  1. My recollection is since this is a constant coverage horn, it needs a certain equalization that your K400 doesn't use (or vice versa?). As such, unless the passive is designed to accomodate this for the horn, you might be driving a Ferrari....but only have access to 1st gear (may not be getting all the performance available) Bad analogy...because if I was forced to drive a Ferrari, I'd probably WANT to be in 1st gear, driving nice & slow so everyone gets a good chance to see who's driving. (unfortunately, it would probably be my wife driving, therefore getting all the stares while they're all thinking "who's that moron she's with???") oh well...
  2. Technically, the 510 atop a lascala is a Klipsch approved application... note the crossover parameters that Roy designed for it...
  3. Compared to these other boneheads on the forum? I just keep my ears open and try to listen & file it away....so I'm higher on the scale of regurgitation than I am on technical skill.
  4. I suppose. But I don't know that the passive you have is correct for it. (I'm not that technical minded) roy designed a passive for it I have a schematic for it somewhere, can't yet find it. Rigma (Marion) took the design, built them.....he's an OCD engineer (are there any other type? lol) He spent $3,000 IN PARTS ALONE to put these together. Weighed like 40 pounds each. The next year, Roy came out with the TAD's, redesigned the passive.... Rigma spent another $3,000 to alter his crossover.... I simply went to my active and changed parameters and I was done. Found the passive. Those are Rigma's knobby knees, not mine but, gives you an idea of the "no costs spared" scale of his. Ms. Valerie (PWK's widow) had a bass bin in her house, the passive for it was stuffed inside the speaker. 510K69.PDF
  5. If I recall correctly, Roy has told a story about 2006 (if I have the correct year) some Boneheads went to the Factory and visited. He shared the Jubilee with them. He used an active crossover and biamped it. They all loved what they heard, but muttered that it had to be passive before they'd consider it. The following year, is when I went to one of these gatherings. Roy spent time getting it dialed in so he could use a passive. This is when Mike & myself bought a pair and essentially, what kick-started us boneheads buying the (what is now called) Underground Jubilee's. Roy shook his head with confusion.... he's muttering loud enough for us (or me anyway) to hear... "I just don't get this....I play the speaker for the crowd....they all say they'd want it with a passive. The next year, I go to a lot of work, creating a passive.....and these boneheads start buying it BUT, what to they order to go with it? an active...." Here's picture of speaker he played for us while it was in his chamber getting the passive dialed in. (I thought this was a pretty cool picture)
  6. So you don't have a 510 itself? If you want to pay shipping both ways, I have a 510 laying about... no driver attached. I also have TWO K69's laying about (I replaced them with the TAD drivers) I SHOULD also have an EV-DX38 lying about...I think it's in the closet. Actually, all these parts should be in the closet. Wouldn't be what I'd call inexpensive, which is why I mention you paying both directions, but I'd be happy to ship some/all of that to you so you can give it a trial run. You'd need some XLR wires to bring signal into the Dx and some XLR wires, probably converting to RCA to get it out of the DX and into your amp. So there are some busy-body issues you'd have to tidy up to get things talking to each other. You could do one side with the 510, leave the other side stock.... probably wouldn't take you more than 3 minutes to pick your jaw back up off the floor and then the panic begins..... "I must have.....where can I find..... here's wife, kids....oh heck, here's Fido the dog...." Yeah.... it's a family wrecker.
  7. If you have an original single piece LaScala, you could cut the top off, make a box for the K510 and set it on top. If you have 2-piece units, it's even easier.
  8. K69 the best driver? Nope. Roy later came out with a profile (on the K402) using the TAD-4002 driver. Good luck finding those (with the original BE diaphragms). I have no idea how the new driver on the Heritage Jubilee sounds, I've never heard it. I presume, but don't know, that "anyone" can buy it however, it won't have the phase plug that Roy designed for it (or so that's my understanding). Would it work without an active? Yeah... it would but if you want to maximize the sound you are working so hard to find, why not do it right from the git-go? The active allows you to dial in appropriate delay, dial in the drivers (probably more accurately than a passive) Roy has inserted a PEQ inside the active profile that has a -7 db PEQ at 148 Hz. This is a direct assault on the sidewall resonation that the (older style) LaScalas suffer from. It will tidy up some of that muddiness.
  9. Your scale of sound (not the loudness but how "big" it sounds) will get bigger, the coherency will also increase because now you have a 2-way not a 3-way and it's easier to integrate the two verses three drivers. The absence of the other crossover point is not insignificant. Beware....you will then hear about the K402 atop the LaScala bin and soon after this, you will begin your quest to find a used pair of K402's (good luck) you will beg, plead.....you will offer your children, you will offer your wife, you will offer your cat....you will however, surely keep your dog or we will then know you are serious. You'll finally give in to temptation, buy 402's and wonder why you waited so long.
