  1. Davec - I had (and to the best of my knowledge still have) the same problem with my Denon 3300. DD2 and others here may have remember my posting about it. Here's what I did to fix the problem (it was by accident and not intentional) and as crazy as it may sound, I'd give it a shot. On the back of the Denon, swap the leads to the surround speakers. IOW, for the right rear, take the positive lead from the speaker and hook it up to the negative output on the Denon and take the negative lead from the speaker and hook it up to the positive output on the Denon. Then do the same for the left rear. Turn Denon on and see what happens. I'm sure folks reading this are rolling their eyes in disbelief or laughing their arses off. I don't understand it either, but it worked for me and I'm not questioning it any longer. Tom Adams
  2. Mobile Homeless - If I may be so bold...please allow me to "push you off the cliff". Not very long ago, I bought a pair of 1971 Cornwalls basically on a whim. They were truly something I did not need for they would neither fit into my HT plans nor in the one room of the house I can claim is all mine - AKA "the computer room". Fortunately, our 4 bedroom house has one bedroom that is completely vacant except for the lone vacuum cleaner that lives there (hence it's known as the vacuum clean room). And it's the vacuum cleaner room that my Cornwalls have claimed squatters rights to. But I digress.... Your push - DO IT!! It pains me to no end to think that once my *#%&@ custom A/V cabinet comes in (ARGHHH!! ), my Cornwalls will go to the vacuum cleaner room and won't be a part of the HT set-up. The upside is that they will be part of a music only room. From the day I brought them home I've been amazed at their sound. I've re-listened to just about every one of my CD's and more times than not were WOW'd by what I hadn't heard before. And many times I've turned off my sub and listened to them in stereo direct only. Although they're being driven by a SS reciever, I'd love to hear them with a tube amp. Hey - maybe the music room will be my opportunity?? At any rate, I can't imagine anyone not liking the sound of these things, but I'm sure there are. My gut tells me you will be very pleased with them. Tom Adams ps: I too am very impressed with your website. <sigh>...one of these days....... This message has been edited by Tom Adams on 10-12-2001 at 01:21 PM
  3. You know....this thread reminds of some sage advice given to me many years ago and it went like this: "Tom, never argue with a crazy person. Why? Because on-lookers won't be able to tell which is which." Give it up guys. It's obvious TheEAR thinks the sun rises & sets at the Krell factory. Further, if his subs aren't included in a discussion about excellent subs, the discussion & opinion are bogus. Everyone has a right to an opinion and so does he and that's cool (personally, I find his sarcasm borish, petty, condescending and unnecessary - but, hey that's just me). As for the original message....Colin, FWIW, I understand the point you were trying to make and the message you attempted to convey. Your only mistake was posting something that didn't gush all over Krell. Tom Adams
  4. So what's the latest news/update about a "Want Ad" listing on the BB? Tom Adams
  5. Hey Jim - I didn't know you had Cornwalls with vertical horns? Uhhhh....oh, you have them laying on their sides. Nevermind. Seriously though, nice job and thanks for the pics. Once I relegate my Cornwalls to the music room (that would be when my *%#@&^ custom made A/V unit gets here ), I may have to do one of these re-wire jobs since I've got some speaker wire laying around. Tom Adams
  6. BigBusa - thanks for the photo of your ride. Sweet bike and scary fast. I have a ZX9R. Oh...that's right, mine is scary fast too. BTW, how'd you get that menacing comic book villian to stand still with your bike long enough to snap the picture?? And are we crazy?? Sportbikes and audio? That's a sure combination to drain the 'ol bank dry! As for receivers, I own a Denon and have been very happy with it. I didn't do a whole lot of shopping around before I bought, but I think I made the right choice at the time. I know you said you'd rather buy used, but you may wanna look into Outlaw Audio. They've gotten nice press, good personal testimonies here and their prices are very reasonable. Just a thought. With all the major receiver manufacturers changing their products so fast, you should be able to luck into deals on leftover new products as well as barely used items. Many on this BB have gotten some good deals on new stuff from uBid. From my readings here, folks speak highly of Denon and Marantz with Onkyo & Yamaha coming in a close second. I realize this hasn't helped you narrow the field, but there's so many options out there for you, that it's difficult to say one way or the other. And then there's the tube crowd that would say your Cornwalls would be much happier being driven by tubes (personally, I'd love to try a tube amp one day). Take care and ride safe. Tom Adams
  7. Hey BigBusa and welcome to Klub Cornwall ! If you'll do a search on "Cornwall" here I think you'll find a lot of useful info and even some photos of others' Cornwalls. I myself have a pair of 1971 Cornwalls with vertical mounted squawker and tweeter horns. Yes, they are an awesome speaker. As for recommendations of what to drive them with....uh-ohhhh, you've come to the wrong place. No sireebob, you won't find opinions here. <ducking & running> BTW...your handle has me curious. The "Busa" part wouldn't happen to relate to a motorcycle would it?? Tom Adams
