  1. I use RS Cables silver interconnects and speaker cables. (www.rscables.com) They're solid silver and not a ton of $. Can't help you with the SACD ?. I run a Jolida N2 my DAC for 2 channel. I have a Denon 2900 DVD/SACD in my HT but have yet to use it for SACD music. Good Luck!!
  2. I know the bad rectifier tube allowed too much current through the line. I watched it on my multimeter as the fuse exploded. I do pay particular attention to my bias consistency checking very frequently with any tube change. I use KT-88's for classical and the 90s' for jazz, in particular. Also I keep my tubes clean, grease free and cool. Still I'm wondering about the high failure rate because I've not heard this from others. My supplier suggests that I'm less than lucky....but I don't believe in reading the stars. Thnx Dodger
  3. I very much like my Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista 21 DAC, if your doing a DAC. If you're looking to replace the player then I suggest you look for one that plays the SACD modes. I'm sure you can get lots of recommendations here.
  4. That's what's on my wifes custom auto plates: 2Hpy2Jy
  5. Retired. Did applied bioengineering for life support ventilators. Was part of the team that designed/built Supermans portable unit (which didn't kill him, but did empower ALL of his vocalization). Live near Coeur d'Alene Idaho and it's gonna snow 2nite!!!
  6. Curious about my recent tube experiences. I've had 3 failures in new and young tubes. A KT-88, KT-90 and a rectifier tube 5U4G. I'm using an integrated SLI-80 Cary amp and all failures have occured in the left channel. 2 of these failures were instantaneous meaning they crashed and burned on their initial outing (actually it maybe that the bad rectifier tube fried the KT-90). Once refitted everything works well. All tubes were replaced gratis from my source. Is this a component problem....a quirk of these vintage make tubes and therefore 2 B expected.....or a problem with my supplier??? Appreciate the input.
  7. Cones have used paper composites in their construction and I suppose its possible to harvest paper birch bark for said designs. Sounds crazy 2 me 2!!
  8. The answers provided can be distilled down to "maybe, depends and relative". Max man introduces enough variables to confuse confucious...and there's nothing wrong with that. It renders the point that under a range of playback/format circumstances the same recording achieves different results for the same listener (assuming he can divorce his ears from any prejudices). Max also provides the answer: If you wish to hear the best rendition of any recoring own all the playback tools and test all the formats. VOILA!!
  9. 1st off I'm not able to answer the question because I don't own the correct equip. But, having read several posts on this analogue VS digital issue I've rather wondered about actually testing it. Take the same music in both formats, neither of which has been pre-heard by the decision maker (subject). Blindfold that subject. Place the subject in their own listening arena. Have a friend play either format multiple times for the un-seeing, yet listening subject. Tabulate the subjects response for both preference and consistency. Repeat with at least 10 subjects, again on their own equipment (this may eliminate or introduce confounding variables so perhaps a single system would be better, not sure). Crunch the numbers and provide the statistics. They should then denote a clear preference, or not, with some degree of confidence level for analogue VS digital formats. VOILA!!!
  10. Thank you Mr. Schmoe! Yes indeed that's the Santana album I referred to. If you blow it up you'll find that the roaring lion picture is an abstract composed from a collage of human faces. Thnx agin
  11. Santanas' roaring lion album. (anyone can feel free to post a picture of it for me).
  12. I was sorta hoping that y'all would be knowledgeable about these. Unfortunately I didn't keep any information on them or the gentleman who showed them to me. I audienced them in Calif. and now I live in Idaho. As you can see the top horn is clearly separate and would actually fit in a corner configuration. They're Italian in manufacture and have a web site at www.mantrasound.it, in Italian of course. Maybe max.g could help?? The horn drivers are biphasic, firing high frequencies forward and middle frequencies rearward. The horn itself is wood, which I recall is also requisite to sound reproduction integrity. It sounds impressive and looks a little overwhelming. Any info would be interesting, eh?
  13. While awaiting the arrival of my new Khorns I happened upon a pair of the Mantra Dulcets for around 10K. This speaker uses a huge multiphased reverse oriented horn with a bass cone loaded subwoofer with external crossover circuitry. As I suspected with the Avant Garde Trios (thank you all) this speaker shined through the mid and high frequencies and whumped through bass notes. As I listened I thought to myself how interesting it would be to hear the Mantra horn coupled with a Klipschorn bass horn. Although the Mantra horn is somewhat hideous in appearance I believe it would actually sit atop a Khorn bass unit (it's also modular in construction). Has Klipsch ever toyed with reverse horn configurations? Any thoughts on hybrid speakers?
