  1. I ditto lynnm's thoughts on ian tyson. if you like good guitar and quasi folk lyrics you will really enjoy him. has some subtle humor in some of his songs; as lynnm said, ya gotta listen to the lyrics. best, patrick
  2. Thanks Gary. I wasn't paying enough attention when I initially posted this. I have it over there now. BTW, am I the only one that reads the new post listing for all the forums?? Best regards.
  3. oops, initially posted over in general rather than 2 ch. two questions if i can: first, i am thinking of getting a new tt, and have been told that the Rega P3 is very good. TAB also seemed to like the rega exact cart with it. anyone here have experience with the tt and/or cart??? if so, your thoughts would be appreciated. inclined on tt to buy new, and whatever i buy i will keep for a long time. second, approx 15 yrs ago my then very young daughters "helped" me all the time with the music.....and the cart on my dual cs 5000 suffered the consequences. as such, has been residing on a closet shelf. gonna pull it out and put it out in my "office" (which my wife thinks is her junk room, but that is another story). i think it had a MC cart, but not quite sure. salesguy at store where i am looking at rega says not worth putting cart in----but i am skeptical, since cosmetically and mechanically it was in excellent shape when i stored it. any recommendations as to a decent cart for it?? system in profile, and thanks for any help. patrick like 60-70's rock, earlier folk, starting to get into jazz thanks to monitoring allan s and garymd posts--thanks to them too.
  4. Actually two questions if I might: 1) thinking of getting a new Rega P3, maybe with the Exact cart. Any experience or thoughts on this? 2) have an old dual cs 5000 tt....in storage 15 yrs after my then young daughters "assisted" me and destroyed the cart. I think, but do not remember, that it was a MC ... any recommendations as to what would be suitable for it? system is in profile but basically mac ss 2105 amp, mx 110 pre...... like most 60-70's rock, earlier folk, learning a bit of jazz (thanks to all of Allan S posts). looking for early to mid 70's CW's and eventually will probably get a BB from Mr. Deneen. thank you in advance, patrick
  5. may the good Lord warmly greet him, and watch over his family. regardless of our political viewpoints, as we crawl into our warm beds tonight may we all spend some time in reflection and graditude to those who die so our families may sleep in peace. may his family find peace in what must be a very painful time.
  6. jt, absolutely no apologies needed here; we're all family. some have a few bucks to contribute, some have prayers, some have wise words and encouragement to offer after traveling down asimilar road.......we all help where and how we can at the time. the main point is that we all emote for andy, who is one of "us". best regards, patrick
  7. count me in too! i am another who appreciates andy's advice. andy, the sun is going to come up tomorrow, the next day, and the next....just keep in the fight. best regards, patrick
  8. Steve, I wasn't snoozing..........I was off working hard so I can play with these toys....eventually. Maybe next time around. Sounds like someone got a good deal. Best, Patrick
  9. .....or he could just sell that old vinyl stuff to me and not have to worry. Also, the next time you help them move it would be a lighter load for you.....such a deal.
  10. Allan, I have always enjoyed your informative posts on jazz and other subjects, especially since i know very little about these subjects...but am trying to learn. That said, don't you think it might have been better to title your post in a less personal manner?? I am fully aware of the different personalities---or what we see of them--- on the forum and have read many of the posts with kelly and paul, guy and paul, some recent with you and paul, etc. I think all of us empathize with your send of frustration on certain subjects, but i think you cheapen yourself with the full frontal assault of the title. Just my opinion, which, like certain parts of my body, may stink. Remember, no one can drive you nuts if you don't let them into your head.
  11. Don, you may want to listen to it at different times of day to see if you have a different reaction. I am new to Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Tina Brooks......and still trying to develop an understanding....but i have found that i definately "relate" to it later in the day. just my experience, patrick
  12. Gary, I have only been around a few months, but I have always enjoyed your posts. You always seem to have a relatively balanced and helpful viewpoint on most things. However, I will also admit to a bit of envy (non-phallic) of the equipment that you have been acquiring......but hey, here's to you! Patrick
  13. so why are we feeding on ourselves?? what is the purpose in insulting each other and chasing members away?? this thread starts on the subject of personal attacks, dale chimes in and suddenly gets dumped upon.....is the irony lost on anyone?? granted, and as i have said in posts asking for help (some with no response whatsoever), i don't know squat about audio...but i am here trying to learn. As naive as it sounds, i assumed others were here to share what they know, exchange ideas, and learn abit as well. Tom Brennan, unless our collective fecal matter is aromatic, i do not think it serves us well to chase people like dale away. patrick mccarthy
  14. gary, did you click over to his ebay store and then on left side hit bannana plugs...shows he has sets of 8, 20, 24 and appears to be same item.?????
