  1. Those medical tests seem very demanding for a human of any age. Passing on the audio interest to persons of Justin's age whether it is in the neiborhood or on the web is very gratifying for me. Justin appears to be a very mature soul; God seems to test the strong and intelligent with very difficult challenges. Find joy in the smiles and the tears every day; keep positive! Rick
  2. I do not go to other boards; when you experience a comfortable "electronic" neighborhood, you tend to hang around. When my kids get more grown up I'll be tapping into all that good tube knowledge here. Unless of course I find a gem during the Michigan spring garage sale season...
  3. SUB $ 500 or less HSU VTF 2 or ADire Audio Rava DVD $ 250 Toshiba 4700 or 5700 Reaceiver $ 500 Outlaw Speakers RB5 RC3 surrounds?
  4. Save your money and get an Outlaw for $ 499 Had a kenwood VR 307 and wondered why I did not like the sound for 2 years of other upgrades. Audio Flynn's rule of thumb for HT receivers...to get some kind of high current capabilities, the unit needs to weigh 25 pounds... 30 pounds preffered.
  5. DTS not as compressed from what I understand
  6. Rotel or NAD are reasonably priced intgrated amps. Tweeter price of $ 60 is reasonable. Most companies focus their efficienies on manufacturing not service parts distribution. Try buying an outboard rear view mirror from a dealer for your car; they are pricey.
  7. Pretty cool stuff although I am not familiar with the CD player performance. Rega Planet or Rotel get some good reviews. Or you could consider Perpetual Technoloies or MSB DACs.
  8. There is this "anti piracy "crap going on with the HDTV stuff. I bought a 36 inch direct view Toshiba HDTV. Now rumors are manufactureres will be going away from analog component video connections to a digital connect to prevent piracy and possible obselete the current HD equipment. I probably would of bought the TV anyway; the TOshiba and the Panasonic RP 91 Progrssive Scan DVD/DVDA have an awesome picture. Not enough time in my schedule to listen to music and be a poster; let alone pirate software. Piracy only exists when the profit motive exists. If legitimate items were priced reasonable piracy would not exist. The only fake Rolexes I have seen have quartz movements not Swiss movements. It would not be profitable to clone a swiss movement. As noted before I know much less about video than I do audio so I am still trying to understand the future of this HD stuff. Be carefull about the TV upgrade for the next 18 months there is some risk of obsolesence. You could try cable upgrades... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
  9. First, I always agree with Ed(and Gil and Ray). The Synergy series I beleive is marketed to give you a taste of the Klipsch sound. You cannot fairly compare them to a Vandersteen. Perhaps a Paradigm or PSB in the same price range is a more reasonable comparison. I may someday get back into what my wife calls "refridgerator sized" speakers(Heritage); but the Reference and Legend series of speakers will keep me happy until I get a house(or build one) with the right room. Second, select your software for making judgements very carefully. Allot of new music is mastered to be listened to on a boom box or car stereo. The compression and other tactics used by producers result in strange music. I like the soundtrack to "Last of the Mohicans", not my everyday listening music but it has realy great dynamic range. "Lord of the Rings" soundtrack may be pretty good I will have to listen to it a few more times. I recently got Bill Evans "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" and Sonny Rollins "Saxaphone Collosus" on XRCD and I think they would be good for comparing or auditioning equipment.
  10. I almost bought the Toshiba SD 4700(or 5700) because it had DVD Audio capability. Panasonic RP56 has the farudia chip. Sony 700 model is pretty nice. All of these can be had for $ 300 or less I ended up buying the Panasonic RP91 for the superior Audio capability.
  11. "One great failing of the American public - undoubtedly fueled by the Rule of Business, is that there are no ethics - - only economics. We accepted slavery like sheep, we accepted the genocide of the Native American population like sheep and we are accepting the further enslavement of other peoples like sheep." Nicely put MDENEEN! It used to be sins of omission were OK in negotiations; but never sins of comission. But in the last 5 years it is socially acceptable to lie repeatedly to a person or group if the result has a positive financial bearing on you or your employer. Horn Ed has commented in the past on how he was dissilusioned with some of the big money people he has encountered in the past years. We should trade with China to make sure they have cash flow to trickle down to the little people; but "Most favored Nation Trading Status" for China(or the Saudis for that matter)is absurd.
  12. Some times you just gotta chuck the old stuff. Unless it is really classic. The older Technics, Pioneer and Marantz receivers were the backbone of entry level 2 channel music listening for many years. I had a cousin give me an 80 pounds Technics 170 watt receiver from the 70s. I played around with it on and off for 6 months but was afraid with as quirky as it was it may smoke my speakers. Gave it to a local high school rock band to use as a power amp for their stage monitors.
  13. In the last 3 days I have noticed some little "Pond Ripple" lines in the very white bright areas of the HDTV terrestrail signals from all stations. I cannot reproduce the phenomena through the Sattellite signal or DVD. The indoor 10 year old Radio Shack powered antenna is the source still. I am putting in an order for an outdoor Terk antenna and will switch the component video cable to see if I can effect a change. The picture is still awesome but it is a strange artifact. I do not debug video as well as I do audio.
