  1. Picked up the CD yesterday and spun in on my CD player and what will become my Dad's Fisher 400, hooked up to the K-horns. Sounded really good. My wife said "That's Steve Tyler, but it sure doesn't sound like Aerosmith." Good album and will listen again tonight.
  2. Frz- Sorry to hear about your 4800 misfortune. I'm looking forward to trying this out on my system, which could be the last movie we see on the 27" screen before construction starts.
  3. Gary- Good to know Dodger is still ok. If you talk with him, ping him on those cut sheets like we discussed earlier. Thanks. Rob
  4. Ki- Sorry for the delay. I'll bump this one up to the top and try to get a pic or two posted in the next couple of days. Rob
  5. Ok, dredging this one up from the depths. Went over to my parent's again this past weekend. Didn't take any more pics, and couldn't see through the grill cloth to actually see the dual driver, but you can certainly tell there is a woofer and a "higher" frequency driver in there. Doesn't have the clarity of more modern speakers, but Dad still likes them, mainly for their sentimental value. We hooked up a CD player so he could have "digital" tunes in the basement as FM radio pretty much sucks around here. Initially we had set the CD player on one of the speakers, had the volume turned up a bit, and the vibrations actually skipped the laser. Kinda cool. CD player now on a more substantial platform. These seem a bit more directional than most speakers, so we played around with the toe-in/out some and got some good results. I think he will live with these for a while, but seemed open to the possibility about retrofitting them with some other, better, components. There isn't any critical music listening going on in the basement, just a basement work bench and other "basement" things. I'd be interested in recommendations from the forum, or should we just leave them stock?
  6. eq/Chuck- Yes, good points on the "cons" of CRT. I'm giving it a go though, so will be interested when everything comes together in about 2 months. And as far as the "Original" Star Wars trilogy, well, that's debateable, since it is actually the Special Edition, not the original theatrical version. But I think I'll probably pick it up.
  7. Q- Great stuff. Congrats on a job well-done. I'll be happy with my front trio of Chorus IIs in about a month, so your system must be incredible!
  8. Chuck- Sniff out a good condition used CRT projector and you won't have to deal with the rainbows, and be well ahead in your bank account because of it. That's the route I'm going as I don't have a ton of cash for a projector (finishing the basement) and a used $2000-2500 CRT machine will certainly outperform a similarly priced digital unit. You'd have to spend a big chunk of money on a new digital unit to get a really good picture, and you may still have the rainbows. My CRT, when new, was well over $10K, so that's a nice price break and I should get about 9000-10,000 hours on the tubes, so when those are done, hopefully digital will have made some good strides and maybe even beat CRT. Hopefully everything will be up and running by early June.
  9. Gary- Happy B-day. I'm an April baby as well. In 3 weeks, I'll be 35. Yikes, last time my car insurance will go down. Other notables born on April 23; Shakespeare (and died on the same day, 52 years later), Lee Majors ($6 million man), and Joyce DeWitt from 3's Company fame.
  10. Dave- Yeah, I figured it was too good to be true. No rush on a pair, as they are for my parents, so if I can find a pair within 6-8hr drive, I'd check those out first. But thanks for the offer to recon any in your area. The 7868 are power tubes, you had mentioned up above that you thought you might have had a pair in your "dumpster" set. I'm looking to get some back-ups for my Dad's Fisher 400 which comes early next week. I don't know if there is a conversion for this tube like some of the others.
  11. Dave- Incredible find! There was a Conn organ up on eBay recently, without tubes, so I know what you were talking about. If you do decide to sell off some of those tubes, and if those are really 7868s, I'd be interested. Thanks. P.S. I never heard from the St. Louis K-horn folks.
  12. Yep, Fortes will do great in HT. What center channel did you get? You could look at KG 1.2/1.5 or KG 2.2/2.5 for your surrounds and do quite well. They are ported, so you would need a bit of space between them and the wall. If you don't have the room, then look at the KG1, which are not ported. Good luck!
  13. Rick- Great price! Very nice score there. I'm hoping that Welborne will bring a set of these to the Rocky Mtn Audio Fest here in Denver in Oct. Maybe I can get a pair off demo! Craig- What tubes do your VRDs use?
  14. Tom/Gary- That's good advice...buy that car then show it to them. I get to look forward to that in about 15 years also. Oh joy. My first car was a '78 Ford LTD. Used to be Dad's, and since he was going to sell it, I told him I'd buy it. $600 and it lasted me through college. Massive 400 cu in V-8 engine that sucked up the gas; maybe 10-11mpg in the city, but I could get 17-18 on the highway back and forth to Kansas. Soooo glad they raised the speed limit on I-70 to 70-75mph the summer before I started school. Kansas at anything slower than 80 is unbearable. In fact, my knickname in college was "Skipper" because I was the only one around driving an Iowa-class battleship!
