 5 of the songs - that kid had a voicebox on him [] ("Believe me, I swear he didn't look 15 officer!!") "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Saviours of Soul, Direct from Dublin, Ireland" - great music/great movie!!! "They Had Absolutely Nothing. But They Were Willing To Risk It All. The travails of Jimmy Rabbitte to form the "World's Hardest Working Band," The Commitments, and bring soul music to the people of Dublin, Ireland." 1. Mustang Sally 2. Take Me To The River 3. Chain Of Fools 4. The Dark End Of The Street (my personal favorite!!) 5. Destination: Anywhere 6. I Can't Stand The Rain (probably my 2nd favorite) 7. Try A Little Tenderness 8. Treat Me Right 9. Do Right Woman Do Right Man 10. Mr. Pitiful 11. I Never Loved A Man (oh yea baby!!) 12. In The Midnight Hour 13. Bye Bye Baby 14. Slip Away This is a great cd and wonderful movie!! Recommended buy!!! This might have been something you could have tried "back in the day" Sputnik!! If you'd like to listen to the music here ya go: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?PID=1103429&style=music&frm=frooglemusic

sputnik
You have to admit, it's a nice image. Added: When I first glanced at the album in the record shop, I thought it was a sunset over the Sahara. .........................It had been been a long time. nicholtl
Sup Sputnik... Yeah, Sigur Ros is amazing. Beyond words, literally and figuratively, since the floating vocals are sung in both Icelandic and Hopelandic (a made-up language, though few listeners would ever know the difference!). I only mentioned "( )," but both their albums "Agaetis Byrjun" and "Takk" are astounding as well. I haven't yet listened to "Von," but from what I've heard and read, it's significantly different (and worse) than the aforementioned? theryugobuddy
We had a little party by the pool this weekend and played some of my favorite ska-- The Specials--the Specials. The personality of this band jumps out of the speakers. Great guitar, rhythms, and vocals-- Elvis Costello produced this one around 1980-- Whenver I hear this it sounds fresh and timeless and rocking---
InFlux
I so enjoyed testing out a Counterpoint amplifier last night with this CD and my KLF-20's that I just had to share. Wynton Marsalis - Joe Cool's Blues: 1. Linus and Lucy 2. Buggy Ride 3. Peppermint Patty 4. On Peanuts Playground 5. Oh, Good Grief! 6. Wright Brothers Rag 7. Charlier Brown 8. Little Red-Haired Girl 9. Pebble Beach 10. Snoopy and Woodstock 11. Little Birdie 12. Why, Charlie Brown 13. Joe Cool's Blues (Snoopy's Return) It is Wynton's take on the classic Peanut's cartoon music. While the CD gets mixed reviews from Jazz purists, I rather enjoyed it. The quality of the recording is good and the imaging is fun. Several of the recordings were not excessively cleaned up, and they provided a more "raw" sound vs a sound booth production (track 1 for example). I would consider this a cd that simply makes you smile while you tap your toe. Amazon . com has sound bites you can listen to before you buy. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. itsawomanthing
Ok - 1 more from me before the week ends. I'm sitting here listening to Adam Makowicz - "The Name is Makowicz (Ma-Ko-Vitch) / Jazz 1. "A" Flat Elegy (For Earl Hines) 2. You Do Something To Me 3. Dirty Blue 4. Moondust 5. Tough Chic 6. Pearl Grey 7. Bop Do Combo 8. Past Tense This is good background music - dinner party, chatting or relaxing. Takes the tension out of the day and makes you feel like you are floating. Have a great weekend!!
RichardP
For those who like the Commitments, there is also a Commitments Vol 2 CD, with the songs: 1. Hard To Handle 2. Grits Ain't Groceries 3. I Thank You 4. That's The Way Love Is 5. Show Me 6. Saved 7. Too Many Fish In The Sea 8. Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song) 9. Land Of A Thousand Dances 10. Nowhere To Run 11. Bring It On Home To Me The original movie DVD had only Dolby Surround, but it was re-released a couple of years ago in DD5.1. One of my favorite movies and CDs. Those backup singers are honeys.