  8. fini - No, I don't have several pairs rolled up to toe down the Heresy. Actually I'm using a precision made item that accurately places the Heresy's angular attitude. That's right, a good 'ol piece of 1x2 right outta my scrap wood box! However, I am using a Thorlo atheletic sock (tried other brands, but to no use) under my Monster HTS2000 in order to eliminate a ground loop hum. Sorry DD2, couldn't resist. SteveP - Read an article in HT magazine about doing the "daylight" bulb thing you suggested. I have that on my list of tweaks and will try it if & when my *%$@ custom A/V cabinet comes in (ARGHHH!!!!! ). As for the attitude of the Heresy, I tried the upside-down placement and didn't really notice a major difference. But, then again, I didn't watch but one movie and it wasn't a major action flick. <LOL> The Heresy is "standing on its head", so to speak and the wife walks in, looks at the speaker, looks at me, shakes her head and then says "You know...I really wanna ask what that is all about. But I'm not. And ya wanna know why? Because I'm afraid you'll tell me." <LOL> I swear, she cracks me up sometimes. Tom Adams This message has been edited by Tom Adams on 09-20-2001 at 11:54 AM
  9. HOO-RAY!! Let's hear it for eq for getting it right. The socks were indeed on top of the CD player on top of the right Cornwall. For his efforts, eq will recieve a duplicate cassette recording of Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy". LOL As for the Heresy's performance - I like it as a center channel and don't seem to notice much of a problem in imaging. I've not tried it in any other position, but now that you've put that bug in my ear, I may have to give it a shot tonight. In all honesty, it performs as well as my RC-3 (or does the RC-3 perform as well as the Heresy?). Dialog is clear and has a different tonal quality (which is to be expected) than the RC-3. OTOH, this may not be a fair comparison since I did do the Klipschguy Heresy mod of moving the tweeter to a different tap on the autoformer. Regardless, I feel the Heresy matches up to the Cornwalls better than the RC-3 (duh!). I find I also like it better for 5ch. stereo than the RC-3, like a fuller, warmer sound? Once again, maybe the mod - maybe not. Then again, maybe my ear is just use to "that" sound, I dunno... Jobman - I didn't get off totally unscathed. Got "the look" that only wives can give, followed by a shaking of the head in disbelief. ShapeShifter - My Cornwalls are 1971 vertical horn models and the PWK emblems indicate which side the tweeters are on/up. Your comment about your emblems being on the same side has me curious. Have you ever taken the back off your speakers?? You might have two "right" speakers. And yes, the left Cornwall extends into the hallway opening, but ever so slightly. If & when my *#^%@&% custom A/V cabinet comes in <ARGHHHH!! >, the Cornwalls will be relegated to a music only room and the Heresy's will resume full time duty as mains until I can invoke the cloak of darkness and bring home a pair of RF-?? . As for the Heresy's, they are 1979 models and have been with me since new. Thanks guys for all of the comments/questions/jokes. Have a great day!! Tom Adams
  10. Ruh-roh....thanks t-man, I didn't see it on their website. My bad. Tom Adams This message has been edited by Tom Adams on 09-15-2001 at 11:47 AM
  11. ....uh, honey, it's my new center channel speaker. This is what happens when you're bored and curious. Tom Adams ps: Find the sock.
  12. DD2 - I like your crash test dummies idea. Maybe the dummies could be dressed up in a horn looking outfit?? TV - Thanks for the info. So, would this info be something you guys might consider adding to your FAQ section of your website. You know, dispell the myth so-to-speak?? I guess that's what I was hoping to accomplish with this thread. Tom Adams
  13. <I should know better, but here goes > First of all, although I've not listen to a multitude of the best stuff out there, I have had my ears tickled by some nice speakers/equipment over the last 20 some odd years. And I must confess that I'm kinda in the can't hear a difference camp. Nonetheless.... It's been my observation over these 20+ years of reading & listening to this speaker wire debate (which, BTW, is second only to the great motorcycle oil debate ) that those who say they can hear the difference, don't ever claim to have done a double blind test. OTOH, those that claim there is no difference, base it on having been in a DBT. So what does that say? I dunno.... Personally, I want to believe there is a difference. But my participation in a DBT tells me that there is none. Ahhhh...the great juxtaposition. And not to stick up for Stereo Review, but personally, I'm thankful for them having helped me out. When I was a teen some 30+ years ago, there was no internet to go to for answers to neophyte dumass questions. Serious audio folks were all old farts about 35 or so (that's a joke) and didn't seem too friendly to a pimply-faced paperboy looking for "the truth". True audio stores were imposing and a paperboy's hard-earned money paled in comparison to the $1K price tag on that blue glow MacIntosh. So mags were my source and Stereo Review was the only one written for us dummies. It arrived at my house and didn't look down it's nose at me, nor did it's words try to make me feel inferior. If I wanted that, all I had to do was go to the audio store and ask my dumass questions to some 40 year old "audiophile". So, maybe they have become mainstream - or maybe my knowledge has progressed past their readers' level. Who knows. But I certainly can't bash them for maybe, just maybe, there's some 16 year old, pimply-faced paperboy out there looking for some answers and Stereo Review helps introduce him to our hobby. BTW, you know, I'm not certain, but I think I met TheEar(s) once in an audio store. Tom Adams