  14. kenrat, Kinda fun causin a ruckus! I recommended HLS610 to a friend of mine who always wanted to own JBL he really likes them. Save up some money, bypass the Synergy step and go right for Reference or Heritage. ..and then feel the force flow through you young Skywalker! Note: Wife out today; Who "Who's Next" through RB 5s...... they aint havin this much fun in Murmansk today!
  15. Listened to David Crosby live from King Biscuit. I used to listen to the "flower hour" on my old Marantz 2225 reciver through my really good AKG proffessional headphones back in the 70's. Crosby concert is from a post prison tour in 4-8-89 in Philadelphia. My wife and I saw the same tour at the very small and good sounding Royal Oak music theater in Detroit. After getting off "free base" Crosby's voice sounded and sounds like one of the best in R&R. Mike Finnegan on organ and Dan Dugmore on guitar are very good. Al little accoustic and a little electric. I think recording and mastering of this cd is world class Red Book CD quality. Anyone else got a King Biscuit CD recommendation?
  16. Just thinking... an Enron thread would be much more volitale than Wal Mart. Rays Cow post is still the best political commentary I have read in a long time.
  17. My Panasonic RP 91 got backordered so i will not get it until next week. At $ 480 I think it is a real sound unit for video and a good expeiment in DVD Audio. From what I read in the "Perfect Vision", Audio Review.com and of course Mike Lindsey's endorsement; I decided to give it a try. Mickey Hart and Neil Young, a couple of musicians I respect, have come out strongly on the side of DVD A. No one who is a musician I am really crazy about has come out on the side of SACD. SACD seems to be mostly endorsed by TAS, Stereophile and people into Classical music exclusively. Sony being so immersed in both the software and hardware technology of SACD makes me uncomforatable. I am not totally down on Sony; I own Sony software, a 27 in Trinitron, old DVP S530 D DVD player and the kids CD stuff. It just seems like SACD is similar to Microsoft Windows; the core of the technology is ulta proprietary.
  18. Never count out the Outlaw 1050. You can only audition it in your home but at $499 it is low risk.
  19. The 3.1 were my first home Klipsch speakers. In my opinion they would sound better with the grill off. With 4 kids 2 dogs and 3 cats in the house it is a very robust grill to keep the woofer safe. They are now my rears and RB 5s are my fronts. The RB 5s grill stays out of the way of the music, but is considerable more frajile. It would be interesting to get Bob or Klipsh administrators opinion of the metall grill. It seems to be only rarely used on a Klipsch speaker.
  20. I quoted the Declaration of Independence because nothing from the U.S. Constitutuion struck me at the time. I will find a goodie from that to toss in. Ray's post is GREAT; pure Libertarianism is my favorite, but there are too many people taking up their time telling them what to do with their cows they cannot find the time or the energy to come up with a good marketing plan.
  21. I hate to agree with Seb(just kiddin) BUT... He hit the nail on the head with the list An old Canadian Neil Young has "Silver and Gold" an accoustic guitar listening pleasure that is mellow and clear.
  22. "T", So our politicians are going vote for good socialist stuff for us? Remember for Socialism to work you need socialist elitists(like moma Clinton) to create systems to herd us ignorant constituents into what is good for us. The elitists in the house and senate have already withdrawn themselves from the socialist social security system(which I have never planned to collect from); that(SS) is not the proper reward for their intelligent leadership of the ignorant masses. They have a pension plan I would saw off my left arm for, that us serfs do not and most likely will never qualify for. "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" in the Declaration of Independence was not a garuntee of a socialist free lunch in regard to any need. A valuable service whether it be local or national defense, roads, health care or retirement must be earned through providing value. Russia, UK, France, and Canadian economies suffer by trying to provide to many services to citizens that provide no value to the equation. Unfortunately the goodwill of benevolent intentions never balance out flawed financial models.
  23. And I thought I had no life at 290 posts. I feel better now. How did Justin get answering machine so quick? Maybe he did not like the "no life" designation?
  24. People are too thin skinned these days. Do not we all understand the members of the constitutional congress 225 years ago had to have pretty knock down drag out debates. What I do not like about the evolution of our system of government is our representatives are all lawyers and indistinguashable from each other(Republicrats). I have to research what I caught a blurb of today. George W coming out for a standardized medial insurance plan? Sounds like Mrs. Clintons socialist national health care plan a little bit. Socialism influenced policies are counter to our constitution. Dad said,"if you do not have the money to pay the doctor you stay sick or die,was the best health plan we had 80 years ago; and it kept the costs down".
  25. I am picking up my Panasonic RP 91 as soon as my wife comes home. Kids are still working on their home work from school. Very rare to hear a bad review on this one. I did not want SACD. I wanted DVD A to listen to the Warner artists like Neil Young. The Sony recommendation is sound.
