  1. BTW, those are KCBR's which were exactly like my first pair when I was 23 years old.
  2. That is exactly what I did for mine in 1977. When I went to Paul Klipsch's house in 1985, I noticed he had 2 false corners and he wrote about them in Dope from Hope, but 3/4 plywood as shown in this guy's picture is good enough.
  3. This is an easy one. Just cut some 1/2 inch plywood and enclose the backs up to the rear edge od the grille cloth. INvisible solution. I would use a good PL glue to fully seal but you can also use gasket and screws with no glue to make removable.
  4. Like the Nike commercial said: "Just do it."
  5. Nice, All of a sudden my sub feels so inadequate... Perhaps I used too strong of a word to create contrast against horn loading the lows. However, it's a matter of principles of physics, now isn't it. Horn subs provide higher output, greater detail, and WAY lower distortion. Once you have experienced horn subs you will never go back to a DR sub, ported or not. Paul Klipsch founded his company on 2 and 3-way ALL HORN systems from mono to 3 channel. All klipsch speakers have at least ONE "horn in the box" Since this is Klipsch's Community, and Klipsch IS horns, it only makes sense to plug Horn SUBS here, n'est-ce pas? The question remains: Why doesn't Klipsch produce Horn Subwoofers? Easy answer: They would NOT sell. But there are enough enthusiastic fanatical freaks like me on this board to suport the DIY notions that inherently make us REBELS to begin with. Now y'all go a and make some good sawdust, heah?
  6. I agree. It's the same XY dimensions as my 30x60" Tapped Horn Sub, just a larger Z dimension. It's more like 20-100 Hz. instead of 15-60 Hz (my TH's output is room dependent, but mine is in a big room finally). IThe F-20 is also more efficient by several Decibels. So you are trading box size for efficiency or lower bass, just like in a bass reflex. The same principles apply. It's not quite as easy to build as mine, and takes a bit more lumber, BUT, it's in the same class of outperfoming ALL direct radiator subs, it you can handle the cubic feet of lumber space.
  7. Three Tapped horn subs using 3 LAB 12 drivers. $300 each DIY. One shakes the floor. 3 shakes the whole neighborhood. Down to 15 Hz., which can't be touched by wimpy direct radiator woofers.
  8. Agree with Dr. Who on the Chorus recommendation. I have owned Chorus 1 and II. I prefer the II for the Tractrix mid horn (which I own and will make a super Heresy out of it). It's hard to beat a 15" woofer with a huge magnet and a 15" passive for bass. 3-way beats the 2-way in definition, but the RF-7 is the best of the newer breed.
  9. Hear Khorns when I was 14 because my newspaper station was 3 blocks from the Klipsch Dealer. I built different speakers which culminated in 20 cubic foot boxes with Altec/EV Pro components. 511B horns with 808-8a drivers, T-35 tweeters, and 421 woofers. I had over $1,000 in raw components that was a LOT of money for a 20 year old kid making $3/hr. back then. Sold the big home made Altecs, got married, and when I got back from honeymoon, I got my KC-BR Khorns at 23, followed by a center LaScala 6 months later using PWK's resistor box for 3-channel operation in my expando living room mobile home. Glad I didn't wait as long as some of you did, as I enjoyed that setup for over 30 years before I could actually make improvements with Tapped Horn sub and hybrid components, which include Klipsch K402 with K1133 driver. I think the biggest improvement to a Khorn or Belle would bet the K402 horn with K69 driver as a 2-way with active Xover and PEQ. If you can handle it.
  10. Belles take up more floor space than a corner horn, so they work best against a front wall less than 10 ft apart since you can't toe them in.
  11. you can build a tapped horn sub that will take you from 15-70Hz. for about $300. Mine was a coffee table before I put it in a corner upright after a move.
  12. You can get some realistic looking fake woodgrain stick-0n material to get the sound AND the looks. Or just make W.C. an offer he can't refuse for his Elliptical Trachorns. I don't think he would sell his beloved Martinelli's though, which I have seen and heard and they are sweet sounding (this from a K-402 owner....see my Avatar).
