  1. I feel like more of a man just by watching those, Michael.
  2. I can't decide how to feel about that.... Part of me thinks "Awesome!" and another part thinks "You spent how many years building that?" I do like the itty bitty crank shaft and other teensy tiny little parts. They were good for a giggle.
  3. Thanks for the reply, professor. Yeah, I noticed right away that the true enemy was recording quality.... and to think, millions of kids listen to such awful compression through those tinny lil' ibuds everyday! I may have even unintentionally done Klipsch headphones a disservice by letting one of my lesser-audio-informed friends listen to the C3s on a 128 kbps file. I tried explaining that the reason he didn't like them was because of the recording quality, but he wouldn't hear it. Oh well....
  4. Ideally speaking, a subwoofer should have absolutely no "boom" whatsoever and should blend naturally with the speakers. Having said that, powerful bass is nothing negative. I'm not sure what "college/elsewhere" ratings you are talking about, but if has anything to do with the mainstream in general, you can rest assuredthat any wattage rating or SQ observation will rarely be valid. Just go to your local Big Box electronics retailer and read the wattage ratings for any home theater in a box system."1000 watts max power?" Not in it's wildest fantasties.
  5. Building Jubilees yourself? I'm not at all familiar with such a phenomenon.... But I'm sure someone on the board can lead you in the right direction, or give you some kind of information. Good luck with your project....
  6. Your numerous subs are acceptable.... But just barely. [] *note the jealous sarcasm*
  7. Hmm... So I'd be on my couch and turn my head yell "Ok, I want Melissa!" Then half way through change my mind and say "No no no stop I want Jessica instead!" then when I get bored of the 6 minutes instrumental say "Alright, stop playing... Clapton- I want the White Room!" That could get really expensive, fast....
  8. Thanks for the input, Ricci. The eD A7S-450 is $775 base, add $85 for eQ.2, another $85 for the LT1300 amp. I had a chat discussion with one other their techs, and he said that due to my room size (12 x 13.5 x 7.5) I should have tremendous room gain (makes sense). eD ships for free, too. That would add about $150 to any sub from epik.
  9. The earphone tip itself is extremely small. Custom 3s depend upon ear gels of varying sizes to give a sort of "custom" fit to your ears. I use the large double flange and they disappear in my ears after just a few minutes. All that I feel in my ears is sound. Granted, it takes time to get comfortable with them. They come with gels in a variety of sizes, the smallest of which look like they could fit a little toddler's ears. They have a "flex wire" which bends over the ear and lends to an even more natural fit. As for the "microphonics" or the noise transmitted in your ears from the cable. The cable is cloth covered which reduces that sort of noise. With the music off it is obvious, but when you turn on the tunes, any other noise effectively disappears. Oh, And the sound. It is unlike anything I have ever heard in an earphone. There though, MP3 file quality makes a HUGE difference. I say go for them. Best earphones I've ever owned.
  10. So I'll take this time to pose a sort of open-ended question. It's fair to say that I have little experience with high-quality subwoofers. The "best" I experience on a daily basis (working at Best Buy) would be something along the lines of a Rockford Fosgate P3 or Alpine Type R 12" (which, on their website, lists a freqency response of 25hz to 500khz hehe). Those drivers are extremely boomy and cannot even begin to delve into any material below 24hz, and any (other) fool who works there will tell you that they are the "best of the best" for subs. For a while, I myself percieved that all subwoofers performed this way and that even the best units would behave likewise. I had my eyes opened when I attended the 08' pilgrimage in Indy, where I heard a demo of the Palladium P-312W on the song "Ain't Yo Bidness" by the Insane Clown Posse. Throughout the song, there is a low sweep of bass, one tone at what I assume is around 24 hz and one that is lower (18hz?). The P-312W shook the room authoritatively on the first wave and then, the part that really made an impression on me, made the air in the room (and also my pant legs) quiver with a subsonic rumble on the lower tone. This was probably one of the most impressive single experience that I took away from those demos. I'm not saying that that particular song is anything great (kind of annoying, really) or that it is great quality, but the bass characteristics I heard (and felt) changed my thinking on subs. I said all that to ask this: What (really) separates a good quality subwoofer driver from a mediocre one? I see models and brands listed every day but that doesn't cut it for me. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I hear claim after claim everywhere that such-and-such driver is superior and on and on. I'm seeking the keys to such claims and how to distinguish real performance from [bs]. I leave the question at that, but on a more specific note, where would the eD A7S-450 fall in a determination of performance? I ask that because it is my #1 candidate for my own sub. Is it really capable of pant-quivering, 14hz-18hz bass like the Palladium sub? Help me out here!