  15. Royster- You've got a great system there. Pretty good comment on your dad's knowledge about "K-horns being best." I am finding that out about my grandfather who ran tubes, but not with Klipsch. I now power my K-horns with a Scott 299B, but am in the process of getting my dad a Fisher 400 receiver, which is what my grandfather used as my dad was growing up. Should be a good combo with either their Chorus IIs, or the vintage Jensens that I posted about in the 2-ch forum. Originally, I thought your post was going to be an offer to sell, and that got me excited, since my parents are also on the lookout for a pair of K-horns. But I am glad you are keeping them for yourself. Interesting that your '71s are with the Type AA crossover. My '68s are with Type A, so the change must have happened right around there. I would love to get some sort of information as to when the factory made major mods to equipment; crossovers, drivers, horns, etc. It would be helpful in allowing folks to know what stock parts were when going out on buying trips. Again, congrats on a great system.
  16. I'll add a bit to the mix here. I would agree with Q that even in the middle of the room, Klipschorns pump out a surprising amount of bass. I had mine out in the room for a few days as I was applying BLO when I first got them. They sounded better when I got them into corners, but weren't tightly sealed since my house in CT had baseboard heaters. Now that I am in a house with forced-air heat, I have one speaker in a solid corner, tightly sealed with pipe insulation around the tailboard and sides of the HF cabinet that contact the wall. I don't have a second corner to put the other speaker in. For a few days, I ran with half a corner, and I could really tell a difference between the two. As an experiment, I flattened a moving box, specifically a "dish pack" box, which was a few inches taller than the bass bin and extended out about 36" from the wall. Even this minor mod made a big difference in bass output. I was not able to build a false corner in this location, as it would protrude into a hallway that leads to other areas of the house. So, thanks to input from Q, Edster, and artto, I compromised and cut a piece of 3/4" plywood with 40" tall dimension and 36" extension from the wall. I would have preferred to go with 42" which is the standard false corner dimension, but again, I was hampered by the hall. This plywood is then attached to the wall using 3 angle irons with drywall anchors and is pretty snug. Then I pushed the speaker into this "half false" corner, with aforementioned pipe insulation. It sounds good, and while I know this is not optimum, it suits me well and keeps the WAF high, as I painted the plywood (painter's grade) with the same color as the wall. Maybe someday I'll get to build false corners, but for now, I'm happy and have a good 85-90% solution. This is similar to Indy's solution, and I think it works quite well. Rob P.S. Edster's false corners are very nice, as are those rosewood K-horns. My audition with him, Tony Reed, and Mr. Paul pushed me on the way to get the horns, and I will certainly build something similar to Edster's corners if/when I can.
  17. I live about 30 min from the Denver location, but long-term storage could be an issue. I would also be interested in the dimensions of the crate, as I have an Explorer, but also have access to an Expedition.
  18. JM- If you need them, let me know. I got them from Moon after I picked up my K-horns. Figured I needed to see what all the fuss was about. Rob
  19. Griff- Will you be carrying Wright's Mono10 Power amps? Check out the thread about them here in 2-ch, by 3dzapper, titled "I'm Excited!!!" Sounds like a pretty cool system.
  20. While I was growing up, we had a Philco, Made by Ford 19" color TV. It took for forever (at least to a 7yr old) to warm up, so you had to make it a point to sit down well ahead of the time your show was on, or you'd miss the beginning. It was still going strong when my parents bought a new 25" Curtis Mathis TV to replace it.
  21. Rick- This sounds like a sweet pair of amps! Pretty cool that you will be getting some good power out of those 2A3s. I guess I'm in your boat...3.5W sound nice on Klipschorns, but I like the idea of having some extra "oomph" to work with. Can't wait to hear your impressions of these, as well as the Blueberry! I'm a tad envious, but then I'm using my audio funds to work on the dedicated HT this year. So, can I ask what you are getting them for from Carolina Audio? Are they new or used?
  22. That's a pretty nice size! I'd figured from the pics they were "better than average" on the cup size! Must be a rockin' bedroom! JM- Nah, you want the Christy Canyon pics with the Klipschorns!
  23. Frz- Great minds think alike. Or is it "dirty minds think alike?" Or "I think I like dirty minds?" Ham- Yeah, I read that also. Almost makes me go for the BIN price!
  24. The dumbest tweek I did was when I tweeked my brother's nose and he socked me in mine.
