Dear Mom, It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Dad and you. I have been finding real passion with Stacy and she is so nice. But I knew you would not approve of her because of all her piercing, tattoos, tight motorcycle clothes and the fact that she is much older than I am. But it's not only the passion... Mom she's pregnant. Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people that live nearby for cocaine and ecstasy. In the meantime we will pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Stacy can get better. She deserves it... Don't worry Mom. I'm 16 and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I'm sure that we will be back to visit so that you can get to know your grandchildren. Love, Your Son Jon P.S. Mom, none of the above is true. I'm over at Tommy's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the report card that's in my center desk drawer. I love you. Call me when it's safe to come home.
  2. If it's on the same recording in the same places I'd look at the recording first. Harry
  3. I'd go with a 4 ohm and a bit more effecientHarry
  4. Great job John, I'm doing a restoration of an older pair and I'm gonna do some of the mods on the sound chamber. Thanks for the detailed pics. Checked out the websight and keep up the good work. Harry
  5. Get hold of the "Arkansas Guy" BEC here on the forum. He can take care of all your needs. The old AA crossovers should probably be rebuilt or replaced. If you're handy with a soldering iron you can replace the caps yourself. If not, BEC can do and save some serious bucks or replace with all new, pretty, and fresh AAs. BEC (Bob Crites) can also take care of any diaphrams on the K-55s and K-77s you might need. I really like his replacement tweeters instead of the K-77s. Bob is "top notch" in his parts, service, and help. Without playing favorites there are others here on the forum that modify and build some very nice crossovers. For stock or original type parts replacement or repair I'd stick with Bob "BEC" Crites. The logo can be had directly from Klipsch parts (Klipsch can supply some of the replacement parts you need. Great people at Klipsch) New from Klipsch are only a couple of bucks. As far as the cabinet repair goes, I'd use a good auto body repair polyester filler on the major gouges, chips, and missing wood. Reinforced fibreglass on the lower edges of the cabinets that are prone to damage from moving is a good idea. Once you have your cabinets very straight and smooth you can use about any veneer you wish on them. Your personal preference is always good. There's some great posts here about veneer replacement and refinishing. All the info you need for repair, refinishing, and restoration is here. Congrats on the LS and Heresy purchase and welcome to the addiction. Harry
  6. Tone controls have their place as do many components in the system. When I first went "Toneless" I hated the lack of versatility. It was frustrating doing all the switching of tubes, cables, room treatments, crossover mods, etc. After finding the proper tubes for my preamp I found I no longer needed controls. It was just a matter of luck in my case in finding the "magic wand" for my pre. It was just a matter of complimenting all my gear with the right tubes. It all came together with the right tubes for my system. I no longer need tone controls on my #1 system no matter what I choose to play. I've found what I like. And no, I'm not telling this time at least until some company starts producing a good tube again. I find it's not as much as the source material as it is the type of music I play. But then I feel a person needs a minimum of three systems for covering most types of music. Rock, classical, blues, Jazz, etc, all have their own preferences for speakers for maximum reproduction. My Homebrew Cornwalls suit most of my needs but I find my Khorns do a better job on some music. I've also got a pair of "rat" Klipsch with 511s and an old vintage pair of Altec 604b duplex that have their place for certain types of music also. I don't have tone controls on any of these except the old 604b models and it's built into the dividing networks I chose to use. I haven't touched them since the initial set-up tweeking. I am going to bi-amp them soon so the control will be eleminated completely. Tone controls are a quick and easy fix for neutralizing recordings but I think I've found the right combos to eleminate them. At least for my preferences anyway. JMHO with what I listen to anyway. Hey, if it sounds good, use it. There are no wrong components if you get where you want to go. Harry
  7. AGREED!!!I've even seen the wrong caps in crossovers from the factory.(twice) Pull the bin covers and verify polarity on the woofer. Harry
  8. If you like the sound of it buy it. Listen close for "noise" from the table. The cartridge is where you'll notice most of the difference. Cheap says it all. You get what you pay for. It may be a great deal. I've got the DP 15F and it sounds ok. Not a lot of difference in the two of them.
