mrogge
I am looking at the THX Ultra2 System. I havent heard the system yet, but will try to track down a local dealer this weekend. I read that the bass is awesome from the 2 subwoofers and dedicated amp that are included. But what about adding a second set of subwoofers and second am? ka-1000 + ka-120 subwoofers Would 2000 watts of bass and FOUR subwoofers blow out my windows?? Room is something like 20x40, but unfortunately is more of a virtual room... as it includes half walls and adjoins the rest of my home. More of a 20x40 seating area than a room. Which isnt ideal for acoustics... but all I have to work with short of building some walls!!
Me Loves Khorns
I have not personally heard that system, but, asking if something is TOO MUCH on this forum? I didn't know there was such a thing as too much!!! PS, you may also want to ask the same question on the subwoofer part of the forum, those guys know a ton about subs there. DrWho
In all honesty, if you want clean low distortion bass, 4 subs and two amps is not too much. How do you intend to distribute them throughout the room? Implementation is very important.
MatrixDweller
Using separate subs in HT can be very useful if you want to put a sub on a certain channel (ie: center, surrounds, etc). If you're not going to do that then using 4 would probably be overkill in your room and the money would be better spent elsewhere in the system. What are the other components in the set up? CECAA850
In that size rom with openings to the rest of the house, I wouldn't think that 2 sets would be too much. Remember, headroom is your friend and the less you have to push the subs, the cleaner they'll sound.

Guest BobG
About a week ago I spoke with a dealer who had installed EIGHT subs with four amps in a THX Ultra2 system. I don't know the exact room dimensions but it was big. As you might guess, he said the bass was spectacular.
Catharsis147
Man.......that is a lot of subwoofage. Someone may correct me, but placing four subs in a room could potentially lead to phase cancellation, so you really have to be carful where you place those subs, but assuming you count for that, you should be good to go
CECAA850
If I remember correctly, 4 subwoofers is the ideal number according to a Harman whitepaper. One sub in the middle of each verticle wall.
Wrench722
I have 4 subs at around 5800 watts and love it. What I like is the sound comes from all around you and not just from one place.[H]
Moderators dtel Posted October 19, 2007 Moderators Share Posted October 19, 2007 I had heard a " pair " of them at both Indy and Colter's homes and they are Very Nice, four in one room would be almost scary ! If it were to blow you off the sofa while watching a movie it MAY be to much.
michael hurd
There is never too much, adding more units decreases excursion, distortion, improves headroom, lowers power compression, the whole 9 yards. If you have a high crossover frequency, you might have some comb filtering going on, unless all the units are co-located.
Moderators Youthman Posted October 21, 2007 Moderators Share Posted October 21, 2007 The THX website mentions using 4 subs, one on each wall. http://thx.com/home/setup/speakers/sub.html I would love to have one on each wall. They do not have to be cranked as much and you would hear bass coming from all directions. Very cool effect.
wuzzzer
Wrench722, just an off topic question but how do you like your Sony TV? My best friend just ordered the same TV as you but in the 50" size for $1599 through SonyStyle.com. They had the 60" like yours that retailed for $5000 on sale for $1799. His TV originally retailed for $4000. These are factory refurbished TVs but they have the same warranty as through a retailer and they offered free shipping and 18 month no interest no payment financing. I wish I would have known about those before I bought my JVC!
