  1. 1. Yes. But you will hear it much better at 2-300 feet. 2. There is NO F****** WAY YOU CAN EVER ACHEIVE THIS. I try to follow the "path of least resistance" rule; and it makes it easier.
  2. Yes, the Heresy Is will work just fine for surrounds, or even a center. (Same/ similar parts). Any Timbre difference can be tamed with an EQ. (Likely the Heresy Is are a bit hotter in the mids versus the Forte). They would also work well for surrounds. Another option might be a KV4 or KLF C7. These won't match the Forte perfect (KLF is for the KLF 20s/30s; KV 4 is for the C3/C4s). Again; with EQ, a nice result can be had. (See my siggy). Good Luck.
  3. Try wiggling the DIN plug with music playing softly. If that channel cuts in and out while wiggling; you need a replacement DIN plug. These are found on Ebay and I think Klipsch may sell them also..... If wiggling that connector does not make the sound come back/ cut in and out....... Next step is removing the plate amp and inspecting it. Look for something burned or crispy.......
  4. I got to hear Big Cliff's KG 5.5s and Fortes (4 speakers in a huge basement). It sounded great. I am not 100% certain of the exact configuration of his setup. (I also believe it has changed now). Maybe he can chime in....... Also, Since one is the other's bigger brother; I would imagine timbre match would not be an issue.
  5. [:|] Any one who has measured them or even run a simulation using Thiele Small parameters knows they begin to roll off a bit above 100Hz and are 3dB down by around 60Hz, as I said. Did you look at my avatar? I currently have 8 Heresys dating from mid 60s to early 80s. I got my first pair in 1972 and still have them. I have had others, including a pair of 84s I got rid of because of the difference in the midrange driver. You might try looking up the specs. The specs for the Heresy III give the frequency response as 58 to 20kHz +- 3dB, somewhat better than the earlier versions. In other words, the 3dB down point is around 60Hz. And so have I for many, many years. They are quite adequate for a lot of music. But as I said, there are some applications where you will need a sub, And if you need a sub, there is no reason to chase after extra bass out of the Heresys, at least in terms of frequency response. You aren't going to get much more in a sealed box design without losing efficiency or going to a different box design, but then they wouldn't be Heresys. You could use a woofer with higher Xmax so you could play louder down low before reaching the mechanical limit, or one with better power handling capability so you could play louder down low before you reached the thermal limits. But if you are running them in a typical home environment this isn't necessary. It is already hard to stay in any reasonble size room with them when they are cranked anywhere near their limit. There are lots of modifications that have been suggested on this site over the years. Whether they are improvements or not is in the ear of the listener. I have tried some of them. If you want my opinion, you will have to be more specific. The one modification I would suggest for Heresys with paper in oil capacitors is to replace them. I use metalized polypropylene capacitors. You might want to use something else. I won't go into detail about it because it has already been discussed thoroughly in other threads and this thread is about woofers with a sub. Yes and yes. And I even measured them before and after. Couldn't find a significant difference. Of course, I had to rely on memory. There is no way to A-B test the same speaker before and after a modification at the same time. And A-Bing two different speakers, one modified and one unmodified, won't yield reliable results because no two speakers are identical to start with. Again...... You have your points and beliefs; and I have mine. Agree to disagree on everything but the caps. Changing them makes a nice little improvement. (And the specs; which I already said what I was getting at in my original response. Excuse me for not being 100% technically accurate ).[:|]
  6. First; STOP. If you can afford K Horns; you can afford $10 on a cheap pair of speakers. Experiment with those instead of K Horns........ PLEASE! [] Second; Welcome to The Forum. Third; I would try using the Pre Out from Left and Right to the Left and Right "in" on the HK stereo receiver. (You want the K Horns as mains?) This is not true 9.2. (But it is 9 speakers working). True, accurate 9.2 has specific info (spatial; low and high also, not just rear/ side/ front/ center). To get true 9.2; I am pretty sure you need......... A 9.2 Receiver ...... (I have seen someone on this Forum doing 11.2; but I have no idea how good or accurate this is)....... Fourth; I do not think K Horns with anything but Heresy or Cornwall or K Horns will sound great. I would use the K Horns with the 2 Channel HK for 2 Channel Stereo....... (My Opinion)...... Good Luck.
