  1. Hey, Those things look familiar. How do they compare to the PD-5V?
  2. Dean and All, Frustration solved for now. I read a passage from the ALK website this morning telling everybody to leave the bass enclosures alone: no added insulation...etc. Well to further explain, when I changed out the insulation on the back panels of my Corns (awaiting the new mid's and crossover updates), I went to a high density polyester foam of 2lbs. per cubic foot (this is my business); increased the width, length and doubled the thickness, with a little releif for the back of the mid range compression driver. Turns out to be a rather big mistake! I just changed it back to a layered polyester batt of non-compressed 1" thickness and went back to a shorter width and length. It was apparent that the increased size and different material likely choked the air flow and especially down low in the cabinet where the shelf sits; hell, it was nearly closed off. It's back kicking the laser off track occassionally, which it was doing beforehand. Hard to believe, but these vented enclosures appear to be extrememly sensitive to internal mods and especially when volume is taken up...I'm a moron. The loss of bass response was my number 1 concern and as it turns out, it was my ignorance. The comments on loss of efficiency were due to my noticeable increase in volume levels to get the bass back, now that it's restored, so to is the efficiency. It is a little brighter at higher volumes, which is what Dean had suggested earlier. Thanks to Bob Crites for great work and exceptional service; I'm rollin again...Dean G, mod next in line..TBC BS
  3. Dean, Explain "boomy"...depending on the definition, that might exactly be what I'm noticing. Let me try this, again...there is still quite a bit of bass...no question, but the heart felt stuff has been reduced a bit. Could that be as a result of the B-3's sending the 400 to 600 range to the bass driver?
  4. TB, There are plenty of places to leak on that stretch of road with tons of privacy. BS
  5. ALK, In my 1983 Corns, I just went from B-3's to standard B's with new cans. To confuse the issue, I also changed from the K52H mid's to Atlas PD5V's (99%K55V's or x's). What should I expect? Are there ES crossovers for the Corns? BS
  6. Greg...spray on lacquer, Deft...good stuff, and I've learned a few tricks. Woo ... everything is hooked up..driver problems are gone, but I'm reserving comment on the overall until I listen more. Appears to be a little more laid back, but I still can't determine major differences. Additionally, I've replaced just the back insulation with a larger pc. of 2lb. density convoluted polyester foam, don't know if I'm hurting the bass response any? Can you over do it with insulation? To my alma mater bro JW...start kickin it with Corns
  7. OK, everybody. Go to www.tyleracoustics.com,look under...about us, products, finishes and you'll see first hand speaker production with a veneering operation. As you can see, he uses products from Oakwood veneer company and you can go to that website. He does not iron on. He uses some type of spray on adhesive and rarely has any issues whatsoever. I have met Tyler and been through the plant, just 60 miles up the road...great guy. Small two to three man operation that produces a great product, if you're not a Klipschter. He is all over Audiogon. Anyway, he sands this stuff without problem and stains and finishes with Lacquer. I believe this product is heavily supported with melamine, but has other layers to aid in a good looking product. I did not hear of any problems with cracking on this type of veneer...Questions? By the way, Greg 928 or...you're skills are absolutely amazing, but I think this method and product may be more suitable for us in the novice category. BS
  8. I still love the "increase dosage" class. Someone needs a medal for that! and I may be in line for one of your hot rod mods, eventually.
  9. My updated "Type B's" will arrive on Wednesday evening via Bob C.
  10. Yes, but no trees, in this general development. They use trees to make parts of Khorns and Cornwalls...I like trees, but I won't hug one. TEE HEE...HEE
  11. Hey Woo, Uh, I'm speechless...trying to finagle (sp?) a way to get some Khorns out of this, maybe. Yes, you are correct, 4 Corns may do the trick as well. This was a place out 234 about 3 miles on the right headed East off of 65. Don't know what I was thinking? Should've stayed put...she knows me well, however now doesn't she? BS
  12. Ok, so after work she convinces me to take a ride with her (and our two girls) to see one of her friends and all, who works for this contractor, see and well, we arrive. New house with all the immenities, we can't afford this crap...I'm thinking. We look through the downstairs and I'm ready to leave in...oh, 5 minutes. Well, she proceeds to ask me to go upstairs...and I'm like "c'mon, we can't afford this...what's up there that's any different"?. She says just get your a$$ up here... I give her that stare, like I'm going to do something about it. Then she convinces me to go up there, whilst the kids are reaking havoc. Bathroom, bedroom, office BFD, right...oh wait... there's the attic door...WRONG!!!!!, big time Home theatre included. Wheels get to spinning, great corners...hey, nows my chance at the mighty Khorns? I'm thinking. You like it?, she asks. Recessed lighting, in wall speakers, DVD player, projector, huge custom screen, Large multichannel receiver, built in custom shelves. Room was at least 40 x 25 with a raised middle section...hey? how much is this place? TBC BS
  13. Either resin bonded or thermal bond polyester fiber batting.
  14. Since I put my corns upstairs with all mud magnets. I can't talk much on the cell phone. Any chances this is related? Hey! changing over to Alnico in the midrange soon, does anybody make a K-33 Alnico? on virtually the same spec?
  15. Michael, No, I would not undertake a re-veneer unless there is fairly major cosmetic damage. I am not a wood refinishing expert. But, can tell you that from what I've read and experienced, first hand. Two pair of Heresy finishing jobs, and this last one: stay away from Polyurethane coatings. Hand sand ever so carefully with the grain. Use scotchbrite finishing pads in between, to and fro. Then use the lacquer thinner to clean. Stop, and look for shiny areas, and rework ever so carefully, until all the shiny areas are gone; even down in the depths of the grain, the Lacquer thinner will help to expose any left over lacquer:(I'm under the impression that the 3M pads help here more than sandpaper). Once it's clean, and since Walnut is already dark, use a light shaded stain. Start light and go darker if needed, but not the other way. You'll be amazed. Then use a light coat or two of the Deft spray Lacquer (Wood finish)at a substantial distance: it atomizes very quickly, if that's correct to say it that way. Also, and for some reason, I seem to prefer the Olympic stain and I do not know, whether or not Klipsh used a stain at all, but the sun bleaching was evident, so I was left with no choice. Good luck and post some pic's. I would prefer an oil finish to all, but had no choice. Spray lacquer dries very, very quickly and especially with light coats. BS
  16. Don't get me wrong. I did not re-veneer, just a very careful removal of junk from one side, gentle sanding and scotchbrite, ever so careful stain job and a can of Deft spray lacquer...great stuff and now all sides are back in shape. There is a lot of thread on veneering. Look up a post by Jorjen on his cornwall re-do. You will not believe your eyes and you'll put away Oak forever....well maybe. Welcome aboard.
  17. Colt, This little job took all weekend as anal as I am. I just did this to bring back one side to original: The Deft spray lacquer product is outstanding, over a tiny staining job. The first owner, I'm nearly certain, used some stinking polyurethane to spruce up one side that was bleached out by the sun: it started to come off in tiny segments and you could hardly cut it with Lacquer thinner: it had to be urethane: therefore, out came the sandpaper for an entire one side re-do. I may still take the 600's in for the spray on truck bed liner treatment at some point, but for now: Crites back to Type B, and Atlas mid's.
