  1. Yep, It's a long and winding road that has been a great pleasure to walk. With decades of playing around with corner horn modifications, I'm going to enjoy my current setup awhile due to not being able to plan my next move. First let me agree with Mr. Al, that 1" drivers do a very good job but, going the extra mile with 2" drivers is also a joy to behold. JBL 2482s w/Trachorns & Radian dia's (in my case) and JBL 2404H tweeters, open up the audio experence like morning light for a photograph. Add your favorite crossover's to the mix (i like my ALK Universals) and it's like single malt for your listening experience... Go for it, you will not be disappointed.
  2. How about EV (800Hz) 8HDs? I used them before going to Dave's horn and they do a good job.
  3. Now, You'll have to replay your entire collection. Ah, the added expense that costs only time. Have fun, p.c
  4. HAN-D-MAG is the one you want and shelf your tapes tail out. Rewinding after play is a BIG negetive. But it's your tape abuse it if you must. p.c
  5. I've got a couple, one's a Precision. This purchased because of the available support (charts) and they were popular and it was cheap (& it does a fine job). The other is a 707 B&K, it also for the same reason and it handles a few tube series the other one misses.
  6. Dead quiet with a Big Power Source. If you have a ground rod (and you do) that has been in posistion for a while, give it an examination. Disconnect it and note the condition it's in. Don't be surprised if there is nothing left of it, go get a new one and shove it in place (and get a new clamp too). Also buy yourself a phase (plug) checker to insure everything is wired right.
  7. Yes they (2482s) do and with the (Radian Diaphrams) sound great. It would be something to hear a pair of Radians treated with Aquaplas (sp). for fine tuning.
  8. WHEW! After plugg'n through all this, I'm sure glad my JBL 2482s are in place. Hard to believe no one has mentioned them in this discussion. p.c
  9. Nice to know my hearing hasn't gone totally to dust. Thank You, p.c
  10. Mr. Al, Concerning the JBL 2404, did you note the black post is + moving the voice coil forward? After your measurements, have you balanced your results with the published results of the various manufactures? If so, would you be willing to contribute your opinion on the test examples? p.c
  11. I'm another that would like to ask "how does it sound" ??? The measurement pathology has its place but I've never seen a dyno make a pass at a drag strip yet and bet no one else has either. IMO the proof is "listening exclusively" with how it sounds [to me]. How a transducer renders audio is a pointless exercise (but it is a nice way to enjoy an afternoon) especially if [i'm] being plyed with [your] Glenfiddich and (good) Cigar.
  12. Allen screws and washers worked for me after frittering away a bunch of time searching for something that simply isn't available any longer.
  13. L-Pad does the trick. I would like to get a proper XO setup but for now the L-Pad and EQ works fine w/2482.
  14. EV Georgian KD2's w/JBL 2482's and 2380A's. JBL components are a pleasure compaired to the EV suggested CD & horn combo. With a little EQ to calm the 2482's down a touch, my test gear (ears) approve of the show and for the money, I don't have any complaints. Pioneer SX1250 doesn't miss much either...
  15. Mr. Bob Crites has the CW1526 which is a direct replacement. I have a pair and love them.
  16. Playing around with sealing the top of the base bin didn't work for me. Things sounded better allowing the entire wall to contribute to the ceiling. Removed the quarter round floor molding to get the bass bin tight to the wall tightened things greatly. I've noted the same result with KD2's.
  17. DizRotus, I agree. If you deal with Mr Crites you will get an idea of what's possible with good design and fresh parts without going with the hiigher priced spread. I'm very pleased with Mr. Crites "A" XOs for my KHorns but one day I will be sweetening things with a example of ALKs efforts.
  18. Interesting read and on track for SR application(s). Not mentioned was most of the results are monitored by someone connected with the group to insure they are at spec and typically changed (athough not always) during a performance. But what does it have to do with a sound reproducing (not producing) system and dealing with less than positive recorded sources? I typically find playing with EQ a positive on alot of the older (and some of the newer stuff too) recorded material. If you are lucky enough to have a good home system, I agree most of the time things sound good right out of the box. I put jelly on my peanut butter sandwiches too... go figure.
  19. Check over at AudioGon in the tube amp sales thead and see what you can find. Baldwin amps show up from time to time. Last rebuilt example was offered for a respectable $400 and looked like what you have. Highly rated too...
  20. With the 3 mile distance and coupled as you mentioned, try NO antenna and see what happens. Do you have any wall warts, clocks, tooth brush charger etc.. in your immediate area? Stations typically monitor their signal full time but you never know...
  21. Using 06' GDP $s and retail as a starting point, the $750 SX1250 would be around $5,400.00 in todays marketplace (no, I wouldn't buy one). There must be some reason the SX1250 has the following it has, for less than a third the cost of the Denon @ $3,200.00 (will they be around in 3 decades) you would have a very nice receiver. I've several Denon examples under roof, good product with no problems and will buy more in the future. BUT, if I was looking for a High Current Stereo Receiver and was on a budget looking for a monster that would drive most anything, a look at a SX1250 would be a positive move. And yes SX1250 value is going up and $700 or so should find you a very clean example given time. Denon value in a few decades...? Only time will tell... pc PS. I have a pair of SX1250s and enjoy them daily.
  22. Per the question and for the investment, consider a Pioneer SX1250. Covers the question without "question". Will a Denon (whatever) have the value of a Pioneer SX1250 in the future (i doubt it)? pc
  23. Cookies... Bah Hum Bug. Mr. Bob Crites' CW1526s, BC125 Tweeters and A' XOs moved into my EV/Georgian KD2s a few months ago. I also replaced the mids with the Atlas driver but changed them to the JBL 2482/2380A combo. Added some EQ for the JBL 2380As (Thanks Maron) and havn't looked back since. The CW1526 in the KD2 bass bin is as as clean as the JBLs they replaced (for a great deal less money) and the fq is lower too. Next.. Andrews horns. p.c