  7. $250 for decent shape Forte I or II is a nice price. Excellent all around speakers...... [Y]
  8. I will add that to me; you still have too much hooked up. I would disconnect the tape deck and whatever else is connected to the receiver. (CD player; etc). Connect an FM antannea and see it you get reception. Is there a buzz/ humm with the speakers connected; playing FM? If it is one side; swap speakers as mentioned. If the problem moves to the other side (same channel/ different speaker) it is the amp. If FM works fine with no issues; try a peripheal. (CD player; etc). If the tape deck causes an issue at the "tape in" jack, try the cd player there. In the same way; you are eliminating possible causes. (If both cd player and deck give an issue on "tape in" RCA jacks; your RCA jack is hosed for that connection..... (As menttioned; may in fact be the case). Good Luck.
  9. OP, you can probably find Heresy I cabs in pretty good shape for around $50. I have seen them posted here several times...... Good Luck.
  10. No.That is not what you said. Why would I think you meant other than what you said? The way you restated it, perhaps more so in a vague way. The way you originally stated it, no. In any case, Heresys require a subwoofer for many applications no matter what you do to them. And if you need a subwoofer, there is not much of a reason to chase a little extra base response out of them. Anyone who owns Heresy Is and is familiar with the speaker and their specs knows they start to really drop off around 60hz. Do you own a pair or did you just look up the specs? There are many Heresy owners who run them 2 channel without a sub...... I often do so still in 2 channel mode. (Depends if I am doing Classic stuff like The Doors or Everly Brothers, no sub needed, compared to Cradle of Filth; which benefits from a good sealed sub). The cabinet resealing does make an improvement; so we disagree. There are other improvements to do; are they also not worht it? (Moray has some great ideas on the mid horns and Groom has probably done it all!) I believe Groomslakearea as well as Moray and I am sure others that have done this and it made a difference. Chasing the "little extra bass response" out of them was worth it for me and others who have done it. Once again, do you own a pair? Have you tried resealing them? Have you done an A-B test? Even RF7s benefit from a sub for HT; and they pound bass compared to a Heresy.
  11. I just upgraded to HK's flagship receiver from 2005-2007. (AVR 7300). http://www.amazon.com/Harman-Kardon-AVR-7300-Surround/dp/B0002KU7N8 110 wpc X 7 and 125 wpc in stereo mode....... (Remember these are actually conservatively rated. It actually benches ~20 wpc higher)..... It weighs 56 friggin pounds! (It BARELY fits in the entertainment stand. 1/2" taller and I'd be screwed) This thing is every bit as good as my AVR 635 but has more breathing room at high volumes. WOW....... Cosmetically; it is near mint. I am waiting to see if the original remote will be found. (I have the multiroom remote). I just won another remote (almost identical) from Ebay; so either way.......... (The AVR 635 will be going to my relative who fried his receiver in the basement with the recent rainstorm)....... Woo Friggin Hoo!!!!!! The next upgrade has to be seperates. (Probably Emotiva). []
  12. Update...... The HK AVR635 will beat the pants off of an HK 430 with maximum volume (and clarity). The AVR 635 is hooked to my Klipsch Heresy Is. The HK430 is currently running the JBL L36s. I remember my Dad having to dial it back often with the volume (I did not know why; I was 6) I think it is related to what typr of music; (JBLs seem to love the classic stuff; not as much with more recent rock; like AC/DC for example. They get a bit shrill and distorted when trying to approach volumes the Heresy Is do easily. I did an A-B test)..... Me thinks the Heresy Is are able to just "give it" on the volume and clarity......... JBL L36s in the bedroom will be great with the HK430; but not reach nearly the same volume with clarity. (Is it the speakers; the receiver or both?) I honestly need to A-B the speakers with the HK 430 to find out. (I suspect the JBLs are not quite up to the task)...... I am happy with my budget bedroom speakers...... I just know which speaker is truly an *** KICKER (with a sub)........ Long live Heresy....... I will NEVER sell them! I am enjoying the comparisons though!