  10. Set it (the K510) on top. Disconnect your crossover. Get an active. Make sure you have two amps so you can biamp. Apply the attached PEQ's to the active and sit back, enjoy. This was actually dialed in by Roy using the EV-DX38 so those parameters are literally, plug & play. If you got a different brand, the values might be slightly different. 11. Too funny.... maybe we can reciprocate... my wife abhors mine.... so we can just wait to see who goes first. By the way, have you checked your brakes lately? I've had a list of people here to hear them. People (typically guys but had a couple here twice) Atlanta, Athens, Oak Ridge, Nashville, Staton Island, Lexington, Maryland, Charlotte and Tallahassee are some of the longer distances. Charlotte, Tallahassee, Lexington, Nashville, Athens and Atlanta specifically drove here to give a listen, some of the others happened to be in area and took advantage.
  12. you can buy me a new pair and i will give you mine. they are a bit smaller so should work. i'd call that a win/WIN with me getting the capital WIN. dont forget, horns are honky, you just read ut again on the internet so it must be true. i live in greenback and have an underground pair, not the newer heritage version...you are welcome to swing by for a lusten (thats a cross between listen and lustung for them). honest offer if interested
  13. @Chief bonehead Roy slobbers like a puppy dog when he sees a roll of 14g wire on sale at Radio Shack. Yeah, I know.....Radio Shack.....gone but, don't tell Roy. Don't want to shatter his hopeful dream.
  14. ^^^ This. You'd be amazed at what these/those guys can do. At least, I was. Let me put it this way.... knowing what I know about what I know..... if I wanted a pair of these and I had the funds to drop on them, game is over. Everything else is just a minor detail and challenge to iron out, as opposed to being a deal breaker. Piano mover says no go? Call another. Call some Navy Seals that are recently retired....Keep in mind, the speaker should be in two halves. With a furniture dolly, I moved mine out of house to Florida when I worked down there, moved them back, moved them from upstairs to basement. (only one flight of stairs) If your logistics require them to be physically carried verses a furniture dolly, then it does become more of a challenge but nothing that can't be overcome with some thought, maybe some cash and some determination.
  15. I don't know if any of the 75th's are available. I presume other than badging, they will be identical to the non-anniversary version (note, NOT the "underground" version) Point being, if the Anniversary units are not available, you can still get (sonically) the same thing, just less bling and less $$. Having heard the 'underground' version for 10-15 years, I'll say that they are the most outstanding thing I've ever heard. I've not heard the new Heritage version, Roy won't let me as he says I slobber like a puppy dog.
  16. Hi Mark, Good to see you back. This is none of my business and people certainly have reasons why they might do or not do something.... (AND, maybe it's been done already?) But I read this and can't help to think that it would simply be a good idea to post the schematics "here" (or somewhere) for posterity. There may come a day where someone emailing with you won't be easy.... yet your legacy items will still be in circulation. Having it publicized would allow help for them to continue. Again, I know it's none of my business....and that possibly it's been done. I just keep circling back to this line of thought so after the 14th circle back, decided to mention it.
  17. It is, when it's my wife.... but that's probably better suited for a different thread.... or my therapist... (I'm going back to hell now so I can start my immolation process....)
  18. Just saw this, glad to hear things are on the mend (I was going to say "on the rise" but decided against...)
  19. You guys have too much time on your hands lol. I'm a stubborn type who gets focused and "will win" the fight.... at perhaps the cost of losing the war. I was focused on getting this thumb drive reformatted to FAT32, then I messed up the partition, the volume was messed up. I couldn't figure out how to get the volume corrected. Nothing I was trying worked (I DID however, get reacquainted with may old DOS commands and discovered the "Powershell" program!) Anyway, went to Gatlinburg to have lunch with a life long friend....and on way home, stopped at store and bought another thumb drive that was already formatted to correct size and FAT32. Now that I know the outboard disk being plugged into my monitor was the issue, this should work like a charm. If not, I'll take my Ipod with me and try to use it (it freaks out and dies sometimes when used in car but NEVER does it when used while mowing, only in car) I was leaving for Beaufort SC the next day so I had one shot to copy audio files and try cold turkey in morning to see if it worked. Worked like a charm so my problem is fixed and I now have two unused thumb drives that I'll reformat to EXfat or NTSB (or whatever the new format is) For $10, I can just throw the recently bought drive away....but I won't.