  15. I also find the heads-up notices to be helpful as well as educational. Even if I can't afford the item, can't get past the WAF, etc, I still like to know what you guys have learned over the years.....and the discussions some of these ebay or audiogon postings generate here are helpful to us less smart and suave neophytes. sure, if it is something i want, there is a bit of a jealous reaction on a viscereal basis where i say " why is he/she telling everyone else about my 'secret' find?"....but that is the human fault in me , because it is neither mine nor is it secret, it is just me being "greedy", which is not necessarily a bad thing. This forum has a lot of class individuals who inform others, and by the same token also will say, "hey, it is you and me bidding dude, may the best one win" or else" you go for it bro, i will wait til next time....i already have one, hope you win and enjoy", etc. I am not trying to be preachy here, nor do I think everyone has to march to my perceived code of conduct, but I will always try to treat the others here as I would like to be treated just my thoughts, patrick ps. particularly helpful are the posts about the weird sellers who may cause us only headaches as we chase our dreams.
  16. piranha, thanks for the heads-up on the amp. since it is out here i think i will bid on it.....but if i win it will have to go to craig for a look-see. also, if you come to sb to look at the single khorn, give me a call and i will buy you lunch. patrick
  17. jim, whereabouts are you??? i'm in calif.
  18. ironically, i am getting "back into " vinyl after having several nearly identical episodes with my then young daughters, replacing several cartridges, etc. if you or other forum members are looking to part with mint lp's from the late 50's, 60's and 70's i am ready, willing and able. (don't mean to hijack your thread) thanks, patrick
  19. overall condition of the vinyl seems to be the determining factor in how fast they go. please post a list of albums and condition, remembering it is probably best to be conservative in evaluating the condition. best of luck, patrick
  20. congrats, and ditto all the above. best regards, patrick
  21. been there, done that....and my advice(remember that free advice is worth what you pay for it)is to ENJOY it while you can. it may sound weird because you are tired, trying to balance everything, etc, but these days will be gone ohhhh so fast. i've got five, two in high school and three in college.......but it still seems like it was only a short time ago that we brought them home from the hospital as newborns. i thought i was going nuts when they were little; wish i knew then that i couldn't control any of it and that i was just along for the ride (and to pay the bills). stuff you scream about or pull your hair out about now will make you laugh in a few short years.......better if you can laugh now like max and the dr/vomit incident.....but 'tis always easier to laugh when you are not the recipient of the bodily fluids exiting any orifice. ah, life...embrace it today guys....'cuz ain't no telling what we're going to find tomorrow. don't get me wrong , love my kids and my life, but damn it goes by so quickly. also, just to give you something to look forward to, remember the old saying: little girls, little problems; big girls, bigger problems. (hormonal roller coasters, horny boys-obviously a redundancy-knocking at your door or lurking in the shadows, stories you hear when the girls are home for the holidays and talking excitedly with each other thinking you are in the other room, etc, boyfriends with tatoos and metal in their lips, ears and who knows where else.......you get the idea).point being, enjoy 'em while you can, and try to protect them from some of the bad stuff out there--but prepare them for it too. sorry if i got carried away, patrick
  22. .......but dave, so where are you going to put the turntable??? looks great. thanks for the vinyl, patrick
  23. gentlemen, please.......let's all remember that we are here for a shared interest in audio. some of you know alot more than the rest of us, some have more money and toys than others, some have a business interest in addition to their personal pleasure, some (like me ) are trying to suck up information and others are willing to share it. we all have opinions and armpits (and other orifices as well) which, depending on the day and our mood, may or may not be offensive to others. none-the-less, we are all entitled to our opinions and personal preferences, as well as our right to express those thoughts, even though others may find them offensive. however,IMHO, we should not be expressing those thoughts in an offensive manner. restated, there should be no need for us to publicly insult each other; if you absolutely have to get pissy with someone here, send them an email......and even then i would urge you to utilize the same type language you would like to receive. remember, we should be able to disagree without being disagreeable. patrick ( and the handle refers to my date of birth, not any status i'm likely to achieve in the near future)
  24. thank you, appreciate the patience as i learn this stuff. patrick
  25. Guy, i have a mx 110 as well and have the same questions as wolfram (except i am willing to switch all the tubes). thank you for the input, but what does it mean when you say it might be microphonic? thanks for any guidance, patrick