  9. Don't get all hung up on the "numbers".I've seen a lot of variance in the readings of individual meters. I've got a couple of "cheaper" meters that read different values on the same component. "Good test equipment gives good test results" as a general rule. If it sounds good, use it. Harry
  10. I'd start with the caps or crossover change first. I just re-capped my '77 AA crossovers. Two of my 2uf caps were totally dried out. No weight at all to them. The sound as expected was greatly improved. Clarity was restored and it was like a new pair of speakers. I used the Jantzen caps just to try them out. I have no problems with them at all. They sound very good. Harry
  11. There's been a lot of sacrifice to make this the country it is. I salute all who have served, are serving, and will serve our country to keep it free and safe. Too many have given all. The cost is high, the rewards taken for granted. You are not forgotten. Today is just a day set aside to make sure more people don't forget. Too bad every day isn't a day of remembering our faithful. They've earned it and deserve more than just one day a year. Harry
  12. This is probably a situation where you could use a bit of help. Where are you located? Some knowledgeable and curious forum member may want to lend a helping hand. Harry
  13. Cornwalls can't be beat in your room. My personal favorite from Klipsch. However, I've been tweaking on a pair of old Khorns for a couple of months for a small room with no corners and I've found you can sure make them sound sweet. I bought these old K's with just this intention for smaller room use. Granted the larger rooms will bring out more but you're not limited as much by room size as you might think. Just a few "minor adjustments" make a world of difference. Harry
  14. They are repairable as in "Re-cone" if necessary. Reasonably inexpensive. I've done a couple myself and sent some to http://www.circuitshop.com/http://www.circuitshop.com/'> in Kentwood Mi. Harry
  15. Working with any company can be frustrating. I don't know how many nice old audio unit's I've got rid of because I couldn't find/get parts for. I'm not taking sides here, but I've been dealing with McIntosh for over 40 years now. It's the ONLY company I know of that still supports their old models in any way shape or form. Most have a "Five Year" policy. Buy anything from Harman Intl and most of the time you're told it's no longer available. You have to settle for used or "restored" for anything hard to find or not common. McIntosh has ALWAYS given me great service at reasonable prices. But....I always deal with NY directly for anything I need for my old Macs. The exception being back in the early '70's when Mac had reps visit the better audio stores and you could get free service while you waited. That's always stuck in my mind and they repaired and re-tubed a couple of my old amps. FREE. I'm just glad there's still some good companies around to take care of their "faithful". Best of luck getting your glass. It may take a while but at least you can still get it. I hope all finally works out for you. Harry
  16. Ok, Knock on wood it's running pretty good now. After a major screw up on my part I had to replace the processor in my PC. I was cleaning out the sawdust in my PC and dropped the fan and processor (building Khorn tophats in the living room) resulting in a bunch of bent pins. The new Athlon 4800 seems to have made a difference. It's now reading the 4.34 gigs of ram instead of just reading 2.0 as before. It's much faster and stable so far. (bad processor maybe?) While I was working on the PC I went ahead and ordered a new video card. I threw in the 3D 8600 gt 512mb card thursday and got rid of the crappy HP on board video. It's running smooth as silk right now with no issues. After reading a few of your experience I figured I'd try something different. Seeing how I'm not that bad on a PC I thought it could be the PC itself. Looks like my problems may have just been the store bought "minimal" components. I HOPE!!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's gonna keep working like this. This is the best this thing has ever run. Thanks guys, Harry
  17. Thanks guys. Great site and all tube guys should have it. Harry
  18. I've got an old integrated running EL86 tubes. Can the EL84 be substituted? I'm not very familiar with the EL86 Thanks Harry
  19. I've also heard the 1,2, and 3 side by side. The HIII is a killer speaker and an improvement in detail and "Smooth". IMHO, the best choice with SS on the Heresy. Now I've just got to hear them on tubes! Harry
  20. I replaced the diaphrams in my '76 CWs a couple of years ago and the difference was night vs. day. Mine still worked but I figured after 30 years they had to be worn out or dried out. I'm glad I "freshened up" mine. Sounds a bunch better. Harry
  21. Good looking scoot Jay. Harry
  22. "Shock therapy" Hellova way to start the day. 117v and caffeine!! Harry
  23. Bob also has a pair of cast frame woofs that have a bit more "OOMPH" to them. On the LS you'll most likely have to notch a little wood to get them in. Easily done. Also you'll have to get some longer screws as the frame is thicker. Only a couple of bucks more and well worth it. Highly recommended by many on the forum including myself. Harry
