Spongeworthy
I have recently downsized (but not downgraded []) my system and picked up a 299 from a fine gentleman on the forum. I am going to add a turntable to the system from Bluesboy, also on the forum. I was wondering what cartridges would be good to try. Am a little confused by the inputs. 1959 was a little before my time. Thanks for any recommendations.
jcmusic
Spongeworthy I am not 100% sure, but I think you need a MM cartridge with that phono. Craig at (NOS VALVES) would be the one to answer this question, I am using an AT MLa 440 with my Scott 299. I think MM was the only game in town back then, OH YEA!!! you can also use a moving iron cartridge like Grado. Jay
Spongeworthy
Thanks Jay, I am really loving this thing. I'll shoot Craig an email.

nu2toobs
Hello, I used a Dynavector 10x5 with very good results and a Denon 103r and a stepup transformer with great results.
rplace
I used a Dynavector 20X High Output on my table with my Scott and it did well. I liked it a lot. I cannot remember the back of the Scott exactly, but I do remember different inputs for the output of the cartridge. They were nothing like todays High/Low values. IIRC I tried both and not much difference.
mr_eric_s
I can second the Dynavector 10x5, a really nice sounding high-output MC cart. If you want to go the low-output MC route, you'll need a step-up.
mr_eric_s
Also, note well garymd's advice: These [scott amps] were built back when ceramic and other REALLY high output cartswere still being used so Mag 2 low is the RCA slot you want to use withtoday's carts. bluesboy
Just to help you guys with your cartridge recomondations, the TT I'm sending Spongeworthy is a Micro-Seiki DD 40 with a MA-505 tonearm. I've got two of them. On the one I'm keeping I'm using a Grado mm Reference Master.
kaiser SET say
I believe it was Seadogs Scott that we listened to my Grado Platinum on at the Goat Roper in '05;-) Best to check with WooDog as he had his ears on those Cornwalls that night[] I would think MM unless you have a good high gain MC then it's justy deciding how much you want to spend on a cart[]
Spongeworthy
Thanks for the replies and great information. I guess it is now time to look at some pricing. What do the Dyna and Grado carts run?
jcmusic
You can get the Grado's for just about any price range you want, the Dyna's are a little more costly. Jay