  14. It's quixotically moronic and a Christmas dinner must listen to. It's Larry the cable guys VERY LARRY CHRISTMAS. It has such favorites as: "Oh Holy Crap": "I Pissed My Pants": "Hark The Hairlip Angel":...and "Sticks And Horse Turds". 28 mind leveling cuts sure to please the grumpiest of guests. Brought to you by Warner Bros. Records, Inc.
  15. Methinks and my attraction to the klipschorn is that at the sweet spot I'm at the concert and anywhere else the concert is where it should be...a performance from the next room, etc... In other words the biggest failing I've noted in most every other speaker is that when not in the sweet spot they are terribly flat and unrealistic. The klipschorn always sounds good and only gets better when you decide it's serious listening time. Performance disparity can also be due to unitlateral tube dysfunction. If you're running tubes you may wish to confirm the bias settings and follow up with troubleshooting if necessary.
  16. All of the above and add the "Home Alone" saga.
  17. No doubt there are some retail store fronts which sell both items. My experience is that, even in large metro areas, high end audio is shown and sold from dealers located in private homes. Sadly, Klipsch's policy of requiring a store front does limit market exposure...especially for the heritage line. Identify your product choices and locate the nearest dealer to your location from the manufacturer website.
  18. Read the Khorn VS Wilson link with great interest. I've always wondered more seriously about the big Avante Garde Trios horns as a Khorn comparison. Obviously one needs a taste for air raid sirens to appreciate their appearance but I've never been able to hear them. It's curious that even with 3 horns they still recommend a room sized sub-woofer (at some great expense) to compliment the system. Tell me do!!!
  19. Devilishly witty and quite well thought out.
  20. I returned new and modified Jolida, too noisy. Replaced it with Cary SLI-80 which is very quite. Had to upgrade tubes to get the performance where I wanted it (Yugo KT-90's, Brimar 6SN7's, Amperex 6922's and RCA rectifiers 5U4G's). I'm a very happy camper now!!
  21. curiosity here. Y'all been discussing heritage speakers in this configuration. The RC-7 will accept independent R and L channeling. What about bi-amping on of these so that left and right remain dedicated but with a centralized output (or am I missing the point all together)?
  22. The system seems 2B set up more for home theater than 2 channel. If you intend 2 listen to 2 channel Khorns are my choice (used ones shouldn't be $ prohibitive). If you intend to employ the sub-woofer in a 2 channel or are fleshing out the 7:1 then RF-7s in front would be my choice.
  23. I mounted RS-7s to the model 30 Omnimount for ceiling placement. It wasn't easy and perhaps there's a neater, simpler way to do it. Using a piece of hardwood I constructed what is basically a false wall that fit exactly into (I mean flat inside) the back of the speaker. The same piece of wood incorporated the bolts necessary to adapt the Omnimount. PM me with a tele # and I can try and splain what I did. In a nutshell it was a pain in the ***, but it worked very well and the brackets hold those bad boys any way I want em.
  24. Well it seems that we're all in the same vein. It's a very complex and emotional problem set that really needs distillation from conservative or liberal labelling. Sadly neither party has provided any serious approach to the issue. Solution sequencing says that identification is the 1st step. I've yet to hear anybody adequately identify the problem in a scope wide enough to engender answers. Politicians in general seem to massage the problem like the proverbial blind men and the elephant... and they get nowhere. One can only assume, like we have done here, that they just don't care. Y'all have a great holiday!!
  25. The issue is one of intelligence and practicality. Medicine is pragmatic. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that a poorly tended wound will cost much more to heal than a well care for wound (it can also kill, just like Superman). So if the US corralled all it knows about medicine, public health, medical research, and so forth... and managed somehow to focus and streamline it into an oragnized, uniform purpose I think it might work and still pay for itself. For example (a favorite of mine) if tobacco consumption was curtailed about 100 billion dollars annually would not be spent; drug abuse another 30 to 50 billion, etc.... Well delivered preventative care could save TONS of $ and keep people healthier at the same time. The US wastes a fortune being stupid and sloppy about health and medical care. It's a real shame because it's Americans who ultimately pay the bills and suffer from inadequate care. I'm definitely not a liberal, just anal about organization and inefficiency.
