I grew up in South Texas and my dad would take us to Port Aransas every year and I remember going out crabbing for blue crabs. All you needed was a net, some nylon twine, and a smelly old rotting chicken. It would not take long to get an ice chest full of them. The real work was cooking and cleaning the things which I did not have to do. Too much work! I can just go to Costco and pick up a can of the jumbo lump crab meat for like $12.

I used to catch crawfish as a kid as well, did boil up a batch of some big ones from time to time. There was a pond that they cleared out and built a bank around and there were so many of them they would be walking around in the parking lot at night, big ones too! Not the little bitty ones some that were close to the size of a lobster. Yummy with some crab boil mix, I just ate the tails though.

I like Maine lobster better especially when it goes on sale for $2.99 or $4.99 a pound. I have been to a couple of clambakes that are similar to that huge crab stew. Gotta love shellfish. Yum.

I never had crawfish, what exactly does it taste like, more shrimp like or more lobster like?

Heh, 2.99 and pound? I have never seen it dip below 6.99 where I live.

What does crawfish taste like? Wellll...neither like shrimp nor lobster. Crawfish have smaller bodies than either and absorb more of the spices in the water. I have had crawfish boiled without spices and they are fairly bland. They do not have the instrinc taste of lobster that we taste even when "just steamed' . With the usual spices, crawfish are sharper and more intense than shrimp.

I wish there was some way we could all get together.

If I would have thought about it we could have brought something to cook when we were in Hope.

Although the brisket and catfish were is good as any I have ever eaten.

When Michael comes down here we will have to " feed him up " like my neighbor says. If he don't like seafood there is plenty of other good things to eat .

We will also have to take him to the French Quarter to listen to some music and see the sights, we know a good place to eat there Cafe Mesparos or Central Grocery for a muffaletta. Both of those may be spelled wrong but I know where they are.[:D]

It is still white meat? Also do you eat the heads?

White meat ? You don't eat the heads you suck the juice and fat out and eat the tails after pealed. That's where the saying " pinch the tails and suck the heads " comes from.

Oldbuckster, you are welcome at the table anytime,

Well I'm from Chicago, so the sausage looks good. The rest is whacked. Totally wrong. Looks like a drink I mixed in college mixed with a fishtank.

Whacked? Now Kev, us southerners would consider that an insult if we didn't know how you yankee's are?[;)] That pot of crabs has corn on the cob, boiled potatoes, seasonings and crabs. You yankees don't eat corn or potatoes or lobster or king crab?[*-)]

dtel,

That would be fun to get together in crawfish season.

A few years ago I heard someone read "the Cajun Night before Christmas" and thought it was great. I've looked at it a time or two but could really use some coaching on the proper pronunciations.

I guess, but not in the same pot with cut up fruit.

Clarence, the frog legs are disgusting. I did try them fried, but couldn't get past the fact that they are frogs. On our trip to Hope to pick up the Cornwall III's dtel and I stopped to eat in N. Louisiana. I ordered a seafood platter and the platter came with six frog legs, two shrimp, 2 oysters the size of a nickel, six pieces of fried catfish and one something or another that was supposed to be a stuffed crab. I almost got sick when I saw the frog legs on the seafood platter. I am sorry, but I do not consider frogs to be seafood. I really don't like frogs and snakes, well snakes scare the heck out of me. For some reason, the frog legs are still "jiggly" after being fried.

Now, the crawfish, that's what I'm talking about.

Kev, the oranges actually have a sweet and spicy taste. I was surprised. Kind of like the watermelon and salt idea that was discussed in another thread.
