  1. Not a huge fan of the big bands, but here's a cd you may want to check out, it's the soundtrack for the movie Kansas City, directed by Robert Altamn and put out in 1996. They used a band put together for the movie, and from what I've heard made an excellent stab at the Kansas City big band sound. I play it quite a lot.
  2. Ok. I think I've got everything so far. But with two seperate amps how do you adjust for what must be slight differences between the outputs fromt the amps. I mean the two monos cann'y be exactly the same physically and/or the output tubes may wear at different rates. Is this accounted for by simply tweaking the pre? I mean I wondering how they are kept in phase, I guess would be the right term.
  3. Sure that's the Msystery Model 4000, or is it The Broken Frame 3000? I always the two confused.
  4. Hated Big Band music, but now I like some, not all of it.
  5. If you're going neutral a lot of people on this forum like how NAD matches up with Klipsch (their known for a neutral/flat/laid back type of approach to component building. Onkyo and Denon also get a lot of mentions. Try a search in the upper right hand corner and you should uncover a wealth of information. Let su know how it turns out.
  6. Ok I'm back from shopping. Some of your suggestions I had, some the stores didn't have. Here's what I ended up with: Tchaikowsky "1812" put out by Telarc They Might Be Giants "Apoll0 18" Dido "No Angel" Gov't Mule " The Deepest End" (vol. 1&2) Josh Groban "Josh Groban" Jet "Get Born" Damien Rice "O" Donna the Buffalo "Positive Friction" Asylum Street Spankers "Asylum Street Spankers" Red Elvises "Live" (2 cd set) Rachael Yamagata "Happenstance" FYE "Blues" sampler (free!) Jennifer Warnes "The Well" Fini had suggested Jennifer Warnes "Famous Blue Raincoat" but I counldn't find it. Too bad because here's what a reviewer had to say about it: "An outstanding collection Leonard Cohen tunes was originally released in 1987. It remains as an audiophile's dream, as the recording is generally regarded as one of the best engineered ever. Many cite this disc as a benchmark to really put a stereo system to the test. Not to mention the fact that the performances are brilliant. Features the guitar work of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan & includes the Cohen staples 'Bird on a Wire', 'Joan of Arc (with Cohen duetting), and seven others." My apologies to you Rick, I thought Rock Please was a good stab at your handle. Ok fini, you can no longer claim your suggestions are being ignored by folks on this forum. I bought four out five. We'll soon have a good look into the strange and complicated mind of the fini via his music. Besides who could resist a group called Aslyum Street Spankers. Additional suggestions are welcome. My problem with music is I'm not up on a lot of the current stuff due partly to my loathing of commercial fm radio. Of course even when I catch something I like, most of the time I have no idea whose actually singing it, or write the name down on a little piece of paper and promptly lose it. After I've played these new tunes for a few days I'll start a new thread and post my experiences. Thanks to everybody on this one. A fun thread that helps me and gives others on the forum some musical ideas. Why I think I'll give myself a pat on the back.
  7. I don't see why you would. Your connections coming out of the pc will probably dictate how you hook it up to the receiver. If you've got standard rca jacks coming out of the sound card at the back of the pc, I would just plug them into the AUX input on the reciever. You don't indicate if the receiver is tube or solid state. Tubes run hot, and some brands of both types are vented from the bottom. If that is the case I would put a piece of wood betweeen the speaker and the receiver, or otherwise elevate it slightly. Oh yea, and run the plug from the reciever to the surge protector your computer is hopefully hooked up to.
  8. All right, great suggestions and keep them coming. I'll be going to Worst Buy and Tower Records, no really good record store near me, so I need a wide selection in case they don't have all the ones your suggesting. Two questions, RockPlease, what is an FYE store? I'm interested in the sampler since you indicate its mixed really well, and Colin do you know of any really well recorded Orbison? The two I've got are supposed "remasters" from his earlier days, and we all know how bad recorded some of the earlier cd's were.
