  1. mdeneen, Not to worry my friend...I enjoy this hobby alot, but I don't take it that seriously. My eq unit was bought used about 7 years ago as a part of a package that included: Yamaha M-4 Power Amp (120w x 2) Onkyo Integra P-3090 Pre Amp ADC SS-315 10 band EQ (spectrum anylizer, but no mic) Nakamichi ZX-7 Cassette Deck Infinity RS-3 Studio Monitors w/ stands (in a closet/rotted woofer surounds) all of the above (circa '81?) for $250! I use the above package sans Infinities w/ my: Sony CDP-CX400 CDP (gift yipee!) '85 LaScalas ($700 used) Rat Shack gold interconnects (what...$15/stereo pair?) DIY cat5 speaker cables (dumpster dive baby! FREE) So I don't have that much invested...but it rocks the house for me. Dave
  2. "you can't expect to put a $100 ADC SoundShaper into a fine system with no ill-effects. " Damn! I hate it when my bubble gets burst by someone who's opinion I respect. Sure enough I have an ADC Sound Shaper...sure looks like more than $100 bucks...Although I do have it wired into my system, but I don't use it...That spectrum anylizer display is so cool though I think I'll keep it! Dave It's more important to look good than sound good
  3. What the hell am I doing here?...I don't belong here! Dave I'm a Freak...I'm a Weirdooooo
  4. Synthfreek, Chaulk me up as a big Pixies fan...I have 5 cd's of theirs including "Doolittle" which is one of my all time favorites by any band! I also have all of Frank Black's (aka Black Francis) solo work and several Breeders (Kim Deal) cd's. I saw the Pixies Live at a club on South Beach...the drummer screwed up a song and Frank stopped the whole show and made the band start the song all over again...never seen that before...still it was an amazing show! Hard to call the Pixies current though...didn't they break-up like 7 or 8 years ago? You mention The Rentals but not Weezer? I thought The Rentals was just a side project by Weezer's bassist and drummer? I heard a funny interview with the band Hansen last year...They said: "We're A BOY BAND...We're all in our teens and that means we are still boys and we play our own instruments that makes us a band... some of The Backstreet Boys are in their 30's that makes them men and they don't play instument - they are a singing group so they should be called a MAN GROUP! Pop Music is what's popular with the 15 to 25 yr old demographic...30 yr old and up guaranteed to hate it...it's ALWAYS been that way...Think you hate teen bands and rap - wait till the next generation of Pop comes along! Dave
  5. Monty, Great lookin' set-up! Nice job on the the cabinet and even better job on the cutie Dave
  6. Mobile, You lucky dog...Sienna is beautiful...as amazing a Greece is ...I'll bet you have a tough time just leaving Tuscany (Sienna, Florence, Pisa) The only thing that will keep you from comming back 20 lbs. heavier from all that pasta and gelato will be the constant walking from one amazing site to another. I lived in Florence for six months...it's my favorite place in the world! Color me green with envy Dave
  7. Really John...I mean you of all people...that was surely a statement that should've (and certainly could've) been backed up w/ some data! May all of our tongues live long and healthy lives! Dave Tongue usually planted firmly in cheek
  8. Ray, You said: "1) Cheap innoffensive wine in a cardboard box is not any worse than cheap innoffensive wine in a bottle, plus it takes up less space and won't break if it falls out of the fridge. 2) Actually, there's nothing better to top off a good dinner than a really good Kabinett, Spatlese or Auslese with some rich cheesecake. Particularly from one of the really great vinyards, like Bernkastler Doctor. If you try to drink one of these things with dinner, yeah, it's pretty sickly sweet, but in combination with a good dessert, it's wonderful." Where's the data? Just in case anyone missed my point...I'm not saying there aren't any good Rhine wines...they just aren't my cup of...er..box-o-wine. My point is "Tastes Differ". I prefer an afer dinner cigar (Arturo Fuente or Padron) w/ a glass of Cognac or Port (the cheap stuff is fine for me) Also, I just happen to have had the misfortune of dropping a cardboard container of OJ just yesterday...spilled all over the place...but no broken glass. Cheers! Dave
  9. If you want to draw attention to a thread just use Bose in the title...stirs up the pot more than speaker wire and interconnects! While I will agree that there is plenty to admire about Bose the company (Marketing, R & D, Success, etc..)...it's really the average Bose consumer that I tend to take issue with. Most of the people I know who own the little cubes think that they have bought the end all-be all of audio systems! Some months ago I had a friend of my father's over for dinner. He commented on my speakers(LaScalas)saying Klipsch were pretty good. I asked him if he was into audio gear and if so what did he have. With an extended chest and a proud smile he said he had an Acoustimass system. I think he expected me to be humbled! I didn't want to debate with a guest so I quickly changed the subject...my wife couldn't believe I passed up an opportunity to talk about my system! This same guest brought an expensive bottle of German Rhine wine...I'm sure there are those who really like that sickly sweet stuff...I am NOT one them. I'll curse the day when I see an hour long infomercial dedicated to selling the virtues of wine in a cardboard box. Dave
  10. Although I agree with all that is said above...especially the part about auditioning the subs at home... You said: "it is going below the TV" Can you be more specific? Does below the TV mean in some sort of AV cabinet? I would not want to put a KSW-12 or really any sub in an enclosure...too much opportunity for lost energy and vibrations.