  14. For a moment, I thought I recognized the speaker. Then I realized there was no sock in the photo. Tom Adams
  15. Hey Mike - remember me?? Your place looks like I remember it. Oooops - wait a minute, you got another pair of Klipschs. Sa-WEET. Another amp? And an Acurus at that?? I'm jealous. Seriously though. Looks nice. The RS3's kinda look outta place. How do they sound with the new (old) stuff? BTW, my Cornwalls seem to get better every day. Still am greatful you let me (us) use your place to listen to them. Remember, if you're ever in Savannah, give a call. Tom Adams
  16. To the folks at SVS (assuming you're listening)... Klipschguy's recent post as well as one or two others, has gotten me to thinking that maybe you guys should address the "tippy" concern folks have with your subs. Not sure what the criteria would be, but if you could show that a stumbling, falling 2-year old can whap into it and it not topple, it might help ally some fears. Anyhow....it's just a thought. Tom Adams
  17. Hey Klipschguy - I've got a KSW15 running with my Cornwalls and it's ok. I mean, it performs well, but I find myself constantly re-adjusting it depending upon whether I'm playing music or watching movies. For HT explosions & stuff it does a fine job, but seems kinda mushy when playing music. But it will do until I'm able to sneek an SVS in under the cloak of darkness. Tom Adams
  18. Hey Ed! Looks like you're well on your way for a very simple & clean HT. Your K-Horns have me curious...is that some kinda add-on trim/moulding on them?? I noticed your sig says "slightly modified", care to elaborate? And finally, how deep or far away from the screen do you sit? Thanks for the photos!! Tom Adams
  19. Hey fini - you guys can swing by and pick me up, I'm game! Can I bring my socks too? Tom Adams
  20. Hey boa - Ask and you shall receive.... http://www.ati-amp.com/specsatp8500.html It doesn't have DPLII, but the fact that it has plug & play boards does make it kinda obsolete proof. It's kinda pricey, but what the hell. If your hobby was fishin', you'd spend a lot more on boat, motor, and fishin' stuff. Tom Adams
  21. Ross - That round orange thing in the corner to the right of the screen....is that a Gott servo-ultra reference standard sub? BRAHAHAHAHA........... Tom Adams
  22. Sweet system KAiN. I spent 2 hours listening to a pair of RF-7's last Saturday. They were being driven by a Denon 5800 in stereo only. I listened to several CD's from Steely Dan to Liquid Soul to Diana Krall to The Screamin' Cheeta Willies to Grover Washington. Man-oh-man....I could see me living with those speakers. Only one problem - my 1971 Cornwalls sound just as good. Seriously though, I really did like the sound of those guys. I think you made a wise choice. To my ears, if money were an issue, I'd get RF-3's. If money wasn't an issue it would be the RF-7 over the RF-5. It should be interesting to see how the RF-5 sell. BTW, did you ever try to pick up a RC-&7? Man, that thing is like ridiculously heavy. Hey Klipsch - what did you put in that thing, depleted uranium?? Anyhow, hope you have a hand truck KAiN to move those things around. Tom Adams
  23. Jason577 - Frzninvt & Olaf hit the nail on the head. I too have a Toshiba 3109 and it is crap playing an audio CD - and there's many times it won't even play an audio CD. Go to _____ audio store and buy a true CD player. Your KLF's will love you for it. Tom Adams
  24. Hey eq - In case you decide to make the mod, here's the Radio Shack part number: 274-630. No disrespect to Allan Songer, but I hear no sonic differences after making this mod to my Heresy's. I did the same thing you're contemplating for convenience as well. Having a way to use banana plugs makes the switch out from my RC-3 to a single Heresy much easier and allows me to make comparison listening without a lot of hassle. I can change out the speakers in 15 seconds (almost as good as a NASCAR pit stop ). Tom Adams
  25. eq - I just did this mod to my Heresy's. Radio Shack has a banana plug/binding post speaker jack thingy they sell. I don't have the part number handy, but can get it tonight. Anyhow, the installation was simple enough once the cutout for the terminal was layed out. I too wondered about how this mod would affect the "originality" of the speaker, but since I don't plan on ever selling these things, it wasn't an issue. I also replaced those panhead screws that attach the back of the speaker with some nice proper brass wood screws (had to countersink the holes for the new screws). Tom Adams