  11. As with any new audio equipment, it may take you ears some time to really adjust to what you are hearing. With other (cheaper) headphones, they produce exaggerated bass, which to some people sounds impressive. The Custom-3s balance out the entire range and can therefore seem "thin" in the bass compared to other 'phones. I encourage you to take some time and really listen to some recordings with which you are familiar. Also, I would set the EQ on your player to flat. Most people have it set to either a "rock" setting or a bass enhanced setting, both of which can sound good but I feel are artificial in the improvements that they make. As the others mentioned, quality of the file is extremely important as well. For instance, I am currently listening to "Over the Hills and Far Away" by Led Zeppelin on my Custom-3s, which was ripped from the new Mothership album as an Apple Lossless file. That means the bitrate is somewhere in the neighboorhood of 950kbps. Compared to the copy I have from their "Houses of the Holy" album, which is at 128kbps, you can hear the distinct difference in quality. The improvements of a higher bitrate are excellent when used with earphones that are able to portray the differences.
  12. My budget is (ideally) $900 or less. It's looking more and more like a futon is not going to work for a big guy like me. The Klaussner Queen size sleeper sofa that FBD linked looks like a real candidate... plus, it wouldn't look like I live in a frat house. Anyone know a dealer who can get me an excellent deal? [6] My name was taken from this little anecdote, which I pass along to anyone who comes to me seeking audio advice: Buy Other Stereo (Sound) Equipment or else you'll have a Bad Or Sad Experience
  13. Regular retail on an RF-82 is $499, so you got a bit of a discount. Were these the display models? If so, you probably overpaid by a bit. Nonetheless, they are awesome speakers and sound great at any price!
  14. By "klik klak" I assume you mean any other sleeper sofa. Do you own one of these? I have a sealy mattress now and it's pretty nice to sleep on. The price isn't bad, especially if I can get it in leather; and they look really nice, to boot. Thanks for the info...
  15. This thread is getting stale... Can anyone post pics of some of their new subwoofers? It seems like everyone has upgraded recently... and don't we have a couple new Palladium owners out there now, too?
  16. That would be a yes, as I have no closet to store it in. lol I'm starting to like the futon idea more and more, as I am a big person (5'11", 260lbs) and a wide bed would work well.
  17. In the process of building my home theater, I realize that my dedicated room [aside from being small (12.5 x 13)] has a problem. It is also my bedroom. Isn't the living-at-home college life just great? Heh. So the twin bed must go and be replaced by something that can double as both a sofa and a place to get a good night's (read: restful) sleep. Thus far, I have considered a futon, such as: http://www.kingsfurnishings.com/Ore-International-R8114BLK--Leather-Futon-Sofa-Bed--Black_p_1487-9841.html Or some sort of sleeper-sofa or chair such as: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Softee-Sleeper-Chair/3288821/product.html?cid=130555&fp=F&srccode=cii_9686437&cpncode=17-18246146-2 The biggest concern is that it will be comfortable (obviously) I have also considered other options, like a hammock, but vetoed it for reasons of ingress and egress. I'm really just looking for opinions but if you have other ideas, please mention them. Thanks a bunch.
  18. "Where my BPT BP-3.5 Signature Plus is a noise killer and excels at image density, mass and damping, the Velocitor is a pacesetter. It excels at speed, dynamics, jump factor and release. I can't necessarily tell you that one makes the system quieter than the other." "Because of its innate reflexes, you might suspect the Velocitor to be slightly edgy in terms of transient definition. It's not. Transients are explosive and well-defined but not chiseled or exaggerated. They simply seem more precise than the BPT's because they let go so rapidly. I wager a guess that the fine balance on tap here is partially a function of running cryogenically treated silver and copper conductors in parallel (and in a predetermined ratio to combine specific attributes). Be that as it may, the velocity function of this unit doesn't come at the expense of zippiness, stridency, hype or forced excitement. In that sense, it's not an emphasizer but a liberator." I wish I could pretend to hear a difference in any one of the things I bolded.
  19. http://www.klipsch.com/headphones/ The link to register your headphones is at the very bottom of the page, smack-dab in the middle. Just got my gels in the mail on Saturday. Enjoy
  20. Picky, does that window right next to the TV cause any glare issues for you?
  21. I couldn't agree more. Anyone who says that Samsung or Panasonic (while both good brands) can hold a candle to the Pioneer plasma line performace-wise should get their eyes tested. The Elite line just takes it up another level in realism. Is this going to be replacing the 45" Sharp LCD? The SC-09TXH is also certainly "drool worthy" in my book... is that going to be used on the RF-7 system or something else? It's hard to keep track of all your speakers!