  13. My conclusion to this entire thread would be a modification of the above quote: "Enjoy your PLEASANT distortions." (2nd harmonics from tubes, and a heavily "dithered" noise floor from tape).
  14. I was part of those studies, since a couple of Michigan Audio Engineers invented the ABX box. I participated in those tests, when I was YOUR age Mike. That was the conclusion. I never believed the so-called Golden Ears that claimed they could hear a picobel drop across a relay contact, even gold plated ones. Puhlease! But, much like the Megapixel Myth in photography, Emotional testing trumps science in the real world.
  15. True. I don't PWK was deity by any means, he just had strong opinions backed by measurements and listening, just like the rest of us. The biggest problem with most SS amplifiers today is their high power designs.........which is why I like the chip amps running from car battery voltages...............very TUBE-like without the heat. I always liked the SOUND of all my tube equipment. I just didn't like the hassle of owning them. Chasing bias, warmups, too hot in the summer etc. But when a tube amp is done well, it sounds wonderful, no doubt. I just don't want to pay the price, monetarily or othewise. This was supposed to be a "compare notes" discussion right?
  16. That is what Saul Marantz (yes THAT Marantz) himself once told me. After he sold his company to Superscope, he was VP of Marketing for Dalquist.
  17. My very first LP, when I was 10 years old was called "Something New" which doesn't show up here. It had a picture of the boys on a TV stage somewhere. It featured a German version of "I wanna Hold you Hand." My favorite tune from that LP was "Slow Down." Which, thankfully shows up in the "past Masters" section, and nowhere else, since "Something New" is not part of the box set, but all of the other tunes from that LP are, except the German version, which I'm not a fan of anyhow.
  18. Had McIntosh 240, HK Citations, Scott, Dynaco, Marantz 8b in my late teens and into my late 20's. PWK told my Marantz 8b was a good amplifier when I told him that I was using one on my Khorns after telling him his didn't belong in the Museum in Hope. LOL. I remember him telling me that Dr. Matti Otala of Finland found the problem with all SS amplifiers, which was Transient Intermodulation Distortion. Once all of the SS amp designers of the world cleaned all that up in their products, the differences between them disappeared. What is more important to those who listen to Horns, is the performance in the MILLIWATT range. IOW, less than 1 Watt of output power. This is where very little testing is done on most products. A Klipsch engineer in Indy tested my cheap little Sonic Impact amp in the lab and told me it was a VERY GOOD 6 watt/ch. amplifier. PWK always said what the world needed was a good 5 Watt amplifier. Too bad he never lived to measure and hear the Tripath Chips. Mine are 2020 and 2024's with Radio Shack power supplies. Tubes wear out, but chip amps never do, so I'm all for low power SS in that sense to go with horns. Tubes are too finicky and expensive for my taste. But their exaggerated 2nd harmonic distortions are very PLEASANT for those who love tubes, so why not? It's all about choices and they all sound good these days. No such thing as a bad one unless they need repairs or capacitor replacments.
  19. I have a pair of those speakers as well. Did a different Xmod than yours I believe. Would you mind posting the schematic?

    Diana Krall new CD

Yes indeed. Her looks are just a bonus. Very talented piano player and singer. But it's a nice bonus. Besides, Elvis Costello scored her as his wife, which has given hope to lots of average looking guys around the world, like Billy Joel did with Christie Brinkley. LOL.
  21. Chorus II has much lower distortion and will play louder.

    Diana Krall new CD

Many men would disagree, but I think it's how she is marketed.
  23. Thanks! So how loud and how low does it go?
  24. Absolute waste of time for low frequencies, in fact, it makes things worse because it takes away volume. Tom Danley proved this by measurement. Horn sub without any angles won. Higher output and lower distortion.