  9. I'm a French (via Canada), born in the USA and I spit on you. Phew! Right now on the changer I'm playing Beau Soleil from Cajun country and Edith Piaf's La Vie en Rose". Have I mentioned that I spit on you! You Anglo Saxon Dogs listen to Ute Lemper if you must (she's also on the changer). Ptewee! Ptewee! (tongue in check lest I offend) Oh, tongue. Wit a little garlic, sauteed in a cream sauce. Merde is incredibale, No?

  11. 1812. I like that idea. Got a lot of Marley (my ex hung with him when he had a beach band in Negril (bye the bye, the tine I saw him was the best concert I ever experienced and I was at Woodstock!). George Harrison, don't own him great suggeston. John is that a goof on me or the world's longest name for a rock band? Money's getting hot in my pocket need more suggestions.
  12. tbrennan, what's your home address? I haven't showered lately and I'm getting a little ripe. Sure I believe in "once a week, whether you need it or not", but it's not Sunday yet so I thought I'd stop by for a visit. Got any food in the fridge? Got any "Hermit's Hermits" playing on the the horns? What's your wife look like? Car's busted, can I borrow yours? I'll spring for beer, got $5 you can lend me? What's your views on conjugal sex in prison? I'll PM you.
  13. I've hit a horrible imbalance between gear and and the reason for buying it. Lately the gear has won. Got a litle coin jingling in my pocket. Need to address this imbalance. I listen to blues, rock, new wave, world, reggae, jazz, etc. Posting this here, because the DVD, Music section is kinda moribund and focused mostly on films. Actually it should be moved up to the Home Audio group. My apologies. OK. Want to buy 10 new cd's this Sunday. Suggestions anyone?
  14. Go slow with DIY is great advice. This last winter I had to pay an auto mechanic $100 plus to handle a heater problem I was having. Turned out when I DIY'd a thermostat change I actually (can you belive this) installed the darn thing backwords. Auto mechanic 101 and I flunked bad. On an audio note my first attempt at building an acrylic case cover for my cd transport turned out only so, so due to not taking it slow and measuring twice. Re your ham radio my brother-in-law has a box of tubes from his grandfather's ham setup. If your strapped for a tube PM me and I'll see if he's got what yo need.
  15. In most communities landscapers have to be licensed. At the very least file a letter with the licensing agency over your problem. Anybody smart enough to check on their licensing won't hire them and the landscapers know this. It may not resolve your problem or it may. If they don't have a license and they are required to, burn them bad. I'm a painting contractor. I know the for hire business and I tell you never, POSITIVELY , NEVER pay more then half up front with the rest at completion to your, not their, satisfaction. Most contractors, like most people, (used car salesmen exempted) are honest, but there are also some very evil ripoff artists out there that could care less. Watch out for them and hold back money until it's done right. Am I repeating myself, no final dough until it done. Got it everybody, not just mOOn. (best advice I ever offered on this forum)
  16. A lunch bucket democrat named James M. Hanley. Irish undertaker turned pol, elected in the Johnson landslide of '64. Only dem ever elected from Syracuse except for a one termer when Teddy Roosevelt's Bull Moose Party split the upstate Republican vote early in the century. Superb guy, sadly passed away last year. Also a big city pol by the name of Ed Towns from Brooklyn. Last saw him at a prayer service shortly after 9/11. I was working Brooklyn Heights that day helping a friend of mine running for Borough President (9/11 was primary day in New York). Saw the second tower get hit and watched both of them go down. Horrible sight to see. Watched the overpressure blow people out the windows as the towers came down. Anyway the primary was cancelled so I went back up a couple of weeks later to help out. Couldn't campaign obviously, so all we did was go to funerals for firemen and police my friend knew, and attend community prayer meetings. Ed's grooming his son to replace him but his District demos are trending hispanic and I'm not sure what will happen when he retires. Anyway, way off the off topic topic. Henry is one of only three or four Dems in the House (Dave Obey comes to mind) that the Republicans are positivly scared of, because they are so damn good at what they do. On health care alone nobody can touch him. A wonk will superb political skills a deadly combination when the idealogues of any stripe try to run crummy bills through the Body.
