  1. Welcome Amy- I think you will have your work cut out for you, but hopefully things will simmer down so it doesn't get the best of you. There is still a great deal of good info on this forum; you just have to pick through the trolls. Thanks for all your (future) help.
  2. Andy- Great post, as usual. With regard to your OCS/direct commission comment, I thought that same thing when he announced he was leaving the NFL, and more so now that he was killed. This shows just how proud he was of this country and what it stands for and that he was doing this because he wanted to, not just to make a "statement." My (officer's) cap is off to him and his family as well as all the other brave men and women fighting the fight "over there" so it doesn't have to be fought "over here."
  3. avman- Good point. I think it will be cheaper to just get a generic STB and antenna to see how this all works out. Easy/Shawn- Thanks for the tips, I'll check out these antennas as well. I met up with the guy who has the Sony STB late last week. Pretty impressive pics on Discovery HD (they were showing some Mars shots!) and regular network shows as well. Unfortunately no HD sports, as he said that is very immpressive. He also recommended just going with an inexpensive STB. Antennas will be interesting, since I am not sure where the best spot in/on the house will be, so I'll just run the cable when I get around to it, and not try to guess where it will be just to get it as a clean install in the basement. Besides, the theater will have darker walls, so the cable might not even show. Thanks again for the help. Will take a trip to the various A/V locations over the next few days to see what pricing is like.
  4. Another forum member restored his labels, so you may be able to get a set from him. Check out the 2-ch forum, as I think that is where he posted the thread. If not, do a search for jorjen as the author. Jordan does meticulous work!
  5. Smilin- Can't add much else to what everyone above has posted, but my thoughts are with you. Spend time with your mom. I was fortunate to be able to do that will all three of my grandparents before they passed and it made things a bit easier.
  6. TB- I wasn't trying to bash the company, I was just interested in what the outcome will be. But yes, if this guy can help with the "Heritage" market, more power to him. That's what makes a capitalist society great. No, I'm not trying to turn this into a political thread.
  7. All- I've been off-line for a few days thanks to basement construction and a sick baby, so this is a pretty cool thread to come across. I, too, have benefitted greatly from Andy's posts here and it was great to meet him at the Indy gathering last year. We got to share pizza and drinks before the Friday night hotel gathering. Great guy! So, I'm happy to add to the Heresy fund. Dean, you should have a Paypal from me. Andy- As others above have said, no need for a payback. This is for all the knowledge you have given to the forum, and will continue to give. On a side note, many companies will offer a relocation package for their new hires, so maybe there is some hope there. With all your experience, maybe there is some sort of "big government contractor" that could benefit with your talents? Best wishes to you. Rob
  8. TheEliteOne brings up a good point. What if they take the Klipsch speakers in trade, pull the drivers, horns, x-overs, etc and then put them in the new cabinets? I'll be interested in what finally happens on this since Trey has the lawyers involved.
  9. Tom- Great experiences. I haven't had the chance to shoot the 454, .480 Ruger, or the new .500 S&W. It would be fun to try, but I think I'll set my ownership limit at the .44. I did get to hear (not shoot, unfortunately) a Barrett 50 BMG a few years ago. Pretty cool stuff. Another I'd love to shoot someday. My wife and I went through a similar process for our CCW permits in CT. Now that we are in Colorado, we want to do the same thing, since CO and CT don't have reciprocity. But good to know that others do, as we are now "out of state" CT CCW holders. On a side note, my latest acquisition was a near-mint Kimber in .45 that was too good of a price not to pick up. Fini- I can respect your differing opinion, but as Dean mentioned, you should really review how Michael Moore "created" this "documentary." Check out http://www.hardylaw.net/Truth_About_Bowling.html I won't get into the "what-if's" but it fascinates me how people have demonized a piece of metal and not the person(s) who pull the trigger. I flew into Denver that week to visit my parents and attend the NRA convention. I was horrified by the events, watching them unfold on TV less than 15 miles from my parents' house. (As a sidenote, I now live less than 8 miles from CHS.) I was disappointed, but understood the NRA's decision to cancel the majority of the events. I was most mad at the two shooters. Not only had they killed so many of their classmates and a teacher, but they gave all the anti-gun folks years of play on the "evils" of guns. The Bill of Rights gives people the right to defend themselves and anti-gun people (I prefer the term "anti-rights") are trying to limit the ability of people to defend themselves. I hope I never have to use lethal force to defend myself, my wife, or my 4 month old daughter, but if it comes down to a bad guy or them, the bad guy will lose. BTW, the 5th anniversary of this event is tomorrow. Sorry to hijack the thread with a pretty hot political topic, but this is something near and dear to me.
  10. All- Thanks for the help and advice. I may have a line on a used Sony HD100 from a local contact, so that might be a good start. Any comments on this unit? Grab an antenna and I'll be good to go.
  11. I'll also be interested in the final review with the mods. At some point I want to upgrade my DVD player in the HT, and have researched the Modwright and Wright Sound mods to the Denon DVD 2900 and 5900. Pretty pricey from Wright, but if it can make a big difference...question is, would I be able to notice it?
  12. Craig- Great offer. I know you will love those Forte IIs. Gullah- I know you will like that 299. Craig does a wonderful job and your K-horns will sing! This kind of stuff is what the forum is all about!!
  13. Thanks Clu! Guess we've got the KV-3 bond going for us.
  14. Go get 'em Gary! If I still lived on the east coast, I'd meet you half way, as I've got family up there in RI.
  15. Max- Even 1700 is a tad high for some of us. Maybe it's a 1000 posts, plus extra credit for the number of Klipsch speakers one owns/have owned? Hopefully I can be part of the Clu circus...you never know when you need a rocket scientist. And in the idea of being honest, I look nothing like my avatar, though I did go to school.
