Dorm Room

So my friends and I landed this killer suite next year and we are

looking for a killer system for the killer suite. I already have

the ProMedia 5.1 for my own personal room, but the common room is going

to need something. Some points to consider...

1. The room is about 15' x 15'.

2. The setup needs to be able to accomodate a CD player, a TV (possibly an LCD projector as said TV), and an X-Box.

3. There are 4 of us total in the suite, and I only can really

expect to have about $500 for the whole sound system. (I already

have the X-Box and projector/TV).

4. Ideally we would want a 5.1 system, but if there is an

economic and performance-wise comparable solution, that would be

acceptable too.

Thems the requirements... I guess.

In my spare time I have been doing a bit of research and a lot of the

prepackaged systems (like the ones you can buy at Best Buy etc...) seem

okay, but I just want a little more bang... and if possible more bang

for my buck too. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am guessing the

minimum I would need in components would be a CD player, an amp, a

subwoofer, and some speakers.

So you wise gurus of the Klipsch forum what do you suggest?

PS - The system doesnt neccessarily have to be Klipsch, because the

quality and price may not be quite what is appropriate for a common

room in which parties will be held, I just recognize your superior

intelligence, virility, and audiophonic prowess, etc. Thanks

again.

A complete 5.1 system under $500 will be a challenge.

You could piece together a fairly decent 2-channel system for $500 if you go with used equipment. KG4s would work well (and sound great) in a dorm room and can be had for about $250 (the passive woofers should provide all the bass that a small room can handle). A vintage HK X30 receiver would match up nicely and set you back about $100. That leaves $150 for a universal CD/DVD/SACD player. Pioneer makes a unit in this price range that performs pretty well for the price.

That's what I would do on that budget. I would much rather have a good 2-channel set up that a poor 5.1 (even for movies).

Seadogs on the right track. For that amount of money you need to go

used. I would recommend KG 3.5's for mains, a KV 1, 2 or 3

for center channel and KG 1.5's or 2.0's for rear topped off by the

cheapest Toshiba DVD player Best Buy sells (go new for the DVD player).

Might cost a bit more than $500, but you can always throw a kegger to

raise the difference. The closer to home you find them the better

off you will be. If you, or your buddies are in a major

metropolitan area, Klipsch comes up all the time. For example, right

know there's a pair of RF3's for sale in Washington DC Craigslist for

$200, a killer deal.

As you find stuff ask here first and we'll make sure you don't go wrong.

use the 5.1 promedia you already have, buy a reciever with line out 1/8 mini stero plug which will be the decoder for the ultras.

goto soundwise.org and mount the speakers to the wall if you want with the brackes (cheap) I have used the promedia 5.1 ultra in a 25X25 foot room with great success, just corner load the subwoofer

If you are in school, you probably already have a computer with DVD player...run that to your projector. Get a killer sound card with 5.1 out. Buy 3 Sonic Impact amps for 6 channels of power. Blow the rest of the cash on Klipsch speakers. I ike Thebes idea of the KG line. I picked up RB-15s for another room and think 5 of those would be really nice for a small HT set up as well.

The good 2-channel over low end 5.1 is also good advice. Add speakers so you throw keggers with entry fee as already suggested [:D]

Here's what I had stuffed into my dorm room. You can see on the left side one of my LaScalas. What you can't see are the EV speakers that are just a touch smaller than the LaScalas. This room was probably 12x14 or something cozy like that. I put this system together by the time I was probably 20 years old.

Maybe you could buy one piece...someone else another...?
