troyphoto
Well, last night, I was downloading about 20 gig of photos from CF cards to my main computer, and thought I'd watch Pink Floyd's Pulse (with RF/RB 3.5 surrounds) to kill some time while each card downloaded. When Money came on, I remembered a question I posed to Colter several years ago on one of our road trips: What are some of the best rock songs that feature a great bass line? Money has a strong bass line through the first half of the song (until the guitars take over). Queen's Another One Bites the Dust is an obvious choice. But what about others? Anyone got any favorites?
kelA
The first one that came to mind for me was: N.I.B. by PRIMUS w/ OZZY from Nativity in Black II A Tribute to Black Sabbath album. There are some very good bass lines in this song. The full version of it anyway.
Zen Traveler
"Another one bites the dust" would be my #1 pick. The bass line on "Bang a gong" by T-Rex would probably be my second favorite followed by "Money."

DrWho
Massive Attack has a really cool bass line in "Safe From Harm" that is essentially a rip from Billy Cobham's "Stratus". It's by far one of my favorite bass lines...I can't believe when I played Massive Attack for Colter that he walked straight to his CD rack and pulled out Billy Cobham and even cued the right track. It's even more insane because you gotta get about 3 minutes into the song before the bass line even kicks in! I think Billy Cobham rocks the heaze outta foshizzle awesome. "Voodoo Too" from Godsmack's "IV" album has got some really cool bass lines too....but you're going to need extension below 30Hz to fully appreciate it. "Animal" by Three Days Grace's "One-X" album has some pretty cool/deep bass too. Just about everything from Blueman group will shake the house, but it's not really good for testing a system since you really don't know what it should sound like. It's way cool to listen to though. They had a DVD of surround music they put out that sounded pretty cool. I dunno if you're into Industrial music, but I've got a whole slew of really cool bass lines in that genre. Celldweller and Massive Attack are two of my favorites. "Stella Erans" by Cirque du Soleil on their "Extrait De Dralion" album has a really cool groove. Many people I know are put off by the operatic type singing. Personally I think it just makes it all the cooler. Yes also has some pretty killer bass lines. Colter is the Yes expert, but I especially enjoy "Starship Trooper" on whatever DVD that Colter has. It literally blows your hair back (and is a really cool groove too - so not like it's just noise). michael hurd
U2, with or without you, off the Johsua Tree. Sustained low frequency energy, but does not dip that low. Animal I have become ( Three Days Grace ) sustained LF thoughout, that dips pretty low. Bother, Stone Sour, low bass ( not sure what sort of processing ) from a bass guitar, most speakers ignore it, occurs only a few chords in the whole song. magnum29
Douglas Lubahn's bass in Doors-You're Lost Little Girl Roger's Money has to be at the top somewhere on a list like this.
oldbuckster
The opening of Deep Purple's Stormbringer....wicked Rickenbacker line from Glenn Hughes.......

Great suggestions so far.And I think Colter has every YES CD ever pressed, [] so I'm not sure which one of the Starship Troopers performances you heard. DrWho
Just ask Colter to play the live DVD concert with Starship Trooper and sit in the chair directly across from his subs. You'll know what I'm talking about when it happens []

michael hurd
Soft cell, "tainted love" good bass line throughout.
Klipsched with Yamahas
The opening of FOGHAT's "Just Wanna Make Love To You" OMG, this list could well extend in to literally pages, and I am sure "THE EAR" could provide MANY, MANY selections[]
m00n
Excluding anything from Rush. I'd have to say one of my favorite bass rifts is from the band "The Scream", song "Man in the Moon". Just a mean cunky raw rift... One of those you just can't get loud enough.
garymd
IMO, the best bass line (my favorite anyway) is Phil Lesh's monster bass during the transition from Cryptical Envelopment into The Other One (and throughout The Other One). The original version is on the Grateful Dead's album Anthem Of The Sun, however there are countless live performances on CD or tape that are just awesome. I probably saw him do it live about 30 times.
ibanezhater
It's all about the groove: Queen & David Bowie - Under Pressure. Duh! Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion Primus - Tommy the Cat Isley Brothers - It's Your Thing Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused Led Zeppelin - How Many More Times A Tribe Called Quest - too many to mention... Metallica - Crash Course in Brain Surgery Metallica - Orion