  13. My Dad's Sansui 9090db with JBL L100s was a very dynamic setup. It was impressive then and those components are still sought after to this day for a reason. I just last night got my HK430 connected to the JBL L36s I refoamed 2 days ago...... (My attempt to get something that sounds similar; for nostalgic reasons). The result? Sweet. BEYOND SWEET. (I even A- B tested the speakers versus a Pioneer VSX D606S that I got for a family member for cheap.) The HK wins out on SQ; and Volume; even though the Pioneer is rated much higher....... (Sorry; It blew the Pioneer AWAY)........ I agree with Russ; the right seperates setup can be up on another level; BUT...... The article does have merit. They were not trying to pack HDMI, and Digital Coax; Toslink; SVideo; 3D and 1080p processing; etc; etc into a receiver. There are some really great SQ receivers from that era. I am fortunate to own one of them for 2 channel bedroom listening.......
  14. No, they start rolling off a bit above 100 Hz and are about 3db down by 60 Hz. Technically you are correct. You obviously understand that I meant they start seriously dropping off below 60hz. My point was and is still valid. []
  15. Sounds like a good easy improvement. Can't wait to see what else you try......
  16. As always; Groom is spot on here....... I will also add that each person can have some sort of emotional bias towards a certain speaker line based on experiences with them. I will never sell my Heresy Is; even if I get Palladiums; I would still keep the Heresy Is I own; because of sentimental valus and because of the kick butt speaker these little guys are. Since I do not own Forte I or IIs and got the Heresy Is instead..... You could argue that I am slightly biased. (I will say every Klipsch speaker I have heard sounds really good or better).
  17. As usual; Youth is spot on. I believe other sub brands such as Epik; Emotiva; SVS; Hsu and Velodyne (some Velo stuff sucks) are all better values than comparably priced Klipsch subs. I agree about the RSW15 though...... OP; Good Luck, and post pics of your new gear when you get it!
  18. I'm with you on this one. I can't get over how hot my Onkyo gets. I had the same with the TX SR 702; but it never failed or even showed a hiccup. I have my PC in close proximity to my receiver (streaming movies to the 52" LCD). I ran a 120mm PC fan externally running off of the PCs power supply. I left it on top of the Onkyo. (I still have it on top of the HK). It was never so hot it could burn you after I started doing this........
  19. Congrats! Cecaa is right on regarding disposible income...... Not sure what gear you have; but whatever you have been longing for; get it in the next 3-4 months....... It truly is a great experience raising children. Congrats again......
  20. Well Cliff; I just hooked them up in the living room. Could not wait...... Th HK430 is awesome. I can't go past 35% without it getting too loud for the neighbors. (They are home). The speakers sound excellent. If anything; the highs are not as defined as the Heresy Is; but the thumping compensates. These will do VERY nicely in the bedroom (eventually in a 2 channel room). And no sub needed....... It is great to hear the fruits of my labor........ Thanks to all for your help! []
  21. What you are doing is in effect two 2channel stereo speaker setups. I do not think I would prefer it; (I also do not generally like 5.1 stereo on my receiver). For music; it is 2 channel all the way; but if you like it; that's what counts! My .02 Enjoy!
  22. (triple post) Do not know wth was happening earlier.....
  23. Thanks Cliff. The glue should be dry after 24 hours. I have to rearrange the bedroom to do this; so I am likely looking at Friday evening or Saturday sometime. I also ordered the foam rings that mount above the outer rim of the surrounds. (This will clean up the appearance significantly). I will say I am impressed with the construction of the cabinets; in particular the ports and how they are installed. (Just tapping the woofers produces bass..... kinda cool)....
