For $15 more, we get 20 movie channels, 20 music channels and hundreds of crap channels. No media is more decadent than the excess of American TV. As a lazy, good for nothing, channel to channel surfing bum, I love the cable channels. They offer the very best of TV. There is nothing like the uncensored HBO adult dramas of Band of Brothers, Oz, Sex in the City, The Sopranos and the Arli$$. There is nothing on the banal networks like the titillating risqué that starts at 11 o'clock: HBO After Dark, Taxicab Confessions and the tepid porn of ShowTime. There is nothing like watching the twin towers collapse on 4 news channels. Wait a few months and every movie makes it way to cable. The good ones will play over and over and over again. As Good as It Gets, Notting Hill, Dangerous Liaisons, American Beauty, Cider House Rules, Something about Mary and the blasting bass of U-571 and Starship Troopers are all here. The movies that do poorly in their preview stage are quickly advertised on cable, along with a media blitz of ads when they open in the theaters. Then, since they have the emotional depth and maturity of a teenage boy, they quickly fade and run to cable to collect whatever they can get. You know how a weak a movie really is when you see its ads on cable before it makes it way to the theater. Don't sign up if you do not really want it though. You can always choose from a growing selection of DVDs. Signing up for cable is addicting, like buying a powerful sub-woofer, or smoking a cigarette; you won't want to be without it. Hooked it up like I normally would through the VCR to the TV, then added patch cords for the audio and S-video "out" to the tv/dbs "in" on my receiver. ( "monitor out" S-video on receiver is hooked to S-video "in' on TV. A much better picture than the co-ax can provide) Having the co-ax hooked up through VCR gives me the option of watching the tube without haveng the H/T on. eq_shadimar Posted October 23, 2001 Share Posted October 23, 2001 Heyas Kain - I have had my TV hooked up to my stereo (now HT system) since they first started broadcasting stereo TV. I love it!!! I now have digital cable (no HDTV yet) and the sound is great too. You would be suprised at the number of shows that are being broadcast in Pro-Logic Surround. Dave Letterman, Simpsons, Moives, MTV, sports, etc... I would recommend that you do it if you can. However be fore warned sometimes hooking up your cable box to your audio system will cause some ground loop hum type problems that you will need to get an isolator for. I am currently using the S-Video out and Stereo RCA out from my cable box and running to my AVR. My TV speakers are disconnected (via a switch on the TV). EDIT: Humm I see that this could be taken another way too. If I had a dedicated HT room with a front projection screen etc.. I would still probably hook up a cable or Sat feed. I mean one day everyone will get on the same page and start allowing HDTV over cable and via more Sat channels. Laters, ------------------ ...wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world... I have the cable box hooked up using S-video cables and a Monster Datalink 100 to the receiver for digital sound. I would say 80% of it is watching TV during the week. We rent a movie or two on the weekend, and listen to a little music in between. It add's a lot to some TV shows, more so than you would think. Unfortunately when the World Trade Center was hit, I lost several stations. I still have HBO, ShowTime and CBS. This weekends Tenn. v. " Eq Shaq, I think we discussed the hum issue in another thread, but I'll bring it up again I went by Radio Shack over the weekend and said I had a hum in system, mostly when the TV's on and playing through my rig. (I have it hooked up pretty much like everybody else ... cable from the wall to the TV, patch cords for A/V out to the TV/IN on the Denon. I've tried powering the TV and audio components up off of different circuits (using the extension cord), but no tickie.) Anyway, the Radio Shack guy shows me this device called a ground loop eliminator, and it looks like an RCA patch cord wrapped around ferrite "o" coil. Is this what you were referring to above, or were you referring to a similar or different device? Also, how does it install? Thanks for your help ... the hum is driving me bananas. BTW, I have some hum when playing DVDs and CDs, but my audiophile buddy says it's just "the floor noise from the tube amps" ... It's pretty inaudible once the music starts playing.