  11. Are you using disc two of the "Shrek" set? There is no DTS on disc one ...only Dolby. Dave
  12. Anyone mention Mick Ronson yet? David Bowie has helped introduce me to a number of talented axe slingers...Ronson, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, GE Smith, and of course S.R.V.! I was always into the alternative rock scene...not really the same overall level of skilled technical musicians here but some of the guys I like are: Johnny Marr (The Smiths) Billy Duffy (The Cult) Daniel Ash (Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love & Rockets) Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction, RHCP) Warren Cucorillo (Zappa, Missing Persons, Duran Duran) Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) Vernon Reid (Living Color) Dr. Know (Bad Brains) John McGeoch (Public Image Ltd.) Great thread BTW...got me to blow off the dust on some older cds. Dave
  13. I would have thought that those were professional LaScalas what with the separate bass and mid/tweeter wedge shaped section.
  14. Another vote for S.R.V.! Although not really considered a guitar god...everytime I hear Mark Knofler's solo in "Sultans of Swing"...I get chills the like of which I hadn't felt since the live version of "Free Bird"! Dave
  15. One of the great things about getting into classical music is that you can find alot of recordings dirt cheap! Although some of the book stores - turned music stores (ala Barnes & Noble or Borders) have much better classical selections...they do tend to be more expensive. Your bigger mass market electronics chains (ala Circuit City or Best Buy) carry classical cd's for very cheap prices...we're talkin' $5- $7 bucks...that's cheaper than used! Granted, some of the higher end lables like Telarc are not nearly as cheap...but I have picked up a few Deutsche Gramophone disks on the cheap. Some composers/compositions not list already that I like: Vivaldi - "Four Season's" Copeland - "Fanfare For The Common Man" a must hear on horns! or how about film scores...I like the work of some of the following: James Horner John Williams John Barry Trever Jones One of my more listened to disks of the last couple of years in Tom Newman's score for "American Beauty"...granted it's not classical, but give this one a listen...and don't forget to turn on the sub...there's some pretty serious LF on this recording! Happy Hunting! Dave
  16. avman, That looks like a fun room to me...great job! Is that a drop ceiling? Did you paint the ceiling tiles or did you buy dark patterned tiles like that? The carpet, rope lights, and chrome bar table set are cool additions! Thanks for posting your pics! Dave
  17. Hey Ed! To us rednecks down here in S.W. Broward County...that's Davie, FL I'm actually in Cooper City which is bordered by Davie on three sides...our motto "Cooper City...just like Davie...minus the horse shite" And what does all of this have to to w/ anything?...Well it's Sunday and there's no football...sigh... Dave
  18. This weekend I was listening to an associate's iPod (pretty cool little device!)...he happened to be playing Luis Miguel (not my typical cup of tea)...I thought his back-up band (horn section in particular) sounded pretty darn good...then I found out he was being backed up by The Tower of Power...never knew they recorded for K-tel... Dave
  19. I own LaScalas but I have never heard a pair of Belles...I imagine that they would sound remarkably similar...the biggest difference would be the cosmetic styling of the Belle (named after PWK's 1st wife...See Bob G....we're listening!). Both speakers are nearly identical in height but the Belles are over 6" wider and the LaScalas are over 5" deeper. Although both speakers use the same drivers and horns the LaScala's squawker is crossed over alittle lower at 400 Hz compared to the Belle at 500 Hz (not sure why...I assume cabinet volume or the different folded horn design?). Yes... there are many more finishes available for the Belle... but LaScalas can have grilles usually for the HF section only but I saw a pic of a fellow BB member's LaScalas w/ full grilles over the entire front. I would double check that dealers price on new LaScalas. Last I heard the suggested retail price was $2,700/pair... I doubt anyone could cut $1,200. The Klipschorn would be the ultimate choice though...assuming $$$ and corners are not a problem for you. Dave
  20. Gary, While I would have to agree w/ all the above advice regarding the RF-7's superiority over the RF-3's....bear in mind that you would also probably want to change out your center channel RC-3 for an RC-7 in order to retain a seemless front soundstage. Dave
  21. Seb, "...you could get more for your money by spending it on smaller speakers with better tonal accuracy, balance, soundstage and whatnot." You're not really buying this line are you? I don't think there are many things that smaller speakers do better than largers peakers other than fit on a bookself, or take up a smaller footprint, or maybe please the wife...Oh and they do generally cost less. NO FLAMES PLEASE ...I AM GENERALISING There are far more aspects to consider. Aside from obviously listening to the speakers in questions, I like looking at crossover frequencies between tweeters, Mids (not an issue w/ Refs.), and woofers. Hearing the human voice in a horn (at least primarily) not a woofer or changing back-n-forth between the two can be pretty important in both music and HT. Are these speakers to be used primarily for HT or will they be used for music alot as well? My 2 cents (that's U.S. dollars to you Seb ) You would have a kick @ss system w/ either of your choices! I'd go w/3's for primarily HT (just Canadian Dollars and sense) and 7's for mostly music (size does matter!) Buy hey...that's just me Good Luck Dave
  22. DD2, Guess you just didn't look hard enough. Triad fronts JBL Pro Surrounds Big Bad Somthing or Others for subs. I actually thought the foyer was equally impressive! Dave
  23. Q-man, I live in Cooper City...you mind sharing what store you are talking about? I haven't seen any McIntosh dealers around here...sounds like it would be a fun place to browse! Dave
  24. Hmmmn, "I really haven't decided about speakers" Perhaps this should be an entirely different thread but... What comes first, the chicken or the egg. I've always felt that speakers were the most significant and most personal of the components in any music system. Therefore making the speakers the first order of business when designing one's own system. Should our new friend indeed decide on tubes she will be severely limiting the amount appropriate speaker choices avialable to her (ie: she would need high efficiency speakers). Do others here feel differntly? Should the front end be decided before speakers? Dave
  25. Don't be jealous Tom...I'd be happy to come over to your house for a photo op. ...on second thought...it's little too hot and humid for me in Savanna...might melt off all my red and black face paint! You're just gonna have to buy my movie. Darth...I mean Dave