  16. Steve- Ok, STB it is then, as I know my PJ doesn't have a tuner. I checked out antennaweb.org and found I am about 17 miles from the antennas, and I am actually slightly above them, in terms of elevation, and all are UHF. However, here in Denver, a few of the stations are only transmitting low-power, so I don't know if I'll be able to pick them up. Malcom- Good to know about Terk. I'm already spending enough on the remodel/PJ/screen that any savings are good savings. Thanks for the other links to view. I didn't realize Channelmaster did those antennas. I used to work in the communications satellite field and used their C-/Ku-band antennas all the time.
  17. Ok, so construction on the HT starts next week, and I've been doing some research on HDTV. We have 5 HDTV stations here in the Denver area, and looks like I should be able to pick them all up. Is anyone using an OTA antenna? I found a couple by Terk and one at my local Rat Shack. What are you folks using? Since it's been so long since I've watched OTA TV, in any form, will these antennas carry both the audio and video signals in a single coax, or are there separate audio lines? The theater will have a front projector with a scaler, so there won't be a single location for a audio/video coax to terminate at. Any advice here would be great. Thanks. Edit: Do I need to get an HDTV STB, or will an antenna do all I need?
  18. How do you compare the Denon DCM-380 to the 963? I really don't need the video capabilities of this machine, since it will be in a 2-ch system, but upsampling is a neat feature and to get into SACD at a decent price is attractive. I agree with your thought that a changer is sometimes handy. That's why I was looking at the 795. The -380 I "have" is a B-stock unit that, while sounds good, has had some mechanical issues; the display wasn't working properly and after sending back to Denon, now the IR repeater doesn't work. I'm getting my money back on this one, and trying to decide if I want another one, or try something new. Certainly the Philips units have caught my eye.
  19. Email Tom at SVS and describe you system and room arrangment. He is very knowledgable and gets back with answers very fast. The customer support at SVS is outstanding and Tom will not lead you astray. I've even seen him recommend another brand to someone. Personally, I'd go with the 20-39PC+ if you don't mind the "extra four inches." It's already at 20Hz and has plenty of muscle with the 525W amp. And you can use 1-2 port blockers to go waay low. I will try that out myself after my HT construction is complete in June. For music, the SVS does very well at keeping up. They mention that the 25-31 will play louder, but I'm not even at 30% on my 20-39 so I can't imagine I'd be able to tell what, if anything, was missing in terms of SPL. And I think I still have plenty of headroom if I want to tune it lower.
  20. Greg- Very interesting review. Have you had more of a chance to do some serious listening? I like the idea that this unit is a 5-disc changer, which has the added benefit of upsampling and SACD. I am thinking pretty seriously about getting this unit for my 2-ch rig. Is it finished in black or silver? I've been reviewing old posts and Leok and others have recommended the Phillips DVD 963SA. Does anyone have head-to-head comparisons between the two units? It looks like the 963 is a single disc machine. The 975SA can be had for about $150 and the 963 for about $375. Is there any difference between them "under the hood" that justifies 2x the price? Will either unit have issues hooking up to a Scott 299B? I have 2-ch IC's running now, and there was a review on the 963 that recommended using the multi-channel outputs. This is only going to be a 2-ch system, so I don't have the extra speakers. Also, does the 795 have an "audio switch" which turns off the video circuitry like the 963? Thanks all.
  21. Edster- Hopefully you are not leaving the forum on a permanent basis. It would be a loss. Rob
  22. I'll throw my hat into the "sub--yea!" category. When I first purchased my Klipschorns, I had them in the corners, but not with a tight fit, since I was in a home with baseboard radiators. I was also running them on the "B" terminals from my HT rig, which included my SVS sub. I though it was a great match, and the sub picked up where the K-horns left off. Now that I have them in "almost" proper corners, I can really tell the bass that these speakers deliver. I am not running a sub at this time, and while the speakers sound great, I can remember certain times in songs where I know there is really low material, heard with the K-horn/sub combo, or on my HT rig, and it's not there with K-horns alone. That said, while I would like to add a sub to the mix again, I don't know that I have the room. But I'm always looking for a nook/cranny to slip one in.
  23. Win- Welcome back. Your Chorus IIs are singing fine here in Colorado. They'll be quiet for about 6 weeks as I refinish the basement into a HT, and when they come back, they will be joined by a 3rd Chorus II as a center. Hope all is well with you back east. BTW, were you ever able to find those Chorus II cutsheets? Rob
  24. If he loves the Duo's so much, I want to see his ad for selling his Klipschorns! I bet there are a number of folks here that would take those off his hands in a flash.
  25. Welcome to the forum. I have a set of '68 K-horns and love mine. I use the 8 ohm tap on my Scott 299B, so you should be ok with yours. Do a search in the 2-ch forum for the Type A schematic, and you'll find it. I'd post it, but don't have access to it from work. What finish are yours? Mine are KB-WO, walnut oil. As far as rebuilding the Type A's, that all depends. Mine sound really good, but being as old as they are, they are probably out of spec. I am thinking about having one of the other forum members, Bob Crites, screen name-BEC, replace the necessary components. He also sells brand new A, AA, and other Klipsch x-overs, both here and on eBay. His designs closely replicate the original specs that Klipsch used in the older speakers. A great idea for the FAQ. There is a serial number decoding document that you can find, do a search for it in 2-ch again. But I would like to see a list like you mention, at least for Heritage speakers. I posted a request like this a while ago, but didn't get any response. It would certainly help folks who are going out on inspection/buying trips to know what year the speakers are and what components they should have. Maybe we on the forum can build one. Welcome to the forum. Lots of good info here.
