Heritage Prices Up Again?

Hi Everyone,

A fellow forum member keeps a pretty good eye on eBay prices. . .but I can't think of who it is. I'm wondering if Heritage prices have been on the upswing lately. From what I've observed, prices in the last month seem higher than normal. The price increase doesn't seem to normally occur until early spring though, not in the dead of winter. Have other members noticed higher prices of late too, or is it just me?

The prices are always up this time of year and it should continue out into spring. In the summer things start to slow down and prices drop drastically. So basically, winter is the best time for selling and summer is the best time for buying.

Thanks for verifying guys. I always sell in spring, but late January seemed a little earlier than normal to see the higher prices. Usually, I didn't remember seeing good selling prices until mid February or so. With that said, it looks like a pair of LaScalas will be on the block soon. They've sat covered in a bedroom for over a year and I'm sure someone could be using them right now. Thanks again for the quick responses.

Justin,

From my experience over the last 9-10 years, this kind of price swing is audio-wide, not just Heritage specific or Klipsch specific. I'm sure some of the more heavy-duty sellers here could be more specific, but tax return season is a great time to sell audio. I've just been seeing higher prices in the last couple weeks, which seemed a little early than what I've remembered.

Notwithstanding the suspicious zero feedback bidder that canceled bids of $1401.51 and $1250.00 to sell a pair of 1976 style C Birch Raw for $1200.00 in http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280068533468 and the pair of 1975 walnut that sold for $2000.00 Buy-It-Now (or may have bid higher) in http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280068533468

Klipschorn prices for some reason have been significantly higher the last week or so:

$3350.00 for 1980 Birch Raw http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120074740598

$3250.00 for 1976 Walnut http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130066075028

$3017.99 for 1986 Oak http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220071459262

$3750.00 for 1982 Rosewood http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170070880831

But then again, Carroll Shelby's 1966 Cobra sold at auction for $5.5 Million Saturday.

45+ Pairs of speakers now.

Corvette, in all your speaker gathering, I've not read a single post from you describing how any of them sound. Or, assuming all your khorn pairs aren't 100% identical, minimally it would be very interesting to hear the differences you've experienced in crossovers, etc. I wish you would start a thread some day.

Anybody who believes that these crazy prices on ebay auctions establish value is seriously misguided. The prices do establish more or less what they sell for on ebay.

Unfortunately, it has become apparent to me that ebay prices do IN FACT establish value--this has become PAINFULLY true (for buyers) in the collectible jazz LP market and I'm afraid the same can be said for vintage hi-fi.

That said, scouring the local papers and Craigslist can yeild some great bargains.

James,

I would disagree, somewhat. I do agree that for audio equipment, eBay usually follows the natural price cycles that come with time of year. As prices swing in private sales, those swings tend to be reflected on eBay, since it's a segment of the marketplace.

Price guides and local sales can give an idea of value, but I don't think it's even slightly misguided to consider verified eBay selling prices when determining value of an item because actual sales are involved. Right now, $3,000 seems to be the going price for decent K horns on eBay. I think it's safe to say that in general, decent used K-horns are "worth" $3,000 right now.

I'd even bet that upcoming k-horn auctions yield even higher prices in the next few weeks as this "new price" benchmark has been set. Then as supply increases because more people are trying to sell at the better price and demand decreases because tax return money is spent and audio takes a back seat to outdoor projects, prices should come back down. Again, just my opinion.

I bought the 86's in oak listed above. [:D] The only reason I decided on buying now was because they were 2 minutes from my house. Same finish and grill as my heresy II's.

I am in the process of cleaning them up, refinish, slight mods, etc. Pics pics and more pics to come. I am documenting it all.

Maybe E-bay doesn't set them, but prices usually follow their lead. Doesn't seem that long ago that you could buy used khorns between $1500. and $2500. a pair. I think $3000. on up is very high for Khorns, not that there isn't Khorns out there worth that, there are, I just think that's alot. People that are selling them know about the ups and downs of the seasons, they are more saavy than you give them credit for. E-bay really does set the price, wheter you agree or not, if they're $3000. on E-bay, that's what you are going to want for yours if your selling. Bottom line, Khorns are worth whatever price the BUYER is willing to pay............E-Bay or NO E-bay.........Show 'Em the Money.......................EH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree somewhat, as well. Values of things are determined by the price that others are willing to pay for things. Anyway, it would appear that these auctions are driven by motivated buyers within reasonable driving distances, due to the size of the Heritage speakers...and the subsequent issues with trying to arrange a safe delivery of such items. Pick up is the only safe way to go...it appears.

It is all a mater of time to do it. When my system and house addition are complete I will invite everyone here to stop by and audition everything. With the exception of Belle Klipsch and Cornwall II, I do have the entire Heritage line (12" & 15" woofer models) in just about every driver configuration ranging from 1974 to 1995. Notwithstanding those who have never heard the larger models (and consider the Forte, La Scala, & Heresy to be better), my opinion of the various models concurs with the consensus of members here that are in the know. Bigger is better and for me the 15" woofer models rule. My favorite is the Klipschorn, closely followed by the Cornwall and Chorus II. Like everyone else, I feel the La Scala lacks low end and the Heresy the best bang for the buck, both in purchase price and the cost of shipping.
