Gary W. Graley
Just a bit upset, my wife was babysitting the grandson today she didn't watch him too close, but saw him turning the BIG knob on the receiver, BUT she didn't bother to see that it was turned back down again. I come home....throw in a dvd, hit the power on the receiver, BAM ! I live out in the country, but I swear they must have heard this back in the city 16 miles away!!!!! The volumne was turned up ALL the way! OUCH, my ears STILL hurt after 15 minutes!!! my system is made up of, or was made up of; Sony DA5ES Receiver Sony 685V dvd/sacd player Samsung Slimfit 30" crt HD 1080i Klipsch RF7 mains Klipsch RC7 center Klipsch SB2 surrounds Velodyne SPL1200 subwoofer So, it made one dooozzzzyy of a sound when she cranked on, YIKES and of course, my wife thinks this is a big hoot, and laughs good thing we don't have guns in the house... I'm still to shaken to even use it right now, I checked the main speakers, all seems ok, but MAN something must have gave out, I mean it was LOUD ok I'm calming down a little now, but man... colterphoto1
you've just stumbled upon an old soundman axiom, the hard way: 'always, always, ALWAYS turn the gain down before engaging any equipment' I do this religiously, it's easier on the equipment, ears, and nerves (especially when you have an audience). Gary W. Graley
Friend, you are SO right, but having that for as long as I've owned it, without incident, I've gotten too careless, of course not having a larger indicator on the dial doesn't help, all for the look I'm praying that everything will continue to work, as I truly have not the funds to replace any of the system at this time, I never buy on credit, only buy when I have all funds in hand for toys such as this, and I only buy with what I call 'leather' money, I have a side hobby that I make knife sheaths to build my discretionary fund up, took a lot of cows to pay for what I have already! Coytee
I feel for you...I've had that happen to me (with LaScalas) and it's amazing just how much that startle can make someones heart jump. Ok, so it's more of a crap your pants than a startle... [:|]
Gary W. Graley
yes indeed, a scare it was ! My wife and daughter were outside, at the other end of the house, 50 feet away through several walls and a concrete block outer wall and it startled THEM they thought I DID it on purpose to scare them, that's how loud it was! Which, in retrospect, shows just how LOUD those RF7's can pump Ears still ringing! Here's a shot of my system; G2
wuzzzer
Yep, happened to me in the past. My new Onkyo will let you set the turn-on volume from completely muted all the way up to pretty much whatever you want it to be. I have it set at -50.0dB which is a nice background music volume. That way if I turn everything on late at night it won't wake up the neighbors. []
Gary W. Graley
Now that would be a nice feature to have! All seems well today, my ears are 'almost' ring free [] G2

G2 Gary, If you think that was loud, then you need to hear multiple big Klipsch at full throttle. On a side note, do you have any pictures of your work?? I have a knife that was hand made for me by a friend about ten years ago. That friend is now dead, and I would like to have something nice to sheath it in. The biggest problem is the point end of the blade is considderably wider than the hilt end. Some sort of snapping loop would need to be employed to keep the knife secured tight and forward. kelA
Nice clean setup BTW. Who can blame the grandchild? He/she was just trying to watch some Finding Nemo. []

Guest srobak
'always, always, ALWAYS turn the gain down before engaging any equipment' This is great for analog gear... but some equipment like my HK 645 AVR don't have this option. The volume doesn't do squat until there is power applied.
Gary W. Graley
hi Roger, here is my web page, I've forsaken the fixed blade world and make just leather sheaths for folding knives, but occasionally will take on a fixed blade, depending on the circumstances; Web page Email a pic of the knife if you have one, and yep, I'm sure he was just cranking around, at the time nothing was turned on he just likes turning the knob... colterphoto1
I had something like that happen on stage once. I was 'soloing' up a drum mic and before I could check the level the drummer make a KILLER hit to his snare that knocked me over it was so loud! I was ringing for a week after that. I hope things clear up for you, but let this be a reminder to us all how much our systems are capable of in the wrong hands!

Gary W. Graley
yah, the little whipper snapper is fine, he was long gone before I got home baby sitting the grandkids, it will be something to WATCH for from now on!!! [H] G2
oldtimer
I am also impressed with the feature that automatically sets start up volume and even start up component. I had never seen this until I started using a sunfire pre/pro. I'm sure you will be looking for that little feature the next time you make a purchase gary! Gary W. Graley
Yes indeed, that sounds like a nice arrangement, and this little episode has me looking a little bit at what is out there, maybe start a slush fund for a new receiver/amp, that'll take a while to do. kelA
I think the newer 09 receivers from Denon will have a feature like this. I think it starts in the 38xx series and goes up.
IndyKlipschFan
Maybe we need a special pin numberto log in to operate our stuff? hahahahahahahahaha
Gary W. Graley
Have to do some more checking but I think it may have damaged part of my receiver, the DVD player is also an SACD player and when I go to discrete inputs I get a buzzing high pitched noise associated with that, I don't remember that ever being the case, but then I didn't play it that much...ugh!
