  1. As I understand it, 'component' signals have already been processed from digital. Think of them as analog. If any component is going to process them further (which the projector might do), it will do so whether or not you use the receiver switching. And that's what a A/V receiver does to the video - switch it.
  2. ---------------- I don't recall which lp it was but I have a Chicago lp that may be the worst recording I've ever heard. ---------------- Interestingly, one of the later Chicago tours ('77?) had the worst sound system (the unlamented 'flying stacks') and mix of any rock performance I ever heard. Someone associated with the band had a plastic ear. Wonder why no one called him on it?
  3. Colin, that implies you want to bi-amp the big Heritages with tubes on top and something silicon on the bottom. Is that what you're getting at? Is there a bi-amp mod for the Forte?
  4. I have about 30 CPUs running 24/7, and I leave the amp rack on. That does a pretty good job.
  5. Cost no object? Probably Lexicon MC-8.
  6. I have the 950 feeding separate amps (soon another Hafler XL-280, too ). I have some quibbles about certain features, but this thing should have QUALITY and VALUE written all over it. Have heard nothing but good about their amps, although in the HT environment, most people don't ask amps to do what audiophiles ask them to do. Overall, I don't see how you could lose with Outlaw. outlawaudio.com Check out the user forum, too. Yes, they're for real.

    IMAX

Hopefully the seats are better than the butt-numbing instruments of torture in the IMAX at the Mall of Georgia.
  8. I watched it Saturday as the first feature on my new big screen. Quicky calibration on the new speaker arrangement (we rotated the room 90' onto the long axis) and settled back. It was great. But to be honest, I don't recall much about the sound. I'll pay more attention on subsequent viewings (and as various new components show up). But one particular: I noticed that the overall bass of the battle with the Balrog wasn't quite as deep as I expected. More evidence that my subbie is lacking in delivery... Interesting thing about the Extended Edition. With all the additions, the "narrative pacing" has definitely changed, and now the movie feels less like a theatrical release and much more like the middle of a long story. To PJ and crew, "WELL DONE!" Watch the first Appendix Disc in its entirety. (Play All). It's fascinating!
  9. Chris, a picture is worth at least a, "What the heck?" Very nice arrangement; very pretty room. I love that you've been able to keep the light and view and still have the TV.
  10. ---------------- To me, a $4,000 TV IS expensive!! ---------------- ALL IS RELATIVE! I was replying to this phase, "cause I can't afford a plasma $12,000 TELEVISION!!!!!!!!" Relative to that number, a $4000 TV is downright cheep! I just sprung $3000 loose for the new Sony 50" RPTV. A LOT more than I ever intended to spend, but the wife and I just saw it and decided, "It's time". Now we have to tear out the fireplace...

    Some HT Pics

RILLY nice setup, CO1. What are those gold colored cone thingies? Seriously, good for you on the house! For the price of the 7-series Reference speakers, you might want to look at upgrading to some Heritage corners. Say... K-horns up front, then maybe a Belle in the center (if it will fit)? And move your RF out to Surround? The mind boggles. BTW, what's your handle on avsforum?
  12. ---------------- That isn't really correct. Digital amps drive can driver speakers using things like pulse width modulation. ---------------- Color me "skeptical". Actually, with PWM you may be feeding the signal as digital, but you'd be using the tranducer as a mechanical DAC. You still need a non-zero derivative to get an audible output.
  13. OP, I grabbed a set of these too. I have a couple pair really nice Monster plugs that I got back in the 80's before Monster became the Microsoft of overpriced wares. Designed to terminate a spade lug at right angles to the banana. Gold plated. They would probably go for $100 a pair now, if they even make them. These plugs look good enough and will make life a lot easier with all these #%^& speakers @ 4 connectors per each. Thanks for the pointer!
  14. ---------------- still mortified that I used to like BOSE ---------------- As well you should be!
  15. I believe the original concept on the speaker was that it be deployed vertically. Note the long axis of the non-Tractix horn. Accordingly, when laid on it's side the vertical dispersion should be pretty wide. I tilt mine a little by sliding a strip of wood under it, but I probably don't need to. If you have to lay it on the TV (I'd go for some other solution), get a chunk of 3/4" plywood to spread out the load. Preferably the width of the TV, to transfer the load to the outer shell.
  16. Had to at least try a decent Klipsch option. (Such is brand loyalty - like Joss Whedon.) Went for a pair of RS-3s for the surrounds. I anticipate a report here eventually...
  17. ---------------- On 11/17/2003 7:16:46 PM Chris Robinson wrote: I have a 16/9 recessed space for the display already set so RPTV wasn't an option for me. ---------------- What the heck are you talking about?
  18. I realize that you are addicted to subsonics ... but how was the movie?
  19. Forte's, especially with the Academy.
  20. Dude! This is wonderful opportunity! Upgrade your speakers and give him the castoffs. WIN === WIN
  21. A sheet of ferrous metal. (Aluminum isn't ferrous.)
  22. A fellow on the avsforum did a built-in and covered the facing wall with a dark carpet to absorb light. He left a couple extra inches of carpet inside the opening, then tucked them into the crack between the wall and the monitor. Sounds easier and better looking than trim.
  23. Radio Shack has an SPL (sound pressure level) meter for $35. With that and a way to isolate the same sound (demo CD or DVD is one way) through each speaker, you can tune the system to sound a lot better. Actually, that may be why the RC-7 sounds so good to you. There is a psycho-acoustic phenomenon where the brain will judge the louder speaker to "sound better". Not that it isn't a better speaker in the critical center position, but your "Wow!" reaction may be due more to it being louder than it should be in the system.
  24. Given the option, I'd have 7 Khorns! But unfortunately I have to stick to wall-mounts for the surrounds.
  25. Maybe you haven't been looking at TVs for the past two years? Plasma TVs are not that expensive. You can get a good one for <$4000 now. There are three kinds of rear projection: LCD, DLP, CRT. Wide range of prices. There is the LCD flat-panel type. These are still expensive and not very large, but the picture is simply amazing. There is front projector with the same technologies as rear projector. Again decent ones can be had for <$4000. Then there is the old stand-by direct-view CRT. 36" flat screen is quite good. But none of this matters to you since it will all change in two years. Look where we were (or weren't) two years ago! Try hometheaterforum.com. It has some good primers on the tech. Or extremetech.com for a more technical approach.