  17. Worked as an aid on Capitol Hill for 8 years, yes for Democrats and proud of it. That's not my point. Even his enemies (and there's a bunch of them) on the other side never, and I mean never, faulted his work ethic, competance and integrity. One of the most sterling examples of the "best and brightest" this country has produced.
  18. Never saw him live but if you watched any tv over the last forty years or so you would have seen him. Every time I saw him a smile would come across my face and I although all only partial to his music I always, instantly felt better. One person I would have truly loved to have met.
  19. Ok thanks I get it so far. You must have a pre, not direct cd to monos. However, I still see a lot of room for mischief in signal transference. For example, my Scott 299 has bias controls to I presume provide allowances for the varience in the different tubes and output transformers. With two physically seperate amps how do you keep them in phase? And what's all this tuff about set/push/pull/triode are these just different ways of doing the same thing? I know it sounds a little dorky but every time I see a picture of these things I reminded of some sort of simplified Rube Goldberg machine invented by Jules Verne. You know, sort of Victorian looking. Still scrathing my head.
  20. I keep reading about monoblocks and seeing pictures of them in 2 Channel but have little concept of what they actually are and what they do. I presume they are two dedicated amps that send seperate signals one to each speaker. If so, how does each of them get the signal to to each speaker at the exact same time. Is some sort of preamp needed? How can they stay in phase with the slight variences two seperate mechanical devices must produce? Why do people like them over an integrated amp? See what I mean. Total newbie in this area and need some basic instruction not for a purchase but just to educate myself.
  21. A few thoughts. Creativity and social change tend to come in bursts. We are probably just in a trough concerning widely popular well known groups with good musical chops. We may also have conditioned ourselves to only hearing the greatest growing up in the era of the rock gods, while conviently forgetting how much dreck was out there at the same time. Remember bubble gum music? There are still a ton of people out their creating music, sure most of its junk, but there are still finds to be made. Perhaps we are really coming in to the global village McLuhan talked about and the best music is really just down the street from us either physically or on the web. There's still a lotta local groups that are well worth checking out at your local music venue. Gotta agree with the universal disgust of music lovers over the scum who run radio. At least there's still a few good college stations. Economically music lovers are locked out the broadcst biz which is now a defacto monopoly. Unless some really fanantic music loving billionaire comes along and buys a few radio stations were screwed. The mom and pop radio stations that catered to us in our youth are all gone and any one trying to start one without a ton of dough is locked out.
  22. Thanks Tom that's atrick I needed to know. For the Scott case I'm going to use my drill press to spell out HH Scott in the venting area. Hopefully with tips like yours and a bit more patience I'll have a cool looking case. Will post pics when it's done.
  23. A mild universal solvent is mineral spirits. Not sure if it will work in this case but guaranteed not to etch or discolor your monitor. It may leave a film but that can be cleaned off with Windex. Also consider wd40 followed by Widex but do not use Goofoff or anything like it. Goof Off will hurt plastic. Pure ammonia may also work but try in hidden spot first. I'm a painting contractor and the above are a regular part of my arsenal for spills and other various problems.
  24. Given the recent consolidation of sections in Home Audio (I approve of the streamlining by the way) it seems there's enough room to set up a parts bin for Fourm users to share their odd bits of this and that. For example I have several tubes someone might want, but I could also use a couple of switches and a knob for my Panasonic SA-5500 receiver. I know this happens informally in various parts of the forum but putting it all under one roof might be handy. Obviously I don't envision this as a place for selling stuff. I see it being used primarily for folks to share and get a little more life out the various bits of electronica lying around or using up good stuff left on "hanger queens" (good name for a rock band by the bye). Music too but no burned copies allowerd. Whadda ya thunk?
  25. Now that's a thought. Little neon lights to bring out the tubes. Wonder how I'd wire them in without blowing up the amp. Your idea about sanding seems right on. Thanks.
